Wow. Those 2 pilots are living right.
Wow. Those 2 pilots are living right.
Yep, no injuries or fatalities. The pilot was alone on the Key Lime plane, and he sounded unphased in the ATC audio. 2 people in the red plane, both walked away after they landed by parachute.

Here's a good aviator forum talking about this crash.
https://www.pprune.org/rumours-news/640394-mid-air-us.html
Looks bad on Centennial Airport, and the Air Traffic Controllers, from my perspective.
I'm going to start a new thread on this, because I don't think it belongs in this thread.
I'm betting bricks were shat in that little red plane.....
I was in the Wings over the Rockies museum a few years ago in the ejection seat room. Started talking to a guy who had Parachute landed in a Cirrus with his wife after an inflight emergency (can't remember what happened), He had pictures on his I phone and was eager to share.
After they landed, the wind grabbed the chute and tumbled the plane around for a while. Not sure if they have a cut-off to release the chute but this guy wasn't aware of one. But they did survive.
Ok, not airplanes but they do fly, so to avoid another thread...
Drove to Alamosa on Saturday to watch some of the National Association of Rockery's (https://www.nar.org/) annual National Sport Launch (https://www.nar.org/site/nsl-2021/) (this year, AKA "Spudnik (https://www.nar.org/events/national-sport-launch-spudnik-2021/)" as an homage to the potato farming in the area). I understand they had clearance up to 30,000 feet.
Everything from small Estes kits to, let's call 'em BFRs.
Growing up I did Estes rockets, but I didn't do kits. I always liked designing and building my own. My most complex rocket was a 2 stage with a 3 engine booster which recovered under parachute (as well as the upper stage, of course).
Engines are lettered depending on total impulse. Common small model rocket engines are A, B and C. Estes came out with a D engine shortly before I got out of rocketry. I believe I heard that there were some O engines on site for this launch event.
To give you an idea of the size of some of the rockets:
86355
This was a prototype engine launch from one of the far pads:
86356
This was a mid-sized (probably 3-4 feet tall) rocket launch from one of the near pads:

Looked like everyone was having a good time. I take it back, not everyone...

Lots of nerdy kids running around. Took me back... :)

In the 70’s, rocket geeks were always kind of weird cool! Did a few builds and street launches but never got into it this far!
It looks like a great time!
Cool video. The first few minutes area a bit dry, but after that it is pretty good.

No pic, I was not fast enough. But this morning I saw a C130 taxiing between A and B terminals in Denver.
Dark green camo, somewhat shabby looking. Roundel was red center with blue outside, no white at all.
No obvious stenciling on the part that I could see.

Military aircraft from all branches fly over Colorado all the time. A couple of years ago my older son snapped this pic when his Blackhawk set down to refuel and the crew grabbed lunch.

I took this picture the other day down near Yuma. But then I drove a few blocks down and passed the Pima Air and Space museum which is a WAY cooler site with all kinds of awesome stuff. Interesting enough to just look up on Google Earth and take a browse through the inventory. I'm especially interested in the plane that looks to be the size of a blue whale.

What I love about pictures like these, is just imagine how much money is out in that field, decaying.
Each one of those are millions of dollars, and here I am, doing what I do, and maybe I will do a "big deal," but it will never equal the price of even one of those airplanes.
And there are hundreds of those airplanes...
There is always a bigger fish...
Man, the Stratotanker is 64 years old, I'd never have guessed.
Great place to take a tour. Went some 20 years ago. Very cool!

I've always wondered, can you get to the cockpit from the back, or are you stuck in the back for the entire ride?

Not a picture of a plane but close, looks like a Spitfire Rolls Royce engine mounted on a sleek boat, called a "Water-Slider".
Picture was taken on the Seine river in Paris, 1948. This thing would have made one hell of a racket!

Too bad you didn't go in Stu. Theres so much to see... ive spent days there. Most of the volunteers are veterans & have amazing stories too.
I didn't have time. I mean, I guess I did, but I wanted to leave as soon as possible.
I was 12 when we moved to Tucson. Spent a lot of time at DM with my dad watching the U2s do “touch & go” and going to every air show during my time there. Later on we watched the A10s. Spent lots of time at the boneyard and the Pima Air Museum as well the silo museum.

Man, if you haven't visited the National Museum of WWII Aviation at the Colorado Springs Airport, DO SO! I've known there was a museum there for years, but never went until last weekend when the B-29 Fifi was at the airport.
Holy shit, what a cool museum with some KILLER airplanes! They have an F7F Tigercat that's just about the sexiest damn warbird I've ever seen. And lots of other great planess. And best of all, most of them aren't roped off, you can walk right up to them. And they told me that ALL of their planes are airworthy and get flown when they can. Go check it out!
I'm shocked I never posted any photos of the CAF Warbird airshow I went to a couple years ago.

At some point I'll have to go back to visit the museum. I imagine everything of note was outside, as there were dozens of aircraft on the tarmac, and many vehicles, including Jeeps, Halftracks, tanks and a couple live artillery pieces they started the show off with.

Not sure how well this turned out. At the Las Vegas vegas speedway bull ring. F22s, F16s & A10s practicing fly overs of thee big track.
Nellis AFB I believe just east of the tracks. Thought I saw the Thunderbirds practicing when I drove past on I15.
Went to the Vegas Speedway a few years ago for the Red Bull Air Race finals which were cancelled because of high winds (Big yellow inflatable pylons kept collapsing).
Great time either way, first time there. Big facility and like you said, Nellis AFB is right over 'there'. Fun place with lots of stuff to do but Vegas is pretty much Butt Ugly in the daytime.

The camera in my phone is garbage so its hard to see but I'm pretty sure I saw a C5 on Saturday over east Colorado Springs. Might not be very interesting to some but it was new to me to see in the sky. Wish Id taken the picture when it was banking instead of staring at it trying to figure out what it was though.
Every time I'm visiting around San Antonio, it's real cool to see those flying around.
Biggest thing I've ever seen flying was the Antonov

Getting my nerd on.... like to monitor air traffic locally. The tracker setup is a raspberry pi 4 running piaware, connected to an SDR using a 26in 1090mhz ads-b antenna. Fabricated an outdoor box to house everything & the antenna is about 20' up. Feeding flightaware, adsbx, and flight radar24. Tried feeding plane finder, but their software sucked and kept crashing my sdr. Currently ranked around 5800 for contributors out of 32,000 ish, worldwide. Id like to get the antenna higher & then the score would be better. Still fiddling with the project.
Can see traffic as far as Cheyenne & Pueblo on most days, even farther to the west though the range doesnt extend as far east (respectively) because of the large trees & tall building adjacent to/on the east side of my property.
Haven't looked through the individual records to confirm that was infact a C5 yet but Im pretty sure. Unfortunately Military planes dont have much info associated with them in the logs.
Evidently, I like planes & tracking them more than I ever realized, or was willing to admit until now.

It might be a C-17 with the winglet wing tips. Real workhorse during the Kabul fiasco.
I was tracking the 'FR 24' app and watching the air traffic for several days. Lots of USAF and reserve aircraft. That was the only time I have seen them recognize and describe a US military aircraft.
You could track the re-fuelers and recon aircraft circling areas around the base and a few MiL-24 copters wondering around.
Very cool tracking hardware out there.

That was a really nice way of saying I was mistaken. Thank you : )
Ive been spending more time around bases so I get excited by everything & am still learning to identify. Wearing my glasses & having a decent camera would've helped. That sucker seemed huge.
C17 makes more sense around here. There was something flying around in the logs with a call sign associated with the airlift command with the call sign 'Reach' so there's some info available if I dig around.

Inspecting my landing gear above Frederick last weekend. 😀. Sorry it?s rotated a bit.
I was going to say C17 based on the size of the tail relative to the rest of the aircraft. See quite a few C17s and some C5s here going into JBLM. A few have been quite low and loud heading north over the house to circle back for a southern approach into the airfield.
Don't see many fighters though. Did see parts of an airshow at work in Tacoma this past summer. Seeing and hearing a F22 hauling ass banked over and pulling hard left over Commencement Bay was awesome. Set off car alarms all over the place.
CNs station sounds really interesting, but much of that description went right over my head.

Some trivia-at one point the AZ Air National Guard was referred to as "Old Gun", take off on Top Gun, due to the experience of the majority of the pilots. Smithsonian's flight magazine even did an article about it (can't remember the name but maybe "Air and Space"?). When we first moved to Tucson my dad used to take me out to an area where we just outside the fence to watch takeoffs and landings sitting in our Pontiac Catalina convertible. Great memories for sure. The first air show I ever went to was that first year, pretty cool for a 12 yr old. Got to go through a B17, need to see if I can find those photos.

A little Bondo and some of that TV rubber super-spray, good as new!
Early Radio-Plane Target Drone pictures.
I'm guessing these were taken in the late 50's or early 60's. The Radio-Plane Target drones were used from WW2 and into the 1960's. Many versions had parachutes installed, to salvage the drone for re-use if it wasn't shot down at the end of its flight.
One of the pictures shows two Airmen standing by a wrecked drone, notice the 2 aircraft tail turrets behind them. Looks like Boeing B-47 radar controlled twin 20MM guns! 8990489905

Can't remember if I've posted this here before, but this is what our grandson works on in the Navy, an E6-B Mercury - the "Doomsday Plane". Refurbed and modified Boeing 707's. Primary mission is to be a comm link between submerged nuke subs and land. There's a 5 mile long cable antenna that trails out behind the plane, and a shorter one too. Cody's job is to operate the cable reels & winches, he's also the cook for the 18-man crew.
But these planes also have the capability to launch nuke missiles from land missile sites, as a last-ditch measure if land launch centers were somehow disabled. Extremely low chance of that ever happening, but there it is.

I usually only admire the pics in this thread but ^^^that is pretty damn cool all around.

The B-29 was giving rides too, all booked up, $400.00 to $1400.00 per seat.
We spent $99.00 for seats on the Beech, you could spend $200.00 and sit in the co-pilots seat, our flight had a 14yr old with 40hrs flying time as co-pilot. Total of 6 people on board.
90324
We skydived out of a Beech D-18 Twin once back in 1980. Was a cool jump, but we all had to crowd forward so the anemic old toad could get airborne.

On this date in 1963, Lockheed test pilot Tony LeVier, took a TF-104 from California to Maryland (with fuel stops) in the company's aircraft with 18 yr old Daughter, and co-pilot, Tonianne.
She was able to fly the plane at Mach 2, I doubt this kind of thing could happen today. Good for her!!

B-29 ?
That's it, yes! Long before we had the B1 Bomber, we had the B29.
Such a pretty bird.

I wish I'd known about those arrows when I still had my plane. That would have been an interesting day's flight.
Cool, I'll forward this to my boss who still has a plane. Alpha2, if he wants to make this a day's flight, I'll let you know.

This is a nice site of old, abandoned and 'gone' airports in the Denver area. Great history.

If either of us live long enough for me to finish installing all the new radios in my Glasair, I'd be happy to go for a ride with you! Too many other things keep getting in the way and the project gets pushed aside.
Some friends and I went up last Monday to take a look at the Aspens. We went from Brighton to Steamboat and then to Craig, Hayden, and Walden before heading home. This pic was taken by a friend's wife from their RV-6. I'm in the RV-3 and the polished plane is a 1948 Swift. (I know Alpha2 probably knows all this, but for anybody else who might be curious...).
The aspens were nice and the weather was fantastic.

I’ve had the red three for just a bit over 4 years. Best plane I’ve ever owned.
I’ve ridden in that Swift. It’s similar in size to a Cessna 150.

U-2 cockpit photograph checking out the first Chinese Balloon. Great picture, just wonder if it's real, note the shadow of the U-2 on the balloon!
So the black things are solar panels?
Obviously made for long term endurance?
-John
The picture was taken from a press release today. I had heard that they sent a U-2 up to check the thing out. It would be great to see some data like Altitude, Time and Airspeed. Nice picture!
It looks like we can see the curvature of the earth in the picture, so yeah, cool picture, but also scary, when you realize those are likely huge solar panels, under a huge balloon, supporting xyz payload.
It would be nice to identify the shoreline at the top of the picture.
Also, from what I understand, the U-2 is a handful at altitude, banking and turns are very slow. It's very interesting 'they' are still keeping a/the U-2 on-call! I like it.

The seven-bladed props make it a J or later, if memory serves.

It is a 1994 H3 model. They used to have four silver aluminum blades and the J Models (they came out in 1996) have 6 blades. The very first A models and a few Bs had 3 bladed props. I have never seen a 3 blade prop in person.
These NP-2000 props have 8 blades and are friggin awesome. Between the new props and new Rolls Royce engine upgrades, it is a total sportscar.
You wont see any more of the older 4 blade hurks anymore. The props got old and started having issues like blades coming off inflight. That is not good.

My grandson's in the Navy, stationed at Tinker AFB in OKC, in an E6-B Mercury squadron, tired old Boeing 707's. He says he's hearing rumors of those being replaced with C-130's, hopefully they'd be the latest and greatest versions.
94780
I imagine they have regular parts runs to Davis-Monthan to keep a 707 in the air.
Grandson was originally supposed to go to an Osprey squadron to do carrier onboard delivery duty, but they didn't have enough planes, so they sent him to the Mercury's. We feel much better about those than the Osprey's.
My brother-in-law went to Reno. Air races last weekend, left about a half hour before the T-6’s crashed.

Man that brings back a lot of memories of FR primer and dinol for sheetmetal repair. While I am happy for my time in heavy maintenance overhaul on airliners, I am also happy I don?t do that anymore. Doing Section 141 repairs on B747?s was an amazing amount of work.
