View Full Version : Registering a Humvee in WY as CO resident?
Our blue overlords here have made a law prohibiting CO residents from legally registering former military Humvees in CO. In fact if you previously had one registered, it will not be allowed to renew. The only way to legally drive one in the state now is off road only.
What is stopping me from getting a PO Box in Wyoming and using that as my address to register the Humvee in Wyoming with Wyoming plates and then from time to time drive it down here in Colorado?
In theory, if I had a hunting property in Wyoming with no house on it and kept a Humvee up there in a barn there is no law saying I couldn?t drive it down here for maintenance or hauling hey down?
Interested to see how this will affect my buddy who has a registered HMWVEE here in CO.

Just wait ,it gets better as Colorado is now a CARB compliant state, yea the California Air Resource Board BS. This got snuck in jan 1st 2021. So if your cats get stolen you have to now replace them with CARB cats that cost twice as much. Also going to affect emission standards for the whole state. This state is a far cry from the one I grew up in.
As to registering vehicle out of state, I have a co worker who car has had Nebraska plates on his vehicles for the past two decades, but he has family there.

On one of the military vehicle forums some Coloradans had scheduled individual meetings with DMV to arbitrate the status of their military vehicles.
It is not just military HUMVEE owners that are getting their on-road titles pulled.
I have not gone back to read how those meetings turned out.
One alternative that was suggested is to register your vehicle in Vermont.
I didn't follow the links or read the info but apparently there is some details that make out of state registration practical.

When his registration expires he is no longer allowed to renew it. DMV is such a scam they are now able to turn down registrations.
Yeah, this affects all ex military vehicles, not just humvees. If it doesn’t have a standard vin number you will have problems.

Don’t do Wyoming.
If you want to form a LLC in Montana that is good route to go and very common.
You can also do South Dakota fairly easily or Vermont.
Google is your friend on this.

Glad I sold my last Pinzgauer when I did. I feel kinda bad for the buyer, but we didn't know about this at the time.

Utah 10 years ago was one of the best states for out of state LLC’s.

If you have a picture of Norman Schwarzkopf riding in it, you could claim it is of historical value. I'd find a loophole.

Registration of vehicles is no different than registration of Guns.

Not exactly the same but I registered a motorcycle in Vermont. Colorado required the vin check but I did not feel like going to dealer or Boulder. Missing title and a very old small displacement bike. 6 week process. Some restrictions but very painless.

This. You can get mt registration via mail with an agent and never leave co
You guys talking about 1dollarmontana.com?
Seems easy, just wondering if Colorado has any laws preventing out of state humvees from “driving through”?

Wyoming will require you to have a physical address for a vehicle registration. There are PO boxes here that appear to be a real address, but most of the county offices have a list of such places that do not qualify as a valid address to register a vehicle.

Paranoia by the .gov is the reason for these kind of laws. I have already written the state about the silliness of this legislation.
It is only American military vehicles.

That?s it! It must be that the Colorado legislature has been bought off by the Russkis!
South Dakota is cheaper, and you can get registrations, DL and CCW permits.

With Colorado embracing Ca. vehicle regulations like C.A.R.B. and generally hating on the internal combustion engine I expect this is just the tip of the spear.
Next will be all vintage/Historic gas powered vehicles, especially anything with no emissions system.

Banned by the .gov except in emergencies when they call for help. The governor should really repeal this law. This is counterintuitive to our wellbeing. Do they remember the blizzard of 1997?

Yes, I was just going to suggest this. A buddy of mine in NC who had a motorcycle that was not originally street legal was able to register his in SD.
As I understand it, NC has very strict laws on registration of motorcycles. If the motorcycle was not originally sold as street legal, it can never be registered in NC even if you put on a headlight, tail light, horn, turn signals etc.
Apparently SD has a law that specifically allows non-residents to register vehicles there. So he was able to register his motorcycle in SD and then ride it in NC with SD plates. You could check and see if the same is true of a HMMWV (it likely is.)

The question is do they enforce it? And what happens if you do get "caught"?
Many years ago I knew someone that drove a station wagon for 15 years on expired Philippine plates. He lived in Loveland.

My wife had a co worker who was from South Dakota and moved out here. She kept her SD plates for 8 years and the only reason she had to get CO plates was her own dumbass fault. She lived in Denver and parked on the street even though she had a driveway. The parking PoPo caught on to her SD plates and wrote a ticket for them. She had to get CO plates.
Had she just backed into her driveway they would have been none the wiser.
I am strongly considering titling/licensing my camping trailer in SD. CO wants $400.00 annually for a 2019 camper that sees the road a half dozen times. It would run me like $145 for SD plates annually. I may also look into for my 'Vette and Nova, no emission restrictions. My insurance company has no issue with it, she did say a daily driver would be a bit more challenging but it could be done as well.
Yeah, when I moved here in 2000 I got a Co drivers license right away but didn't bother changing my plates. Got pulled over for speeding a year or so later and the cop gave me a good warning on getting my plates changed.

Not to be the debbie downer here, and it was a while back, but be aware that CO has a program to go after out of state registrations, especially on RV's, for CO residents.

Well what about if I keep my Humvee in Montana most of the year but I just drive it down here for maintenance since I have a garage here. I mean this is a legitimate scenario for a CO resident that goes to MT for recreation and keeps a Humvee there.
Register the vehicles from out of state to a trust or LLC.

Many states are cracking down on it for RVs. They are charging people with tax evasion.

Regarding the Humvee, my response is I am trying to do business with you but you won’t do business with me.
Imagine ole TJ registering his horses, wagons, carts, and buggies with the State of Virginia, and paying an annual tax.
