View Full Version : Shooting Accident
I caught a glimpse of something on the news; two people were shot near Lyons. They said the two groups were up target shooting and unaware of each other. One was shot in the stomach and the other was shot in the rear end? It sounded like it was at the North shooting spot? Don’t know?
LOVELAND, Colo. (AP) -- Two people were accidentally shot near Allenspark, but neither appeared to be seriously injured.

The Larimer County Sheriff's office says the gunfire occurred about 4 p.m. Saturday in the Johnny Park area.
The office says two adults and two children had gone up to the area to do some target shooting, in two separate groups.
One victim was shot in the abdomen, while the other was hit in the buttocks. The office says both were hospitalized.
Apparently neither group knew the other was there until after the shooting.
The names of the victims have not been released, and officials didn't say whether the victims were the adults or the children.
All I found...

Why do I have a hard time with this? Always know what your backstop is.
I saw this on the news this am, no details provided.
I sure would like to know what and where exactly it happened.
I am curious about the location as well. hopefully it stays low key.

It bears repeating:
All guns are always loaded!
Never let the muzzle cover anything you are not willing to destroy!
Keep your finger off the trigger until your sights are on the target!
Always be sure of your target and what is beyond!

Exactly! Why would you not know what is between you and your backstop, and what is behind the backstop?!

I always wait a while up there before doing anything, look, listen, see if anything strange is out there. If nobody else is there shooting, go ahead and walk back to the backstop and check things out. seems silly... they probably just walked up and started shooting at stuff not knowing someone was working with some targets or something...
i hope this doesn't cause another rampart or similar case where they closed it to the public for shooting no matter where it is.
but agreed, when people are shooting they should pay more attention to there surroundings and where every round falls. we all know not everyone out there sees the same as we do in the basics of shooting.
lets hope for the best for the people in the hospital that they can have a speedy recovery.
Man thats scary. I hope everything turns out ok and those involved are alright.

Yep. Virtually all accidents can be avoided by following these rules. I would add make sure you have a good backstop too.

Anybody else find it funny that they managed to shoot each other at exactly the same time?

Part of me want to ask, "Why are there so many stupid people out there?", but the other part realizes what a rhetorical question that is.
I really don't understand how some people function in society. Or, sometimes, at all.

Reminds me of the old days. Heard shooting on my grandfathers ranch. Found the people, a man with his wife and three kids. They had climbed the fence (fully posted private property and no trespassing).
They were shooting toward the top of a hill with cattle walking around in their line of fire and our house over the top of the hill. I thought my grandfather was going to kill the guy with his bare hands when he tried to justify himself and argue...

Tragic! This is exactly the kind of shit, besides people intentionally shooting each other, that the gun community does not need. As stated earlier with some simple common sense, this could have been avoided. I smell a law suit, and possibly and IQ test for future gun owners. :)
I'd be happy to submit to an IQ test to buy a firearm.
.... as long as approval for welfare comes with mandatory sterilization.

I don't think there is ANYTHING funny at all about moronic adults handling loaded firearms in the presence of children. PERIOD. Gun Safety should ALWAYS be the number 1 rule taught to children to prevent such accidents. Its because of douchebags like these that we keep losing good shoot sites. I hope they are charged with reckless endangerment to a child.

Do we know if the persons who were shot were the adults, the children, from the same group or from different groups?
Not much to the story...

+1 I Like Johnny park, it's a nice place to camp and shoot that is near me. I don't want it to turn into another lefthand.

The news last night stated that they still did not have that information.
Well, I was up there for one of our meetings a couple of years ago, I was by myself and there was one group of three "adults" and four kids that were shooting at the little "pistol" area.
I went down to set up targets, and heard a ricochet go past.I look back in their direction in time to see one of the adults messing with a rifle. I yelled at him, and proceed down to where he was, and ask him if He just did not see me. He said no, at which I called BS, because I was wearing my blaze orange hoodie..
At that point I launched into a profanity laced interpitation of the commandments of safe shooting.. I went back and started setting up the rest of my stuff and within 10 minutes I noticed that they had packed up and left..
So, I do know that with stupid people, anything is possible.. He may have been lucky that it wasn't 25 years ago, when I wasn't quite as congenial as I am now.[Muaha]

Was this incident at the North spot by the Hwy 7 & 72. My wife is harping on me cause I like to shoot up there in the AM. I am usually the only one there. And the thing that baffles me, if you are up there shooting, you would probably notice the other peoples car on the side of the road.... Right? Am I wrong thinking that would be the first clue that I may have to watch for others....
Jeeeeeses .... If I have to worry about getting shot in the ass up there, I may as well drop the cash for the Trigger time membership and pay though the nose. It will be cheaper than the hospital bills to follow.
The people shot were from the same group. It appears that only one group was negligent/downright idiotic in the handling of their firearms.

This is really upsetting as I am going up there tomorrow with a friend to test out a new purchase, and don't feel like watching my back (ass) the whole time. If anyone else is going up on Weds., please don't shoot me in the ass. I happen to enjoy being able to sit down and taking a dump without a shit bag. As a matter of fact, I like myself the way I am and don't want anymore holes in me, so just don't shoot me period. Thanks.

Do these folks have different "Rules of gun handling"?
1. Drive to range
2. Unload car
3. Load firearms
4. Discharge firearms

(5. Call 911)?
Apparently they did. Except I don't think there is cell signal up there. I know one of the individuals that was shot.

There is cell service in most of the area with verizon...

I was wondering the same thing, or if it was a return fire incident or something along those lines.
Maybe it was the evil guns fault.
quite possible, I heard they are building computer chips for guns now and when they go haywire to "watch out"
So I talked to my buddy that got shot and here is the low down roughly. (I might have a couple details wrong. but this is the jist)
He and a buddy drive up to where they usually shoot. They hear gunfire so they go on down the road and check to see where it is coming from. They see a family shooting into a hill away from there direction. So they go back to where they are gonna shoot at, and the hill they are using as a backdrop is in the opposite direction of the family. So each group is shooting in complete opposite direction from the other group. All is good. Then he said the guy evidently just turns around and starts dumping a mag up the hill in there direction. Evidently he doesn't realize they are up there and he is just trying to empty the mag as fast as possible it appears, and just spraying down the hillside randomly. So that is when he got hit and his buddy came running over to pull him to cover and thats when he got hit. So there was no cell service with their phones where they were at, so they had to wait a while for someone to run down the mountain and get help etc.
So that is the story in a nutshell.

It saddens me to see that no one has said this yet:
Please let your "buddy" know that WE are glad he and his friend are alright, and wish them both a speedy and healthy recovery!
So what happened to the dumb fuck shooting in the wrong direction?

That would be too nice... It should be slow and frightening as hell.

I will pass that along. I am sure he will be glad to hear. I wanted to set the story right, since the papers are putting some blame on them, when the papers really have no idea what really happened.
I am not sure what happened to the other guy. Last time I talked to him, it was still under investigation.
Have you contacted the papers at all? You should scold them in a letter to the editor.
I have not, I know he did though. But if I am remembering right, he said they really didn't care about the truth.
