View Full Version : El Paso County Sheriff
Bill Elder vs Michael Angley. I just started getting stuff in the mail from Angley. Hadn't really been paying attention and I'm not sure how true the allegations about Bill Elder are. Angley claims to be a true conservative, but talk is cheap. All I can find on this guy is that he is a writer. What are your thoughts on who to vote for, and why?

Angley will need to brush up on immigration law if he wants to be sheriff. His written opinion shows his ignorance.
I know Bill Elder and would vote for him again in a heartbeat.

Elder's beef with the past sheriff and everything that goes along with "the Elder file" is all I need to know that Elder is crooked.

Care to elaborate?
Did you bother to read his position piece from the link posted?

Maketa had a major melt down his third term and did some shady shit. Hard to blame Elder for that.

Yes, I did. But I didn't make the claim it's out of compliance with immigration law (for I do not know immigration law in any capacity to make a statement for or against the claim), whereas you did. I'd like you to elaborate on that claim.

"I believe in legal immigration. Illegal immigration is a concern because of its impact in two areas: economic security and public safety. When people come to the United States illegally, they are unvetted. We simply have no idea who may be here for criminal, terror, or other nefarious reason. When I’m Sheriff, El Paso County will not be a Sanctuary County.
The current El Paso County Sheriff Office (EPSO) policy with respect to illegal immigration seems to straddle the fence. It rightly prohibits profiling based on race and other factors. But it minimizes the time an individual can be held who is found to have violated federal immigration laws.
In short, it’s a ‘Catch – Hold Briefly – Release’ policy. Individuals can only be held if there is an arrest warrant for a criminal violation. If the person’s only violation is a ‘civil’ infraction of immigration law, then he is to be released.
I don’t think this solves the problem. Consistent with, and in compliance with, state and federal law, I intend to maximize discretion and detain for as long as is permissible and work in conjunction with federal immigration authorities on disposition.
I will be compassionate. I will be fair. But I WILL enforce the law."
The local sheriff does not have authority to hold people on immigration violations. That remains the responsibility of the feds. When local authorities contact a admitted or suspected illegal alien, we cannot hold them for that violation. We can contact ICE and they will decide if they are willing to take custody of them (mostly does not happen). As such, we as local authorities can only hold this person for the time authorized in whatever state level case they are involved in. He wants to say Elder isn't doing enough and he would do more, but there isn't any more to do. If ICE doesn't put a detainer on the person, they are required to be released from custody. What 'sanctuary cities' are trying to do is refuse the detainers and insist on a court order for the holding of the subject. El Paso was just successfully sued for honoring the ICE detainers and the judge allowed the case to go class action suit. So, exactly what does Angley think he will do differently? Especially since his position seems to indicate that Elder isn't doing enough.
I see. Thank you for clarifying.

This is my problem. The prosecution of former Sheriff Maketa was as clearly politically driven bullshit as the whole "Trump colluded with Russia to rig the election" nonsense. I suspect if we ever found out the truth we'd find Bill Elder's finger prints all over it. Until proven otherwise, I'm voting for Angley in the primary ... and then I'll hold my nose and vote for Elder in the general because his skeevy ass will be better than any creature the Dems could possibly dig up and put on the ballot.

Driven by whom?
My theory is that Elder colluded with Democrats (which is worse than Russians) to destroy Maketa because he's an actual conservative.
If I had to theorize over who the Dems were I'd say Richard "Rat Boy" Skorman and Tim Gill (the same Tim Gill that colluded with Jared Polis and Tom Steyer to turn Colorado dark blue (https://www.amazon.com/Blueprint-Democrats-Colorado-Republicans-Everywhere/dp/1936218003/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1527886468&sr=8-6&keywords=the+blueprint)). Turning El Paso and Weld counties blue will forever break the back of the "R"s and turn CO into East CA permanently.

Not disagreeing but Elder has a lot of skeletons in his closet. First open source I ran across:

And www.dirtyelder.com is entertaining to say the least.

Okay, I'll bite. How did the file go missing? The one that Elder swears he didn't have in Internal Affairs? What would the reasoning be to collude against Maketa? He couldn't run again for Sheriff due to term limits.

You realize this is dealing with Maketa and the mention of the Elder file was during the time Maketa was the Sheriff? Elder didn't work for the Sheriff's office at that time.

He was a popular conservative, he could easily have run for another office and won. Also there's a bit of warning to anyone else out there on the right to keep their head down.
Nope, I can't prove a damn thing about any of this, so feel free to dismiss it all as conjecture ... all I know is when I start saying things in defense of Maketa and critical of Elder, most of the people I know that work in local law enforcement (including SO personnel) nod in agreement.

Maketa screwed Maketa with all his sleeping around and the general hostile and chaotic environment he and his Undersheriff created in his third term as Sheriff. He was well liked until all the dirt starting coming out.
I can't speak to who you talk with. I can speak to the people I speak with within law enforcement. There were Maketa supporters who didn't like Elder and there were Elder supporters who didn't like Maketa. With over 700 employees, there is no way either one will get everyone to like them.

In court, Elder maintained he wasn't aware of the file. There was a protocol for IA to let people know they were under investigation and he stated he wasn't ever notified. I'm not sure what skeletons you mention or if that comment was solely directed at the fact he had a IA file. Hundreds of people at the SO have a IA file. Doesn't mean they did bad things. You can get one for having an accident in a SO vehicle or if you get a citizen complaint for not being nice enough to them.
All I know about the current sheriff is that permit renewals come with a hand-signed letter, and he didn't screw up on TV for Deputy Flick's funeral.
What exactly are the reasons to vote for the other guy?

Saw something about this recently from Jeffco sheriff as well.
ICE holds are signed by an immigration official rather than a judge and without a judicially authorized warrant, holding an inmate beyond his or her release date violates the Fourth Amendment’s protection against unlawful seizure. Through its ICE hold requests, the same governing body that created our Constitution is asking me and all local sheriffs to violate the nation’s founding principles as well as the oath we took when sworn into office.
In recent years, many jurisdictions across the country have been successfully sued for detaining an individual at the behest of ICE. In 2009, the JCSO held an inmate beyond his release date at the request of ICE and we were subsequently successfully sued by the ACLU on behalf of that inmate. Repeatedly, the courts have ruled that local sheriffs have no authority to hold arrestees without a judicially approved warrant.

Wow! That's a lot of conjecture.
You admit you have no basis for these claims ... but you go ahead and post them. Curious.
What makes a rat who sleeps around "conservative"? I am not aware that such flagrant promiscuity is a conservative ideal.
If I had to theorize over who the Dems were I'd say Richard "Rat Boy" Skorman and Tim Gill <snip>. Turning El Paso and Weld counties blue will forever break the back of the "R"s and turn CO into East CA permanently.
As I left the GOP six years ago, I really don't care about the (extremely corrupt, IMO) COGOP. I don't see CO becoming another CA as California is self-destructing.
