Sight config for Custom M17s

I picked up this M17 Bushy a couple weeks ago and have been abusing it with my drill press. Found a few final items at the Tanner show this past weekend.

I got a good deal on the UTG folding sights. They will not zero out. I have a feeling that the front folding sight is set for gas block height. I am looking for options on setting the front and back sight on the same deck height and on the same rail. I do not want to have to sell my left testicle for the purchase. Will the Magpul MBUS sights work with this geometry? If so, does anyone carry them locally. Im going blasting on Fri.

Originally I wanted to mount and HK G36 or SL8 rail to it. But went this route. Quite happy with the feel and cheek weld. But can not get the elevation on the front sight down far enough.

how about a close up pic of the problem area? If it's just a height issue, (I don't know about these things) can't you just chop some metal off the base?

The bases are clamps that simply can not be trimmed off. New sights would be much easier. I guess If I could simplify my situation, it is with this drawing. I believe that the front sight I have was designed for a gas block mount on an AR15. I may be able to ad a spacer under the rear sight and it still may not be correct. The basic question is, what sights would you recommend for mounting on the same plane or rail? For example like on an SR25.
I was looking for sights that seemed reasonable in cost for this application. Any suggestions appreciated, hoping to pick up locally. I had seen the Magpul MBUS but wasnt sure if it was gas block front and rail rear mount, or if it would work for my situation, mounted on the same rail.

Well, after putting 4-30 round mags down the pipe flawlessly with the 4x rangefinder, I am not going to sweat the open sights. Took about 10 shots to dial it in at 100yrds. Groups with in 3 in with Remington 55gr. I will keep my eyes open for a back up set or a new front with lower profile.

Palepainter, this is what I did. The rear sight is just a standard sight. The front sight is a MI that was made for mounting on a free float rail. I've found that they line up nicely. Since my rail is level, both sights are on the same plane. Just an idea. Many companies makes flip up sights for handguards.

Thanks for that Bullpup! I appreciate the insight. What charging handle are you using on your pup?

I had my rifle sent to Kurts Kustom firearms in Florida. He did the rails and the charging handle. As near as I can tell he cut down the original charging handle and then put a type of "T" handle into it. It definately works well when I have a scope mounted on it. If I remember correctly you can just order the charging handle and install it yourself. However, it is a pretty long wait.

Now I like the looks of that. How much did it cost you?

I can't remember how much the original rifle cost me as I got it for a graduation gift from college. I believe, however, that it was right around $650. Having the rails and the charging handle installed were $200.
