Welcome to the forum.

Are you looking for new or used rifles? Typically forums like this one will offer better deals than most dealers. Gun shows are also a good place to shop...

I would say go out, do a ton of research, and build your own.

If you buy parts used you can build an awesome ar, and shave hundreds off the price.

You make it sound like you are only gonna have one![ROFL1]

What do you want it for? Just to have and fondle? Plink? Hunting? Competitions?

How much money you got? ;)

I don't buy complete rifle, I buy stripped lowers and complete uppers. Lowers can be built by a monkey and couple of punches. Plus you get the trigger and the stock you want.

OK ,here is the deal. I am out of state , but am coming out to see my son for his birthday. I plan on getting him an ar for the event. Checked into buying one here, but would be just about as cheap to buy there after shippig and the hastle. A couple of reasonal shops or contacts would be great. Looking for basic M-4, and he can build from there. Thanks in advance.

Is it legal to buy a rifle with an out of state ID from an FFL?

I live out of state and I'm planning on getting the Ar for my son on his birthday. I was going to buy one in my state and send it out , but it would cost just about as much if buying it there. That is why I am looking for something local. Thinking of basic M4 flat-top. He can build from there. Don't have time for a build from scratch.

i know there is somthing in place maybe for just larger corporations! i work at dicks sporting goods and i work in the hunting department and i can only sell to Colorado residents and boarding states of Colorado everyone else i have to say no too. i am not sure if this is for every FFL in Colorado, but i know that is the rule where i work. we dont carry any M4's unfortunately, but lucky for you. when i was in Ohio at Camp perry only people who where Ohio residents or FFl holders could purchase serial firearms which killed me when you have RRA,armerlite,DMPS,bushmaster, basically every manufacturer there with sales and discounts like no other and i can't buy them![BooHoo] hopefully some other will shed some light on the subject.

How old is your son? Maybe you can bring him with and buy it with him as a gift, if he is 18 or older?

I might be wrong but for Long guns, as long as your a state resident that touches Colorado you can buy a Long Gun in colorado regardless if your a resident of colorado or not.

Ah, I think you'll need to have your son there and fill out the 4473. Less of a surprise, but more legal.

Off the shelf ARs by manufacturer would be Colt, LMT, Daniel Defense, and Smith & Wesson

Running the risk of getting people's panties in a bunch, read and compare "The Chart" of AR manufacturers at:

http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pwswheghNQsEuEhjFwPrgTA&single=true&gid=5&output=html

The most common and useful ARs nowadays have:
-16inch Chrome lined barrels with 1x7 twist
-railed Free-float hand rails
-collapsable stock

Forgive us if you are already fully versed in ARs, it is just a good place to start.

As far as dealers, I'd try to figure out the model I want and then start calling places like 5280 Armory, Jensen's in Loveland. I think those two are some of the most AR type orienteed places around- but like I said I order uppers on line from places like BRavoCompany and buy stripped lowers locally.

ANyone give any other dealer suggestions? Let's get this kid a nice rifle!

As for the monkey, I am the monkey. I've been told that I can mess up an iron ball, but I can put a AR lower together with household tools.

I feel that we have already grown closer, do you need another son in Colorado?

Thanks to FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS. You are the first person to actually give me the name of a place to buy from. I already own my own ar's. This is a late purchase idea, so no time to build. Yes I know he will have to put the gun in his name. The question was-- WHERE IS A GOOD PLACE TO GO!!

Well hello!

haha, my thoughts exactly!

Welcome to the forum, I hope we can be of assistance to you.

What these folks are trying to tell you is that it is considered appropriate (proper Forum etiquette) to first go into the "New Member Sign In" forum (http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=97) and post an introduction thread before launching off with requests for info.

There's still time - hop on in there and start a new thread for yourself.

ETA (Edit To Add): Sorry, posted this before reading all of your responses. Just because you aren't a CO resident doesn't mean you can't be a member here though - especially since you are an AR fan already. And, with your son getting an AR, he should definitely join this site, so... Once you get him the AR, point him this direction. We promise to look after him for you.

Two things:
(1) Adopt me!

(2) What part of the state does your son live in (knowing that can help us taylor info for you)?

edit places to go too:
+1 Jensen's arms in loveland they normally have a ton of stock very cool place lots of toys.

in boulder there is a gun shop off 14th and arapahoe called gun sport they normally have 2-6 Ar's depending. not a bad place only problem is boulder tax sucks!

5280 would be another choice closer to denver.

Thanks to all who responded. My son lives in Broomfield. I've taken care of the gun issue. I will try to post something on new member board and will pass along to my son. And I think I will pass on the adoption thing. The kids I have are expensive enough, and now there are grandkids.
