I rented that movie once...

Looks like we have a branch breaker headed our way.

We had one three years ago, I think on the same day. I had to borrow a chainsaw to tend broken branches in my condo complex, resting on cars.

Pretty sure I torrented that one.

I did go out and unhook the hose bibs though.

Ugh, I hope they are wrong on the snow accumulation. We have about 100 trees. This could be a mess.

Couple degrees either way make a big difference.

We're looking at a possible 27 inches of snow. Been preparing all evening.

We sure need the water as the forests are dry. Rivers are running full early and the snow will add a lot more CFS to the flow. 100 cubic feet per second here yesterday. Spring flooding in a drought.

The 2013 flood reached 1300 CFS here.

I figured I'd better check this thread out. Thought my wife might have been talking about me again.

woohoo, might have green grass yet this summer. Bring it on.

Finally put fertilizer down yesterday. Didn't see any need to before now. Hope the brown grass comes to life.

Got the hoop houses sealed up around my garden last night. We use them every year for this very reason plus to keep things cozy during cool nights and protect from hail, etc.

Covered the hoops in blankets as well. May have to add some supplemental heat if it gets any lower than predicted. It's already 37 at my place. I'm not so sure the forecast 32deg is going to be accurate. At this rate, it's going to be lower.

Not going to let the tomatoes and peppers die on my watch. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20220520/695febb4699d3ef7ae45563e377badbd.jpg

hollohas, you might want to put another plastic covering over the blankets in case of moisture-a tip I learned from a master gardener at O'Toole's a few years ago. She highly recommended a second plastic layer with a blanket in between, keeps the moisture from freezing the blankets and seeping through the first plastic layer.

Also I knew May in college, I think the most she ever got was 6" [Coffee]

Fantastic advice, thank you.

I have a few seed starting heat mats in the hoop houses too just to give me a couple degrees of cushion. They won't add much, but maybe just enough to make the difference.

Some shots taken a few minutes ago. A yearling bull moose takes a stroll in the stream to check out the dipper nest box. A pair of American Dippers completed building a moss nest inside the box a few days ago. We're able to watch from the patio and dining room window about 25 feet away.

It's snowing steadily and hundreds of hummingbirds are working the feeders. Remarkably, many are actively flycatching in the snow near the ground, probably small midges.

Well, the power just took a dump here west of Boulder in the hills. I am sure the stupid cottonwoods will be shitting themselves straight into the lines for the next 24 hours. Luckily, I got my Dad's GENERAC serviced just a couple months ago.

Thanks for the reminder to grind coffee beans and fill a couple buckets so we can flush if the power goes out. Our water system depends on an electric pump. We need to get an auto backup gen set with a dedicated propane tank. Most everyone in the mountains is vulnerable due to trees falling on power lines. But I give Excel Energy credit as they've been replacing power poles everywhere with bigger, stronger poles, and probably other improvements we don't know about.

If only the feds would bolster our national power grid with a strong redundant system backed with nuclear power.

I agree 100%, and have we also have a electric well, but with 350 gallon cistern. We are back on right now, but it's cycled a few times. Overnight will be fun.

We were on the northeast side of the snow line, moderate rain(<1") no snow.

14" here so far and power went out at 2:30am. Standby generator is humming along. Hummingbirds are not amused.

We have about 14 inches on the ground. Power out here too. Twenty degrees overnight so we brought in all the feeders. Put a dozen feeders out at 5:10 a.m. with some birds already waiting, perching and feeding as we carried them. Hundreds of birds. Desperate times.

Total miss for Ft. Collins. Some wet stuff for just a short time yesterday afternoon and that was it. Did not expect to wake up to sunny and dry. Spent a couple of hours replacing some parts on the snowblower in the afternoon, just to be ready. I guess it worked, no snow!

Got about 4” in my little area of Centennial, have one good sized branch from my Russian Olive tree in the backyard that came down thankfully on the grass and not the roof. Tried to get breakfast at one of my favorite places this morning but they don’t have power so it’s cereal today lol.

The neighbor behind me has a big tree, one large broken branch resting on his power line, another just missed the roof of his garage.

The branch I lost, the tree by the shed belongs to the neighbor next to me

We got about a quarter Beagle worth.

It was enough to snap some big branches.
This is in front of my condo. The good thing about an HOA is I don't have to deal with it.
The bad thing is I can't go out there and take care it of myself.

If the ridge of snow on the top of my fence is any indication, we've got 10"+ of wet heavy snow here in the NE-ish side (Powers/Dublin) area of COS.

Very little stuck to the roads or sidewalks though, so that's good. Hope my trees and Lilac bush can survive this. I've still got ratching straps around a tree that got damaged in the snow that came 3 yrs ago this week.

Nice blanket of heavy wet snow here! w00t w00t!

I'm on well water and this year I had an electrician install a generator hookup to the house. It's a manual process to switch over and gives me a 50 amp circuit for the house.
The connection is outside (due to generator fumes)
Fire up the generator, connect the generator outlet to the transfer box.
Inside the house panel they installed a neat plastic guard that prevents the main breaker and the new circuit from being live at the same time.
Turn off the main breaker from the grid.
Slide the plastic guard up which locks the main fuse OFF and allows the new circuit to be turned ON

reverse the order to restore

Buy enough generator for your water well motor requirements. Maybe get an even larger generator to support more house circuits pending your needs. I have a 1HP motor and chose the dual fuel (gas/propane) Sportsman GEN7500DF for the 7500 surge Watts/ 6000 running Watts.
Preferred fuel is propane to avoid the issues found when leaving a gas engine unattended in storage. Bought extra BBQ tanks that also fuel alternate cooking (camp stove with appropriate adaptor) and space heaters (crack a window)

I will give Xcel credit where credit is due. They have been working heavily over the past couple of years to trim problematic trees from the power line right-of-ways and it seems to have paid-off. We only had one session of extend outage (a couple of hours) and everything thing else has been just the short 30 sec to 2 minute breaker reset periods. I am sure also having the generator prepped and ready to go ensures power loss will be negligible (isn't that the way things work?).

The winter wonderland is not what I expected for May 21st...

18 inches of heavy wet snow northwest colo springs.
Lots of tree damage despite knocking snow off several times, the last being 2:30 am this morning.

Mother Nature trimmed the 80 year old Cottonwood in back of the house during the night.
We call it the Tree of Life because of the number of birds and critters that visit it.
Not a very neat job.
Neighbor just got out of his hot tub and said he heard continuous cracking and limbs falling while he was in it.
I guess the job is not done yet.

We got "some" moisture from the storm but with drought conditions it barely made a dent.

Mowed the lawn late this afternoon.
