Dude is a retard, the #1 rule of survival is do not get yourself hurt.
He takes huge risks with his safety, I am surprised he hasn't ended up hurt bad.
His show is supposed to be teaching people ways to survive if they were thrown into specific situations, if people listen to him they are going to end up getting killed.
From what I hear he is a fake, nothing compared to survivorman! I do find the show mildly entertaining....

in one show he is all like "thats a 20 foot drop" the he jumps and when he gets up in the background it was more like a 5 foot drop. he's an ass hat.
He tells you during the entire show to always take the safest route, but then shows you what to do if you don't. It wouldn't be entertaining if he didn't do those things.

My kids joke if they ever have a problem they can "Pee on it" like Bear Grylls.

I enjoy Bear Grylls. He's entertainig and you can learn a thing or two from him even if some of the show is to keep audience attention. When I see him eating some of things he eats I know he's hardcore no matter what the show presents.

Ever since I seen this ^^^^ I can't take him seriously.
Nutnfancy should have a show keeping it based on what he does now.
He mentioned he was offered a similar survival show but turned it down due to it already being done.
But I would watch that guy, I enjoy all of his You Tube vids.

His show is definitely fake. Les Stroud is the man though. I used to like Man vs Wild more than Survivor man but then I found out Man Vs. Wild is staged and they give him food and shelter off camera so Survivor Man grew on me.
It's purely entertainment. 1 he always tries to find Food first, WTF.
As stated he takes bs risks that anyone alone and lost should never do.
But it is another reality show that at least ain't got a bunch of sluts trying to marry some guy they think has $$$. Or squeaking wannbe singers.

It is a show and even 'bear' has released behind the scene clips.

I like Bear, he is unsafe but has allot of useful information too. The show has to be entertaining or no one would watch it. His stuff is staged but it still shows you some options on what to do, and how to find food. I dislike survivor man after seeing more than one episode where he gives up. That is the worst thing you can possibly show in a survival situation is some one giving up. That doesn't teach you anything except how to lay down and die because it's to hard.
I've never seen him give up. Plus, doesn't he set deadlines for himself? If he didn't make it to his goal in time, what else is he supposed to do?
cowboykjohnson
02-25-2010, 14:03
Keep going untill he reaches his goal, even if he is late, like any one else would.
Then just edit it all to fit into the show. That's what I thought you'd say. There have been a few times (at least one) where his crew came and rescued him because the conditions were just unsafe. In that case, no need to die for a tv show.

I agree that there is no need to die for a TV show, but at least make it look like he made it, that would just have a better feel IMHO. It doesn't help that I'm biased, something about that guy just bugs me.

its funny for sure. I mean, he often says "I cant get across that ..." while talking to the camera. Then they show him doing it, cut and poof! the camera crew is on the other side with him.
I think the important thing to remember is, it is only a show. He tries to demonstrate what to do IF in a particular situation. That doesnt mean he is actually on a survival trip or scenario. So, who cares if he stays in a hotel at night...right?
He's proven he can compete at the highest level. He climbed Everest and he was special forces. Those are confirmed and indisputable. Not many people can do those things. I am not a Bear fan but lets keep it perspective ya know?
Cowboy, probably because after a day or two without food he gets whiny. I sure know I would. heh.
cowboykjohnson
02-25-2010, 14:24
Your probably right, I think it is that fact that he gets whiny. I'm sure I would, but I don't want to watch a guy on TV do it. Give him a damn Twinkie and might enjoy watching it more.
Survivor Man definitely grew on me. I like to hear all the info either way. Also, I get whiny after only like an hour without food.

He's a big fat phony! That show it totally staged.

Phony or not, it beats the hell out of some of the other crap on TV.
You want phony? SURVIVOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Also, I get whiny after only like an hour without food, or my dinner gets cold, or my beer gets warm, or I run out of beer, or Sniper messes with me, or Ritter talks, or I run out of potato chips, or the pretzels get stale, or somebody tries to make me drink Heineken, or Troublco gives me a hard time, or anything happens at all........

I do admire Survivorman, but he cracks me up. I saw him break the glass off his flashlight bulb and use the filament to start a fire, then try to boil water in plastic container and rupture it. In his defense, though, he does actually go hungry and I have seen him be rescued in one episode. That really was realistic!!
I'm thinking I would not be ruining a perfectly good flashlight in a survival situation, would be great to signal with or see what is around if you hear something.. Amusingly, people come up with prehistoric ways to start a fire. Why not just throw a Bic lighter in your pack and another in your pocket. They last forever if you aren't wasteful and always work..
As for boiling water, makes a great case for getting the old aluminum G.I. canteens and a mess kit. Would be worth it's weight in gold if you were in the wilderness without them.

After carefully considering the opinions expressed in this thread I have stopped watching man vs wild and I am now watching "The Jersey Shore" exclusively. "Snookie!" has replaced bear grylls as my hero.
[Puke]
Survival is a mindset, Bear grylls is trying to show that mindset in an entertaining way. If you approach the situation saying to yourself that you can climb anything, eat anything, and do anything to survive, you will be 10x better off, than the liberal mindset of I am cold and hungry, come save me.

I always wondered the same thing. Seems like a simple solution.

So, this co-worker of mine tells me this morning about Les "Survivorman" Stroud and how he had a show called "Off The Grid" where he had purchased land in the moddle of nowhere in Canada. In fact, the property had an access easement 7 miles in off of the nearest road with a few turn-of-the-20th century buildings.
I guess it's supposed to be a pretty interesting show.
Here is supposedly the entire episode on Google video:

Or on YouTube, here is part 1:

Man vs Wild = staged. Bear spends more time in a Holiday Inn Express.
There was a Bear Grylls knife that was about $700. [Whacko] Google failed me on the details.

I caught one show... he was trying to get water out of a tree limb and ignored the first rule of knife knowledge "Never cut towards you" - he darn near took his thumb off. Turned a managable situation in to an emergency situation.
He's dangerous.
When his IQ hits fifty... he should sell.

He may be fake, maybe not. But ANYONE who eats a rotting zebra carcass has titanium cajones! I really like both shows, especially the one where les is being stalked by a jaguar.

XJ, XK, XF, or R-Type? He wouldn't have been able to outrun a 12-cylinder model unless it broke down.

Ok i agree with you guys about he does a lot of things the hard way, and he does some things that the average person shouldnt do, like climb waterfalls. But if he just sat there and did everything "the safe way" why would you watch the show? I rather watch man vs wild over survivor man cause he just sits in the woods hungry all week.

Yes, Bear is fake but people watch it because he shows some "good techniques" to get food, etc. BS. 90% of what that guys says you should do might seriously injure or kill you.
In one episode he says bird eggs are great food (true) but birds nest in high places so you'll have to go get them. He proceeds to climb a multi-story industrial building using i-beams and pipes to get to the top. Besides the fact you would be risking a deadly fall if you do that because you're not a super athlete like him, you will waste a hell of a lot more energy climbing to the top and back down than you'll ever get from the two eggs you find. So stupid. If you use more calories then you take in you will starve. Plan and simple.
In another episode he says to jump in the river to get from point A to point B. "You have to get to where your going FAST", he says. Why are you in such a hurry? That's just taking too many unnecessary risks. Jumping in a river will get everything you have wet. Hypothermia anyone? Real survival experts will tell you to do everything in your power to stay DRY. Not to mention it is so dangerous, even Bear, the risk taking adrenalin junky, is clearly wearing a life jacket under his jacket.
Run down the side of a mountain covered in loose, razor sharp rocks because "you want to get down as fast as possible", he says. When you're on your own even the slightest ankle sprain will put you out of commission and will very likely result in your death. Why risk it?
Sure, it's TV so they have to make it entertaining, right? If that's the case then they shouldn't portray the show as TRUE survival advice. It is anything but. This guy's advice is dangerous. If any couch jockey fan of this show ever found himself in a survival situation and tried to use Bear's advice, he would die.
Even though I know better, every once and a while I'll watch an episode because people will tell me how great it is. The show doesn’t entertain me, it pisses me off. I can't believe people actually think the BS that comes out of his mouth will help you survive.
