Anybody know of a fix for this?

Of all the lowers I've done (RRA, DPMS, Oly) it had to be the damn Colt that broke.

Colt makes theirs harder so in turn are a little more brittle. The only thing I know how to do is find someone that can weld Aluminum. Or send it back to Colt. I feel for ya man But unfortunately it happens.
I think Carl at BaileyGuns had this happen. He fixed it no problemo. pm him and i'm sure he'll tell ya.
dang that sucks buddy! I'll give you $10 for it![ROFL1]
as to the fix, maybe JB weld?
or someone who is really good at fixing aluminum. I think their is a very well known guy on arfcom that has fixed some full auto stuff as well for guys (very trusted).
or you can buy a Magpul MIAD full kit and use the integrated trigger guard as I think that will cover it up.
That is the MIAD on there. They guy on arfcom, is he local?

Have not personally used but..... Maybe just what the doctor ordered, a $30 fix?

Good luck, I will ask my gunsmith tomorrow about a permanent fix.

I was gonna say the same thing LOL. There may be a few after market grips that will cover it, or you could JB it no problem, I would find a TIG welder though, Just depends on what you want. It happens quite abit without the trigger guard in place to keep it from flexing in they snap pretty easy You are not the first one it has happened to if it makes you feel any better I dropped one just right on the vise one day and it snapped and another guy on here did the same thing I did not to long ago.

I thought about welding it up myself but I don't have much experience with small parts. Pisses me off that it had to be a Colt, every other lower seems to be easy to find. I'll probably give Colt a call and see if there's anything they can do for me. Thanks for the help guys [Beer]
Theres a similiar thread on ar15 right now. Maybe there are some ideas in this thread that might help you.

This is yet another reason to invest in quality tools and taking the opportunity to attend functions such as Greg Sullivan or Dean Caputo's AR15 Armorers Class.

Reading about how to do it on the web is a poor substitute for real classes. Yes its cheaper, but then you suffer incidents like this.

Very true, But regardless of the training Accidents happen, Espesialy when the Dog is barking, the kids are running around the house touching everything, and the wife is yelling at everything that moves because it is that time of the month. [Rant1][Rant1][Rant1][Rant1]

I actually liked this for a fix plus the price was right.

I'm looking him up right now. I don't think he is local.
try this guy. http://www.m60joe.com/
I would call Colt first.
not sure what this guy would charge, but it appears he does some great work.
someone local could probably do it as well. get them to weld it back on and shape it, then refinish it or paint it.

Thanks Justin, looks like he can handle it. Hopefully his rates are reasonable. I also dropped a msg w/ Colt mfg too.

So you think the rock and small screwdriver on my driveway was a bad idea?? Kidding - I can assure you tools aren't the issue:

Just one of those shit happens type of days. As I've said, I've done several trouble free without the help of the internet but I don't have any extensive smith training on AR type rifles nor do I think it's a must, kind of like saying that you must be ASE certified to change your own oil. It was just a TG install, I f'd it up and I'm over it. I can tell you that all the tools and experience will only delay the fact that shit happens. My support block shifted and well the rest is history.
That really SUCKS, hope everything works out.

That really does sick. Hope you get an undetectable fix.
Hope ya get a good fix. I did the button head screw mod. Let me know if ya want to use my tap and I got some helicoils you could use but no screws.

I have that grip on one of my carbines and I like it much better than my magpul, where the magpul makes the AR 100 percent easier to aim and manipulate, the Stark just makes more sense and gives it another 25 percent ease of manipulation (for me at least).
There was a satire I saw once called, "This Here Place" (satirizing This Old House) and the solution to just about everything was "cover it up!" The Stark does this nicely and improves the weapon.
I'm a colt armorer and the factory would have to do this one, or a COMPETENT welder who works with aluminum. I would also think that rewelding aluminum can create problems, consider that aluminum IS tempered, depending on the manufacturer different processes might be used. the "T" designation you see on the aluminum your lower is made from actuall designates how the metal was strengthened. In all cases the strengthening is essentially a process that makes the aluminum consistently (in a homogenous manner) stronger throughout the piece. Artificially heating aluminum alloys redeposits the alloying particles and WILL make the piece inconsistently hard or soft in spots and ultimately weaken the piece. If it got sent back to colt, they would put a new receiver on it and they would charge for the service.
using a screw doesn't actually do anything metallurgically, and would be the strongest solution - or the Stark grip would totally cover it.

just as FYI

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Ive learned to deal with it by throwing it in the back of the safe, haven't even looked at it since. I figure I'll pull it out if I manage to get the other one to break. IMO the broken lower with the MIAD looks better than that Stark Klingon thinggy.
