View Full Version : AR15 for 7.62x39
Does anyone make an AR upper for 7.62x39 or is it just a better idea to have an AK/SKS and an AR-15 seperate... I was just thinking about plinking ammo and 7.62x39 seems to be cheaper, et al and etc.

Build an ak ;)
Actually I've seen 7.62x39 uppers can't remeber who sells em though google or check shotgun news ads. Also for cheap plinking maybe look into a 5.45x39 upper, even cheaper than 7.62 soviet ammo wise and I've seen uppers for sale in that nice russian chambering as well, hope that helps
I thought that someone would have answered this for you already Bear, sorry. I too have heard of 7.62 AR uppers before.

Oh by the way I'm 99% sure dpms sells 7.62x39 uppers, those might have been the ones I saw on rguns
Del-Ton, Olympic, Bushmaster, YHM, DPMS
Midway lists Olympic and Bushmaster.
Those are only the people I had in my favorites list from when I looked a couple weeks ago.
I guess the better question I'm trying unsucessfully to ask is:
Should one get both an AK and an AR or just get multiple caliber uppers for the AR platform?
or... who really cares, get what you want, etc, et al.
"I was just thinking about plinking ammo and 7.62x39 seems to be cheaper, et al and etc."
The 7.62 x 39 uppers aren't cheap. You could probably get an AK for less than what you would pay for an upper.
I'm not good when it comes to that type of math. I usually spend the money and then justify it afterwords.
Anyway- Have Fun.

If You want to shoot cheap as much as I hate to say it go Ak. cheap 7.62 = ball powder, Laquered cases, corosive primers, and so on = Ar-15 No worky. = very expensive club.

is the objective to get something to come out of the end of the barrel, or to be able to actually hit something. if the former, then ak. if the latter, then ar.

oh, you'll hit something! [ROFL2] It's choosing what you're going to hit that's the tricky part [LOL]
and inside of 100 yards, either will get the job done just fine- if you like 7.62x39 ballistics, and will use domestic ammo (or reload for accuracy), then an AR will be more accurate- but shooting cheap ammo will make the AR a club much sooner than an AK.. and you'll lose much of the difference in accuracy.. I agree you can generally get a cheap AK or SKS for less than an AR upper-
the con is you've now got another rifle to haul around- the pro is, you've now got another rifle in case something happens to the AR... I lulled the same question over, and came to the conclusion that AKs come in configurations that are just not possible for the AR (folding stocks, pistols without a pipe coming out the back, etc), so try those out to see if they're to your liking...

A while back there was a 7.62x39 upper at Gun Smoke. I don't remember the details, but it had been there like a year. Maybe it's still there.

I saw one over the weekend at the RK show here in Denver; a vendor I know had one or two. I've thought about getting one myself, and/or a 5.45 x 39, but haven't convinced myself quite yet. I think Model 1 sales does both, in addition to the others mentioned.
One thing that comes to mind is that the bolts have a tendency to crack around the lugs due to the thin wall when you open up the Diameter. Check with AR performance in Pueblo. He makes a 7.62 X39 upper and machines his own bolts to improve the geometry an reduces the cracking.

I'm shooting an AR 15 by Armalite with a 7.62 x 39 Armalite upper, check their web site. 1.5" at 150 yards. to get that the ammo is not just for plinking, about 0.60 cents per round but hoping to get this 30 caliber to shoot that at 200 yards and it will be cheaper than the 7.62 x 51

This is an old thread, but if you're going to get an upper for plinking, get a .22 or 5.45x39. 5.45 is wayyy cheaper than 7.62x39, more accurate and similar recoil to 5.56. And yeah I'm selling one. :)

It may be an old thread but new info is good too. I know this does not always work out, but I bought mine NEW off Gunbroker. It was a dealer out of Minnesota I believe. He builds them. If you want to contact him directly I could supply his email. I had one on order from Del-Ton but the lack of a delivery date cause me to cancel. About $450. I got it dialed in last Saturday and, woo, this thing is sweet. It is a dpms barrel with bushy components. Bought a case of ammo off AIM for something like .18 cents a round ($182 for 1020, or something like that) brass casing. I was picking off used casings on top of our target board at 100 yds.

Oh, I put a UTG bipod on it as well, their op-1 clears the crazy long clip. I have 10 rounders too. I only bought the upper. I put together the lower with a SAA lower, del-ton LPK and my old A2 stock.
Edit: Just got the rounds from UPS. $182 for 1120 rds. 16.25 cents each. Brass casing, sealed tin, WITH the wood ammo box. How freakin cool is that!

Very cool rifle, I also love the yugo m67 ammo, how much was shipping on that crate from aim?
I would vote for a dedicated AK-47 as they are just a fun gun to shoot in their own way. You can get 75 round drums cheap and the old AK is just a time and battle proven rifle in it's own right.
The AK-47 to the AR-15 is the old reliable revolver to the HK pistol, both are fun but different.

Go separate rifles. The ar wasn't made to really work with the ak ammo.

Man, if you want cheaper ammo - build ar in 5.45 - it cost half of what any 5.56 or 7.62..

I had some other things shipped with it, separate box. Shipping was $40 for all. I just got another crate by itself (7.62X54R, about the same weight) and that was $32.

Yes mike at arms of america is a pretty good guy, when you call him up ask if he'll give you a cash discount ;) he let me have the cases for 225 out the door since I paid cash, but I also bought 4 cases at the same time. Also aoa is planning to get into the ar world like every other company, I'll be curious to see what they come out with.
