View Full Version : Carry a Proper Holster...please

**WARNING - GRAPHIC STORY**
I recently had a good friend of mine, fellow veteran, who I proudly served with experience a very bad negligent discharge. I'm only going to list the basics of what happened as that is what's important. For the record, he is not a forum member.
He was carrying a popular 9mm, striker-fired subcompact handgun in a DeSantis Gunhide "Invisible Agent" holster (pictured below). The holster was sitting close to the 2 O'clock position on his right side. After being seated for some time, he stood up and proceeded to grab his belt directly over the firearm and pull his pants up slightly. Upon doing so, material from his shirt that was bunched up inside the trigger guard proceeded to engage the trigger, causing the handgun to discharge. The bullet was a 115 grain Fort Scott Munitions TUI projectile. The round entered the lower portion of his belly, travel at an angle, exiting the belly, striking the left side of the scrotum, entered the inside of the left leg and exited through the rear of the left leg. The projectile missed the femoral artery by the grace of God. For those curious, yes, his wedding tackle was left intact. He is humbly recovering at home and regrets sacrificing safety for comfort. Lesson learned the hard way.
Regardless of what or how you carry, folks...please carry a quality holster and especially one that covers the trigger guard properly. If money is an issue, please reach out to me and I will assist in any way I can. I care about you all and I pray we never have to see another story like this on here.
Stay safe.

Interesting that maker shows the holster featuring a gun with a full DA trigger and a manual safety.
I appreciate the reminder and ?teaching? for new folks... why a ?holster? like that even exists is beyond comprehension for me... you might as well just put it in your waistband or pocket.
I also want to commend the Op for his discretion for the benefit of the individual in the story as well as his willingness to assist with holsters for cash-strapped members if they?re in need.

When I saw the picture I thought this was an April Fools post. I had no idea that DeSantis (a company that generally makes decent stuff) would sell such an obviously stupid holster. I mean an Uncle Mike's universal nylon crap holster would be better than this.
I didn't think anyone made a holster that didn't cover the trigger (protecting the trigger from getting pulled accidentally is basically half the job of a holster).
Definitely a poor design and a poor choice on his part to choose such a design to carry the kind of firearm he was carrying.
I?m a huge supporter of properly designed kydex holsters. I know some people prefer quality leather gear but the fact that kydex doesn?t lose its shape or deform like leather can do make them the best choice in my opinion.

A Shoot through pocket holster...
But not suitable for anything without a manual safety.

With trigger pin, trigger, and mag release not installed on the gun. I think Desantis did a horrible job of properly representing the product.
It's no accident that my favorite CC pistol (Walther PPS Classic) is in a holster that covers the trigger, and the pistol has a striker that protrudes from the back of the cover when the trigger is pulled back. I put my thumb over the back of the slide so that I will get a tactile indicator if the trigger is being pulled back by part of my clothing as the pistol is being holstered.
Sorry to hear about your friend's unfortunate educational opportunity. Hope he rapidly makes a full recovery.

Like others have said that is a horribly designed holster. Hope your friend heals up without issues. I'm sure he learned a painfull and expensive lesson.

Do they have a warning on that holster to not carry certain guns or carry without a round in the chamber? Very poor design. Hope your friend heals quickly.

The picture shows, you are only supposed to carry a gun without a trigger.
Hope your friend heals up quickly.

I have the well known “box of holsters”, every one of them covers the trigger. I never even thought of getting a holster that didn’t.
I hope that your friend recovers fully and pays more attention.
Thank you all very much for the "well wishes". I check in with him every couple of days and as of yesterday he said he's "sore, but recovering". He definitely feels embarrassed and being a fellow "gun guy", his pride is pretty bruised. Once the dust settles a bit more, I'll have a heart-to-heart with him and give him crap for knowing a guy who makes custom kydex holsters and then ended up shooting himself with one of my competitors crappy holsters. I have a few OWB revolver belt holsters in the Bill Jordan style with exposed trigger, but they are intended for guns with a full-weight, full-stroke DA trigger and have a retention strap that blocks hammer movement. They also work for SA revolvers.
Any plans to post this on a more public website? People need to know.

I?ve seen it in some other websites that are a little more national.

That’s nuts.
Or nearly no nuts.
Thinking Desantis is wide open to litigation on this one.
Of course a holster with a firearm without a trigger is safe.....

I'm currently carrying with a leather holster I've had since 2001 (and this has been my primary EDC gun/holster since) and it hasn't deformed or lost its shape.
That holster reminds me of this one.

I don’t know.. just looking at it I have to think that any rational person would see that and think it’s a bad idea. Honestly, I can’t say that I feel any sympathy for anyone that thinks that holster is a viable solution and then has a problem with it afterwards.

The fact that the manufacturer intentionally marketed that holster with a gun that had it's trigger removed makes me think they KNEW showing it with an exposed trigger would be negative for sales. Might be problematic for them...
OUCH! I always stress this when training people - have a proper holster, don't get one with manual retention release unless you are going to training religiously with it, always carry with a round in the chamber, etc. But people being people, we are always looking for better, faster, cheaper :). Be safe out there!
Thank you!

Same. The leather has molded to me and the gun. No loss of retention and I could make it snugger if I needed it to be (Tucker Gunleather 'Texas Heritage'). I also have one that is leather lined kydex on the outside and rough-side out leather on the inside (Tucker Gunleather 'The Answer'). Best of both worlds.
Being someone that needs a belt and has to adjust it regularly, I could easily see how grabbing the belt could have the thumb on top of the belt and finger on the trigger through the pants as you're pulling upward. Just a bad design and the marketing is really poor. I can't necessarily say it's intentional, but no matter how you slice it, it isn't proper.

It most likely came with the disclaimer "Only use as pictured" in the fine print.
