View Full Version : Big Snow, maybe
I love a good springtime upslope! The models are still all over the place but starting to come together. We're certain to get at least a foot by the time it's over. But the potential still exists for four feet or more. Bring it, we'll take all the water we can get.

Just in case, if anyone missed the Snowmageddon 2019 thread

Good advice GG. We're seriously hoping for several big, historic level snowstorms over the next six weeks. It would be okay to get 6 feet like we had in when, 2003? when it buried the truck to the roof top. We cleared the driveway by hand shoveling 3 days before the state opened the highway. Now I have a snowthrower.
It's terribly shy on snowpack this year. I was scanning through photos I took in 2017 when we had three times the snow that we do now. And after the historic fires that forced us to evacuate last October, most all the mountain folk here want as much water we can get in the drainages before summer. Bring it on, we're ready.

Well, I listened to the news about the snow.
We got provisions from the store.
We filled the water containers.
We filled the gas tanks in the vehicles.
We checked the spare propane tanks.
Damn, I jinxed it all and the storm will move north now.
More fun and games in the Land of Ice and Snow.

Had to Google Search
Peaceful Valley Campground is situated in a glacial valley, on the banks of the Middle Saint Vrain Creek at an elevation of 8,500 feet in northern Colorado.
The campground has some conifer trees with open grassy areas.
Yes, we're below the terminus of a glacial moraine that holds beaver ponds in a willow carr. Here, the river plunges in rocky cascades. It's in a vortex where snow dumps after crossing the Continental Divide. We typically get twice as much snow as 3 miles downstream.
2 different threads started a minute apart.. which one is going to prevail?
My weather app says 40 degrees for Saturday with 2-3 feet possible.. hmmm, we shall see.

Ha! I had a similar experience. Took me 2 days to just dig out the driveway, $300 to get a guy to bulldoze the 200 yards of unmaintained road, and 9 days before the maintained road was cleared. Got a snowblower that summer. Got quite a workout.
For all the older guys, don't forget that peak heart attack season is right during/after winter snows. Don't let ego get in the way of hiring someone where needed, shoveling epic amounts of snow is a lot harder on the body than our body will let on. Really be careful if you honestly haven't ran, biked, or done real cardio workouts in years.

Truth in that, dated a ER nurse years ago and she would have daily stories of "old guys" coming in with heart attack symptoms after shoveling snow from a big storm. She stated it was her number 3 patient killer after illegal drug OD's on a yearly basis. Forgot what the other big killer was but that statement has always stuck with me.
Good times coming.....

I always heard those were pictures out of Canada.
wow, 40" is a monster storm; heck, anything over 12 will cause some major issues.
I wonder how much will get to the springs.....mostly it will depend on when it hits; rain or snow or both or neither. Reports are for 8" to 2 feet.
Time to make sure that the cars cover the area I need clear....

A real meteorologist was on last night and explained the differing predictions for the week-end snow.
All of the models are using satellite information and reports from buoys while the storm is over the ocean, which can not be used to predict potential snow fall.
It is not until the storm hits land when sensors and weather balloons can be launched into the storm that the models start predicting with any accuracy.
And so, no one knows what the snow fall will be. It is all guesswork until data is available.
Much like anything else science related.
The exact path is in question as well, but *sources seem to agree that the storm won't miss Colorado completely.
*I only read one place that said it won't miss Colorado completely.

That was in Fulton, NY, about 12 yrs ago or so. Sent to me by a co-worker at the time. Some BITCHIN' lake effect snow off Lake Ontario, not uncommon up there. And that's not a "snowblower", that's a full-size industrial front-end loader with a blower attachment on it. Blow up the photo.
That's some serious shit up there. Colorado thinks they know snow, HAH! Talk to upstate NY, and many other places. Yeah, we get snow - but other places get SNOW!

Yep, I was in the line, and it was related.
Experience talking - do not want to be out in a snow storm with no gas. Nope, nope, nope!
Short story - was doing weather research in northeastern Colorado in the early 70's.
Government provided truck had a faulty gas gauge.
Snowing hard,
Gas gauge full

5 mile walk in moderate snow, not the fabled blizzard, but still miserable enough.

There's a Murphy Express on Bromley in Brighton just east of Hwy 85 that sells ethanol free. Just checked my App and it's $2.98/gallon. It's 87 octane. I've got a 55 gallon drum with an electric pump on it that I try to keep full for my lawn tractor and various motorized equipment. If things seem unstable, I also fill another 40 gallons in jerry cans. If nothing else, it makes it easy to skip the lines when panic ensues.
I?ll just gas up on Saturday.
The weather should keep a lot of people indoors so I don?t anticipate big lines at the pumps.
I get my ethanol free stuff at the Mavericks at 112th and Colorado.

Yeah, I didn't understand the rush for gas on a Tuesday for a Sat/Sun storm. Their cars aren't going to be full anymore come Sat. Wait in a super long line for gas only to have to do it again later in the week? No comprende.
Plus, if it's as big as they think it may be, they won't be driving during the storm anyway. It's not like the storm is going to sneak up on em and strand them without gas on their way home from work midweek. MAYBE during Friday rush hour. Maybe. But then filling up Thursday night or Friday morning would make much more sense.
I do however understand a running out to fill gas cans to run generators and snow blowers. Heavy wet spring snow measured in feet = potential power outages. But funny thing, I haven't seen any gas cans in any gas lines. Weird.

I go there, or the Maverick at 70 and Chambers. The generator has never seen anything but ethanol free gas or propane.
I'll fill up my van tomorrow, and maybe my Trooper. Most of my gas cans are full. I might fill my two empty ones, but I hate them so much I think I'll throw them in the trash and buy new ones instead.

The 2003 storm shaped up a lot like this one with a big difference: It had the remains of a tropical storm in the Gulf feeding it moisture. I'd be surprised if we get more than a foot. I did make sure the generator will start and run, though.
My kid says it won't even rain. I told her we'll have at least 12". I'm hoping for the full 48".

Thanks for posting this.
I notice Chatfield Marina is listed for Littleton.
Closed until April and for boats only.
And, it is more than $1 per gallon more since they have to truck it in, store it with spill containment, and have a person unlock and pump it.
But, most boats won't drink anything but ethanol free.
Booo, weather used to show snow for 4 days straight, but now it's only showing Sat and Sun, then again on Weds. I already feel let down.
Might try stilts. Could be easier to get a hold of on short notice.

Most Maverik stations have ethanol free for roughly the same price as premium unleaded.
Maverik is the big chain that seems to have the best support for that fuel nation wide - well; at lest from here to Wisconsin/Minnesota.
I do get a tad bit better performance in my truck when I run ethanol free...mostly I use that style fuel on long trips to extend my driving range.
We need snow; just not sure if we need it all at once.

I hadn't thought of that. Good thinking. Can't make any with price of lumber.
Drywall stilts would be the thing
You could stack them on top of the moms.
Anyone seen calf snorkels for sale? My baby cows aren't that tall.
You might try growing taller calves with long legs like moose, a genetically engineered cross and 6000 lbs. on the hoof.
It's snowing heavily here right now as darkness falls. One prediction is for 63" in Estes Park and we usually get more here.

What do you do with 50 snow shovels ? .... Sell them from the back of your SUV at 5X the price to the folks you deprived them of at the hardware store ?

People are stupid. They would rather wait 30-60 mins than spend an extra $1.30 to fill up their prius.
Got all ethanol free, 20 gal at $2.88 (10 cents off), then filled the rest of the way up, at the Brighton Murphy's today. Wasn't really any busier than it usually is. Ethanol free is only 8 cents more than my required octane anyway for the tune in my F150. Was about $90 to fill.

Alright, bumpkins. Let me tell you how some city folks roll.
Some people don?t cook or eat at home. The convenience of big city living makes grabbing food on the go or going to a restaurant quicker and easier than trying to keep food at the house. If your lifestyle is such that eating at home is not a regular occurrence and suddenly you might have to go for a couple of days without being able to get to your usual eating establishments then suddenly stockpiling groceries becomes a priority.
I can?t explain the gas thing though. Not sure why the rush is on to top off your tank in anticipation of possibly not being able to drive anywhere for a couple of days. I guess that?s the same logic as running out and buying condoms knowing full well that there is probably a zero percent chance you are going to be getting laid any time soon.

I always get a kick out of the home search tv shows, where the homeseekers admit they do not cook and a kitchen is not a priority.
As for filling the gas tank before a cold spell, I always have done that to reduce moisture in the tank.

I always try to top off my tank in the chance I need to leave the house for an emergency of to help others. I wouldn’t know how long I’d be in the road so having a full tank is important.
Yeah, for sure, filling up the tank is like disaster preparedness 101
My relatively new truck has an inverter in it which will produce AC Power if I need it, so makes sense to top it off, for more than one reason.
It's also good to top it off so we can all leave them idling for 24hours straight to sufficiently warm up the planet to help melt all the snow off .00001% faster, thereby maybe saving a fish in the streams from dying from excessive salting of the roads.

That reminds me of my first trip to Africa. 30 day overland tour going from Nairobi to Johannesburg, mostly camping along the way. One gal on the tour had brought a case of condoms; I forget the total count, 100, 150? She did think to bring a clothesline -- one of those 6 ft jobbies that stretches across a shower with suction cups on both ends. I took 2 lengths (100 ft each) of paracord so she got to hang her stuff up to dry anyway (as did the others on the trip).
FWIW, I get a lot of takeout through the week but I'd still keep more than 2 days worth of food in the pantry just in case.

FWIW, I get a lot of takeout through the week but I'd still keep more than 2 days worth of food in the pantry just in case.

Nothing up here at 5:25 am.

No on seeding & fertilizing, the fast melting heavy snows will wash everything off down the gutter or to that low spot in the yard. Then you will have one heavily seeded/grassy spot or one spot burned from too much fertilizer when things warm up.
Finally snowing in Elizabeth
Just started snowing lightly in Highands Ranch.

Okay, I was thinking more that the weight of a big, wet, snow would push the seeds into the soil, but I could see it going the other way as well.
With the recent and coming snowstorms the forest service, county and other mountain forest properties have been burning slash piles by the thousands to reduce fuels.

https://www.denverpost.com/2021/03/13/denver-weather-snowstorm-saturday-sunday/
Update at 3:25 p.m.: Though Colorado’s highly anticipated snowstorm appeared calmer than expected Saturday afternoon, experts warn both intensity and accumulation will pick up in the evening hours.
Right now, the northern foothills and portions of the I-25 corridor in Larimer County are experiencing the most snow, said Zach Hiris, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Boulder. But after sunset, the temperature will drop and conditions will be more favorable for upslope snow across the entire region from Denver to Wyoming.
“As the winds blow east to west, you’ll have this gradual rising motion and that helps generate extra snow because you cool the air as it goes up and that also makes it a little bit more moist,” Hiris said. “Accumulations haven’t been all that impressive today, but the set up for tonight and tomorrow looks favorable for long duration heavy snow.”
Meteorologists still expect up to a foot-and-a-half of snowfall in Denver, up to two feet in Boulder, and more than that in the foothills by the end of the weekend.
Lots of wiener comparing going on. Ya'll got nothing on 1913. https://www.outtherecolorado.com/news/looking-back-86-inches-of-snow-falls-during-1913-blizzard-in-colorado/article_762efa70-3659-11eb-8281-7306667b31f2.html
And even then, 1913 had nothing on 1899 Breckenridge: https://www.breckenridgeassociates.com/blog/fun-fact-we-found-a-time-capsule.html
79 straight days of snow. No supplies or trains were able to make it in for something like two straight months. People didn't just dig out, they literally had tunnels coming out of some of the shops and homes. 40 foot drifts. And they still survived. Kids had fun. The hardiest Coloradoans would be the wildlife/livestock that "lived through it" not the warm and snuggly people.

I was mostly pointing out the continuing misinformation and exaggeration that the ?media? insist on engaging in.
If you believe what you see and hear in the ?news? then this is worse than that storm in the 80?s.
I wasn't here until '84 but the storms in 1997 and 2003 were pretty intense as well. About 2" on top of the hot tub here in Foco
I heard stories that back in the 60's, it got so cold in GJ that the power lines started snapping, they hadn't anticipated that level of negative temperatures even being possible and didn't put enough static sag into the lines. That said, I wasn't alive, so I can't vouch for it, and the historical weather records I'm finding on a brief online search seem to start with the weather satellites (70's) so I don't know if it is in fact, true. I don't know anyone living there in the 60s to ask anymore, either.

The 82 storm was so bad because the city didnt do shit and the wind drifted it so bad. in 2003 the plows were out from the get go no wind and i have pics of that one also i chained up all four and got out after I snow blowed all day and night to keep up with it. each side of my drive way was over ten feet tall. If you would have had the wind of 82 in 2003 it would have been much worse. you cant always judge accumulation the wind can make it much worse.

Christmas 82 blizzard. I didn’t make it home for four days and got damn little rest during that period. I was driving a tow truck at the time for the company that had the Denver towing contract (C&C Towing).
The city was basically shut down for a solid week, even if you were able to dig yourself out you couldn’t get far because roads were impassable due to stuck cars. I started at 2am one morning clearing cars off of I25 heading north from I225. I finally finished 14 hours later at 58th Avenue. 400 some odd stuck cars pulled out of traffic lanes by any means and dumped on side streets at the closest exit. I didn’t bother taking them out of gear, hook it, skid it, shove it, drag it by the bumper it didn’t matter, had to get them cleared so the highway could get plowed. The Highway Department had fun helping clear the highway, a plow and loader can fuck some shit up.
The next night I had to do the same thing on 14th Avenue from Broadway to Yosemite, same mode of operation, clear the road by any means. I pulled over a light pole winching myself out causing about 6 blocks to go dark. That was 12 hours with just over 200 cars moved.
I had a guy flag me over at Hampden and Monaco, when I pulled over he said he needed a ride to the airport, I told him I wasn’t a taxi. 5 crisp Benjamin’s got him to the airport.
Even once they got the roads clear there was so much hard pack and ice on the roads you would get stuck in the ruts. I remember not being able to change lanes on Evans because the wheel track ruts were so deep.
That blizzard was instrumental in getting Federico Pena elected as Mayor of Denver, he pushed the narrative of McNichols mismanaging the response to the storm and Pena promised to use trash trucks with plows to clear residential streets.
Guess who got to pull out stuck trash trucks the next year?
Good times.
March of ‘03 was good, I was with CDOT and our patrol plowed 36, 287, 121 and 128. We fared ok, we chained up early and didn’t get any plows buried. A few other patrols got trucks stuck and once that happened they lost roads.

We've got maybe an inch on the roads here and it's barely snowing right now. A lot can change overnight and this may yet hit hard tomorrow. But up to this point, it's much closer to "No-mageddon" than "Snowmageddon".
City plow just made a pass down my street. Centennial plows residential streets thankfully, still only about 2”, be interesting to see what the morning will be. Don’t forget to set your time keeping devices ahead an hour.
It has developed slowly and who knows what we'll end up with. Hardly historic yet but 7 inches here is a welcome start. More please.

The weather forecasters do a pretty good job of declaring "it will snow" or "it won't snow". However, their attempts at snow quantity estimations are awful. Asking the Magic 8 Ball would yield better results.
It stopped snowing at my house.
Who knows what will happen overnight, but so far it's more Fauxpocalypse than Snowpaocalypse here in east Aurora. Maybe 4 inches on the grass an inch or so of wet slush on the driveway. I was 16 during the 82 storm, and had to chain up my Datsun station wagon to get to my community service in Golden that following Monday.
Snowpocalypse fail.
Maybe 2" out here. Weather station wind spinny things are frozen, but have very slight wind.
Wind can determine the success or failure of a storm. Our "bomb cyclone" a few years back was a good example. 70+ mph winds, along with about 14" of snow. I left my car in a drift and walked to a friend's house about a mile out. Yard was empty of snow, except the 8ft tall drift across the driveway. 8hrs of shoveling got the 4 wheeler out. A tractor arrived and got my car out of the road.

Yeah, so who remembers Weatherman Bowman? The longtime KMGH 7/KLZ weatherman who was one of the best Denver meteorologists that got it right maybe 30 percent of the time.
Back then the best they had was a few balloons and reports from pilots. Modern weathertech forecasting is amazing.

We have about 9 inches on the grass, about 5 on the driveway. It's coming down about an inch an hour so maybe the weather guessers will get lucky.
about 8 - 12" here - there was a bit of melt off during the snow storm so it is hard to tell. Now if the temps were about 10 degrees colder there would be feet of more snow out there today. I got out yesterday a few times to brush off the slush from the drive way.
The stuff here is real wet and packs well, and the snow fall amounts are based on what is on top of a bird feeder.

Ugh. This stupid drift is going to be a PITA to clear. Pedal to the floor and hope it falls off the back??https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210314/0f43e3127d12b51fb9635c3857e6aee7.jpg

We are lower than Mtneer, and have depth measurements all over the place. My truck topper, which is open to the elements and has low thermal capacity, shows 14.5", but you can tell it has already auto compacted quite a bit. We had significant pre-snow moisture, which is also helpful for the water situation.
Check out my sweet JDM Camry.

Self clearing traction weight. If you can go fast enough to blow it off, you don’t need it anymore.......
Damn snow ! Spent more than just a little bit of time clearing my driveway & sidewalk, also elderly lady next door. Now that I am done, there’s another 4” on them.....
We've got about a foot here in COS, drifting against the house to about 2.5-3 feet in places. I did the first run of the snowblower at 1030 this morning and it was extremely wet and heavy, my little single-stage honda was struggling to move it. I'll do another run tonight after dinner and then again in the morning if it keeps coming down. Good stuff, I hope it keeps falling like this, we need the moisture.

My deck is about 3.5’ above grade. The snow is level with it.85476
can one of the mods rotate that image please?
Getting out of the ‘hood may be a challenge in the morning- the only road out currently has 2 trees down on it.

More wind than snow in my area of the Springs. I've shoveled the driveway 3 times but I think total accumulation at my house has been around 5 or 6 inches.

Thanks amigo!
I got out this morning to see if I could make it to the county road, and did. Then went to my neighbors to feed their horses for them, he just had knee surgery and can't hardly walk yet. Seemed like the snow was about 12" on the flat and the drifts weren't enough to stick the Tacoma. Not a chance to get out now. The storm decided to blizzard us for a few hours now, and the 'ol tractor and snow blower are going to get a workout in the morning. Yeehaw...at least we're got some much needed moisture.
16? in Stapleton with A ton of slush on the grass
The wind is blowing too fast in Aurora, close to blizzard conditions, if it was snowing harder. Probably 12" flat snow, and 24" drifts.

Lost power for 12 hours. Drifts from 6" to 6 ft. Gonna be busy tomorrow.
Last evening I measured 7" when I shoveled the walk, measured 19" more this morning, and another 3" fell through the day, so about 29 inches so far.
This morning I got out the Toro snowthrower to clear around the cabins and vehicles.
Knowing the snowplow would have a tough time moving so much and would constrict the driveway and parking areas. So, I opened the driveway with the snowthrower. My cousin pitched in to work the machine for the first time. Six hours with the snowthrower. We can get out now and the snowplow will be able to handle the rest.
Snow is to continue here through Thursday. With luck maybe we'll get a foot more.

Looks like it finally stopped up here. 3' or so I guess. No less. No sign of the damn plows yet though.
Lots of drifts here. 2'-3' so far.
Went out to shovel. Hod to go out the back door and trudge around as it was drifted about 3 feet deep against the front door. Cleaned off the front porch and a path to the garage but I'll get up at 0500 to shovel the rest, as the wind made shoveling an exercise in futility. Probably 16-18 inches of actual accumulation, but hard to tell with the wind.

I'm thrilled right now. I really wanted a big storm. This is awesome.
I twice cleared my driveway, three neighbors' drives and 400-500 ft of sidewalk with the blower today. There's a whole bunch of snow out there. Kids love it. Dogs love it. But my brittany just isn't made for wet snow. This is after a 3 min trip outside. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20210315/665e5cf25c9eab1723d5a8678b16c94d.jpg
Bout 12? in the morning. Another maybe 6? by this evening.

Aw, poor pup. I'd have taken her into the tub and given a warm wash with the shower wand. Maybe she'll grow more hair and get custom snow booties. Yeah, great photo.

Yeah, great photo. She loves bouncing through the snow. I called her in after a few minutes because I knew she'd be covered and she reluctantly came. She got a warm shower right after this picture. ;)
Next trip out she wore her hunting chest guard and that helped.
My Snoop Dawg's like, "yeah, fuck that - I'll piss on your floor first....."
Our princesses have been roughing it all day. No, they're not spoiled at all...

Still snowing here . . . albeit lighter and the wind has really died down. Also, the snow has switched over to a much lighter variety which helps. I have no idea how much we got in real numbers, but there's gotta be 3 ft in my front yard from the drifting. Back yard has 2 ft easily.
Just got back in from round four of clearing. There's a couple in their 80's on the opposite corner from me and I cleared their drive and walk when I did mine. Need to get over to my mom's tomorrow and get her dug out.
Don't forget, tomorrow is trash day.

Looks like I might have snow day tomorrow and I'm not the one snowed in.[gohome]
I spent 2 hours on the tractor making sure I have a good chance of getting out in morning.[facepalm]
I could have been playing on the quads. At least til I got em stuck.

Can I borrow the tractor? Haha
I have an appointment to take my RZR to TFOGGER tomorrow, but I just looked and there is a waist high drift on each side of my trailer and the RZR is full of snow to the top of the doors. This should be fun.
Side streets are garage be safe out there anyone commuting
I?m going to take the day off and deal with the snow some more.
Besides, I haven?t even tried to dig the company truck out yet.
The office closed today so I don't have to take the day off. My body is pretty damn sore today. I shoveled a half dozen times yesterday. Figured I'd rather shovel three inches of snow a bunch of times rather than a bunch of snow once. Had to clear a path from the backdoor to the yard so the dog could do her business.

I finally realized yesterday that I have the most expensive snow blower in the world... The kind that was given to me "free".
I've been struggling with this thing for about 10 years now because I had zero initial investment in it. I don't know how much money and time I've put into it, but it's more than care to tally up. Tuneups, both amateur (me) and professional ($$$), broken parts replaced, shear pins left and right, etc. So middle of last week, I get it out, make sure it starts and runs, I figure I'm all set. I briefly considered just biting the bullet and getting a new snow blower, but the cheapskate in me is like "naw, I got this".
So yesterday, I'm almost excited to get my "free" snowblower in action! It's at about a foot or maybe 18" as I make my first pass down the driveway and out along the sidewalk... And then it dies. Refuses to come back to life. Of course, it will start up after 10 pulls and run for 30 seconds, giving me false hope everytime, but I can't get it to stay running. I'm sure it's something little, and I'm sure it can be fixed for $5 in parts and $50 in know-how, but that was the last damn straw for me.
So in the middle of snowmegedon 2021, I'm driving to Lowes to pick up their second to last snow blower, which needs to be partially disassembled to fit into the back of the Jeep, because I figured it's cheaper than the heart attack I would incur shoveling.
Anyone want a free snow blower?

Our house faces South, and after our first Winter here in 2017 I sold the snow blower because the snow never stayed around long enough for me to need it.
This storm is the only time since then that I've really regretted selling the snow blower. When we lived in Englewood we had a big driveway that was partially shaded so I used it a lot (I had to, if I didn't, the snow would turn to ice and then it would be there for literally months.)
What's worst is that we're on a corner, so I get to shovel TWO sidewalks.
Final measurement was about 18" here in Columbine.
Ugh. Right elbow is killing me from shoveling last night. Can?t hardly lift my coffee mug this morning without pain.
Note to all of you young guys- don?t ever get old.

Ha ha, I sympathize, messing with finicky small engines is one of my least favorite things. But, I'll bet Irving would dig into it....
