Interesting article (careful...it's very anti-gun) in "America - The National Catholic Weekly":
http://www.americamagazine.org/content/article.cfm?article_id=11978
This excerpt of a few quotes by Kristen Rand of the Violence Policy Center really irritated me (emphasis is mine in bold):
Kristen Rand, legislative director at the nonprofit Violence Policy Center in Washington, D.C., pointed out to America that such weapons all come from jurisdictions without strong laws like Chicago’s. “You can’t buy a handgun in Chicago or the District of Columbia legally, so traffickers go to states with weaker laws and then bring them to the cities that don’t allow their purchase.” For Ms. Rand and other gun control advocates, one of the worst aspects of a victory by those who mounted McDonald v. Chicago would be that it would remove what she called “the most effective measures to prevent handgun violence.” She observed that the Supreme Court in both Heller and now in McDonald is examining the issue solely as a question of constitutional law “and not in terms of the deadly effect on citizens of gun violence.” The court should know better than most that, as former U.S. Justice Robert H. Jackson said, “the Constitution is not a suicide pact.”
Imagine the nerve of any Supreme Court justice who would examine an issue before the court in terms of constitutional law and not wild rhetoric and emotion!
That's right, Ms Rand. It's not a "suicide pact". That's why the 2nd Amendment is there. So We The People can defend ourselves...not only from bad guys but from morons like you that would leave us defenseless against predators.
"Most effective measures to prevent handgun violence"...WTF ever! When does it become obvious to these mental midgets that criminals don't obey the law.
Yeah Chicago's crime rate is doing fan-fucking-tastic thanks to the great gun laws they have there, I think California is doing a bit better For themselves with theirs /sarcasm.
When are these morons gonna open their eyes?
I'll defend my family with my Glock, Ms. Rand can use her pen... We'll see who walks away from their confrontations...

I hate this kind of shit. Ms. Rand is another one of the useless, liberal hand wringers who fail to understand handguns are not responsible for shooting deaths. Criminals are.
If we were to apply her logic to other areas we would find the following:
General Motors/Ford/Chrysler and their unrestricted sales of powerful, fast performance vehicles are responsible for street racing deaths. Honestly, why does anyone need a Camaro, Mustang, or Charger. These vehicles serve no "sporting" purpose and should be, at a minumum, tightly regulated or restricted to law enforcement only...
Concerned citizens group demands immediate ban of all matches, lighters and gasoline cans as these tools of destruction make it all too easy for arsonists to perpetuate their crimes. These things have no place on our streets. Diamond Match, Bic, and Eagle storage containers have innocent blood on thier hands and they and the sellers of these items are responsible for many, many, deaths in this country
These are just two equally ridiculous examples that spring to mind. I'm sure I could think of more. The one thing all "banners" fail to realize is making something illegal never makes it unavailable. No law ever causes people to act responsibly. No city anywhere in the world has ever been made safer by restrictions on the private ownership of firearms. Just ask the English, the Australians, Chicagoans, or New Yorkers.
One last point, I 've never been anyplace where I felt I needed to carry a gun more than I did when I visited Chicago.
I have a close eye on mine and I have repeatedly told them if they sneak out and get into any trouble they Will be disassembled...

I have a few that I trust and will leave unsupervised outside of the safe. The rest can't be trusted on their own...they stay locked up. It's for the children.
One of our friends won't let us watch her kid because we have "guns in the house."
Meh.

Ms. Rand's arguements use the same type of logic as the anti-hunters who tell us to get our meat at the store where "it's made".
These types of people will NEVER get it and can't understand that criminals are really and truly the bad guys that we need protection from, not law abiding citizens who simply want to protect themselves.

Sounds just liberal enough that I'm betting her kid gets no discipline @ home and is a total hellion -- sounds like you're better off not having that child in your home.
Not to worry 2012 is a coming,,, LOL

Absolutely the opposite, and it is rude of you to assume so.

Perhaps, but I'm okay with that. [Tooth]
Sometimes on a gun board it is easy to forget that not every aspect of life is directly tied into gun ownership and knowledge of firearms. Making sure your kids are safe and not allowed in an environment that you don't trust, is rule #1 in parenting.

Thats odd, My friends are encouraged for us to have their kids since owning guns. I send them home knowing operation, cleanliness, functionality, and safety and fullfill un parented curiosity.

Our kids are all only 2.
Well, they probably haven't developed the fine motor skills necessary to detail-strip a 1911 yet. But field-stripping a Glock should be 2nd nature by now.

I don't have any Glocks. I can't have my sock drawers randomly exploding all the time. I have a family to take care of.

Ohhhhh, man.[Rant1][Rant2]
Sorry, Im a Glock fan.
I just winked in real life instead of typing it.
No wonder people not in the know are afraid of guns, when even gun owners say stuff like, "I don't want that gun, it is a ticking time bomb." They can't tell that we are joking.

Hmmmm, had the G20 for about 9 years now,, Hasn't blown up once as far as I recollect... Still hits clays at 100 yrds also..
Imagine that...
I hope you didn't have that in the house when I bought that gun from you. You could have killed us both! ;)
Yep, right in the desk...

Oh my God. I was so close to death and didn't even know it. From now on, instead of driving up Federal when I go home, I'm going to take a detour around your place. I'll also never shop at that Safeway again. It's a Glock AND a .40? Sweet baby Jesus. Think about all the times I ran right by your place! Oh dear oh dear oh dear.
.40??????????
10mm, son...
If it goes,, it throws the world off it's axis...
Get real...
Right, I knew it was 10mm. I was planning on making some joke about how if .40s are dangerous, 10mm must be deadly. I forgot. Anyway, I'm about out of jokes for this. Thanks for playing along. :)

Sorry. I was confused when you said:
One of our friends won't let us watch her kid because we have "guns in the house."
Meh.
My friends know about how I stored my firearms (before they were lost in the tragic boating accident), they know about my attitude and actions pertaining to firearms safety, and they trusted the environment.
I mistakenly made the assumption that your situation was similar. If your response was for humor, sorry, I missed it completely.
Some people you just can't explain things to, but that doesn't ruin them for every other aspect of life. We never get together for anything gun related, so they never come up. Whenever they come over, she asks if my guns are put up, I always tell her, "Duh."
Sweet baby Jesus.

Sturtle - Does she really expect that you'd leave loaded firearms laying around with young children of your own in the home?
You're right - there are just some folks that you can't get to see reality standing right in front of them; it sounds like this woman is one of those folks. I've known plenty of folks like that through the years and feel a certain degree of hopelessness for each of them.

Well, true sometimes one can't convince someone else of the obvious, but other times one can...
Take my wife for example. When I met her she was a good, gun hating Democrat. Since she professed to have an open mind, I called her out. I asked her to at least try shooting and if she didn't like it, I wouldn't bug her about it again. Well, I took her to the range and after the requisite safety lessons, I put an old Ruger Single-Six in her hands. She did OK with it and after about three cylanders of .22 LR she says,"I'd like to try that black gun." I said, You mean my .45? She says, "Yeah, it looks kind of dangerous"..
Well, wanting to encourage her I explain it's operation and tell her "have at it!" First mag was all over the place. Second mag was a little better, and by the third mag she was stitching with my Sig. She exclaimed, after shooting all 200 rounds of hardball I brought, "Holy Shit, that was FUN!!!" She has been one of us ever since...
Sometimes, we win a convert over to our side...
Sometime later we went to see my dad at the Shootin Den about a pistol for her. She told my father that she found it empowering as a woman to know how to use a firearm and that shooting was more fun than she could have imagined. I swear I saw a tear in his eye.[LOL] Anyway, later that night he brought over about 1200 rounds of .40 Smith from his personal stash for her to shoot. See, one has to give guidance and support to a fledgling convert...
She's from Ohio. I'm sure that is most of the reason.
