Well in 1968, there were 14,000 armed soldiers and machine guns mounted on the Capitol steps. But they only had hours to deploy, not a week to prepare. It sure was a disaster area.

A Washington D.C. police officer who was swarmed and beaten by pro-Trump rioters at the U.S. Capitol last week reflected on his harrowing experience.
"If it wasn't my job I would have done that for free. It was absolutely my pleasure to crush a white nationalist insurrection," Daniel Hodges told NBC News on Thursday. "I'm glad I was in a position to be able to help. We'll do it as many times as it takes."

Anyone else think this is out of line for an officer sworn to uphold the constitution, server and protect and all that jazz to say this publicly?
He's certainly entitled to his political opinion, but what proof of "white nationalism" does he have as a front line peace officer?
Can you only imagine if any one of the many LEO protecting assets and personnel from the BLM or Antifa said the same?

Don't cherry pick half of what was in the very very short article.
Daniel Hodges told NBC News on Thursday. Hodges was captured in a video being crushed in a doorway by a violent mob. He said they then stole his equipment and beat him. "They ripped my mask off. Stole my equipment. Beat me up. Sprayed me with everything," he said.
D.C. Police Officer Michael Fanone told CNN Friday that a group of rioters beat him to the ground, stripped him of his gear, and threatened his life. "Some guys started getting a hold of my gun and they were screaming out, 'Kill him with his own gun,'" Fanone said.
Let's try to walk a mile in these gentlemen's shoes first. I cannot imagine what it was like for those officers that day.

I'm sure it was absolutely awful. The guy got hurt and that truly sucks. People can die in mobs like that and there is no doubt that crossed his mind while it was happening. I'm sorry that happened to him and the others. I'm sure it was very traumatic for some of them. I don't wish that on anyone.
But to pretend to be some hard ass that "crushed an insurrection" and race bait to the media, that makes him a douchebag regardless of what it was like in his shoes. Let's not confuse what happened to him with his bullshit, race baiting hard guy nonsense after the fact. Getting assualted by a mob doesn't make his comments after the fact off limits to criticism.

Quick question. The reporters that followed the mob into the capitol to report on the happenings.... aren't they also trespassing and subject to the legal repercussions of the action?
I am kinda torn on the issue. Sure there may have been some reporters already in the capitol to report on the vote counts who stuck around to report on the later happenings. But Bushmasterboy's video shows that specific reporter entering with the crowd. While I am not on board with reporters having to be registered and badged, I also have an issue with someone claiming to be a reporter cause they have a phone or camera despite clearly being a part of the wrongdoers just to avoid penalties.

However, there have been cases of people just witnessing events being disciplined too. I remember back at CSU, we were told that if there was a riot or the like, you could be disciplined for just watching it, even if not being an active participant. Something like they are looking for an audience, you're providing that audience, which just encourages them more.
Thus, the press could be "encouraging" further activity by being there, that sort of thing.

Ok. So what if 90% of the people who entered the capitol that day claimed they were reporters with a camera (cell phones count nowadays...)? Remember, many/most didnt do anything more than wander around and take selfies and later went home. Does that fit in your broad interpretation of reporting staff?

While never officially charged, Mike Wallace and 2 members of his crew of '60 Minutes' were "detained" for a period of time back in 1986 when they joined a group of individuals who broke into a missile silo site in MO (I used to drive past the very silo site every day on my way to college back in the early 80's). https://apnews.com/article/385d58762c1642f8afdea592fab75e84
Personally, I don't care if you're an active participant in the violence or just going along to "document the activity", if your presence is in violation of the law (trespassing), your Press credentials shouldn't be a Get Out Of Jail Free card - you should be held to the sames charges/penalties that anyone else would be held to. ..."Honest Officer, I was just here to document the activity of these bank robbers; I wasn't actually a part of them as they came in and killed the Security Guard." Regardless of intent, anyone participating in a crime is held accountable. Someone dies while in the commission of the crime and EVERYONE gets charged with murder. The Press shouldn't be exempt from this. Just my personal opinion.

I know the question wasn't posed to me, but I'll answer for myself.
My interpretation: No.
Legal interpretation: Sometimes.
It's interesting how with the advent of things like cell phones and web blogs, some folks are officially classified "Press" without having any sort of official credentials - but only when it suits the powers that be. There are times when it doesn't suit the agenda off those in charge and those same individuals don't get the "Press" classification.

Except, the Press can refuse to provide information about he perpetrators of the crimes they documented under the "Freedom of the Press" exemption, making the evidence near worthless.
The Press isn't participating to gather evidence, they are there (at best) to document so their outlet can make money. At worst, they are actively participating and using their credentials as legal cover.

There was a time when America was appalled by Russia, asking it's children and people, to report anyone they felt was not a true communist. Or had "radical" ideas.
This country has been doing it for decades. So now it's ok. The hypocrisy of the left. Now that's appalling
"Press credentials" is a phrase used to describe many different things. There are no government issued licenses for journalists. Most press passes are issued by event organizers or venue owners to whoever they determine twill need access for the purpose of publishing information about the event.
Journalist = a person who writes for newspapers, magazines, or news websites or prepares news to be broadcast.
Based on this definition, anyone who takes photographs or video records anything and posts the content onto YouTube or a personal website could be considered a journalist. Beware the "officially vetted journalist" provided credentials by a company, political organization, or government agency. That journalist just may be a shill for the people who provided the credentials.
Today, anyone that can post information on the Internet is a potential journalist. Everyone has a bias. Anyone who tells you that they are unbiased is lying or delusional.

I remember reading after the Capitol riot that the officer that died, had died of a stroke. That was information directly from the head of the Capitol Police Union...someone I would assume would have accurate info.
That was QUICKLY changed to claim he died from being beat with a fire extinguisher by "the pro-Trump mob". And that's been the narrative ever since. It's been the single worst thing about the riot, that so-called conservative, pro-police people, killed a police officer. It's also the main catalyst that pushed the 2nd impeachment. It was cited during the arguments.
Except...it's not true. The officer in fact died from a stroke the next day and his autopsy showed no signs of blunt force trauma.
They did the same thing as the Russia investigation, used outright PROVEN FALSE media bullshit stories from anonymous sources as evidence.
https://news.yahoo.com/amphtml/times-corrects-record-officer-sicknick-204024018.html
A few days ago, the New York Times quietly “updated” its report, published over a month earlier, asserting that Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick had been killed by being struck with a fire extinguisher during the January 6 riot.
According to the update, “new information has emerged regarding the death of the Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick that questions the initial cause of his death provided by officials close to the Capitol Police.” As I detailed in a column last week, what the Times calls “new information” actually began emerging the same day the paper filed its January 8 report......
