Air Force, Raytheon conduct successful hypersonic missile test (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/technology/air-force-raytheon-conduct-successful-hypersonic-missile-test/ar-AAOSWaI)
"The HAWC free-flight test was a successful demonstration of the capabilities that will make hypersonic cruise missiles a highly effective tool for our warfighters,? said Andrew "Tippy" Knoedler, HAWC program manager in DARPA's Tactical Technology Office. "This brings us one step closer to transitioning HAWC to a program of record that offers next-generation capability to the U.S military."

Holy hell...

What if one of these mach 5 cruise missiles overflies a populated area?

...or is that one of its capabilities as a "weapon"? [Coffee]

Holy mach-5, Batman!

At that speed, to hit a building in Tehran you'd have to start your left turn in Albuquerque.... (with apologies to Bugs)....

I believe that's the whole point...

I wonder what the sonic boom of said device would be.

Does it fly as low as tomahawk cruise missle?

Likely small and not noticeable at the altitudes they would fly.

I doubt that it could fly Mach 5 at low altitudes. Due to the thicker air at low altitudes, the skin of this missile might heat up to its melting point. IIRC, the SR-71 Blackbird spy plane could fly at approximately Mach 3 at 60,000 feet and above. Even up there, its skin got very hot. But who knows, maybe the Air Force has developed a tough new material composed of asbestos, Kevlar, Hilary Clinton's used panties, and Unobtainium for the missile's skin.

Now it makes sense why all those emails got deleted.

I would imagine that there?s a trade-off between wanting as little atmosphere as possible while still having enough air to power the engines. I want to see some videos of this just to piece it together in my mind.

Sonic booms actually decrease as speeds go up.

I think that the Russian and Chinese hypersonic missiles use rocket engines instead of jet engines.
