Thinking of doing an L1A1 kit build
They're pretty easy to do yourself, I've built a dozen or so over the years. I'd volunteer to show you how but I've been working 6-7 days a week for the last year and there is no let up in sight.
But yeah, if you send to a gun smith be sure they actually do know FALs, the list of horror stories over at the FALFiles of guys taking their FALs to a guy that knows FALs is long.

def90 I thought that you had to have some specialized tools for the FAL but I don't know if that's true.

Receiver wrench, headspace gauges, and pin gauges at a bare minimum.
I'm out of town again for work but will send you a pm when I have a few minutes to go over it in more detail. Need to get back to dinner.
Dumb question but where are the L1A1 kits these days?

In people?s basements.

You occasionally find them on gunbroker or over at the FALFiles

I found a complete rifle built on an Imbel receiver for the price of the receiver alone so I went that route. Barrel needs to be threaded though.
