View Full Version : Airplane Pics
There is only a few things better than going to an Airshow. One of them is being the airshow.
Us going through a canyon near the 2002 Hayman burn area. Big plane at 230-250 mph, big rocks, big pucker factor.

Very cool! We dirtbike back in there and are always seeing low level 130's having fun, maybe one of them was you.
Flying noe is one my favorite things to do! Thanks for the pics, it made this desk a bit more exciting!
I saw 3 C-130s drop into South Park about 3 months ago - it was a very clear day & it was cool to see them doing their low level from the top of Kenosha Pass -
Awesome pictures, going to send them to my aunt who was an air-medevac nurse on the Hurc.
Is that plane with the #2 on it the only one with those markings? If so, I've seen it low and slow over Pueblo West before.
H.
Why the orange #2 on the last pict?
Great photos! Were those taken from another plane, or from on the ground somewhere?
And for all you pilots, I've always wondered.....do large planes like that lose lift and altitude in steep banks like that? There's a video of a B-52 crashing while in a really steep banking turn, and it looks like it just fell outta the sky. Seems like the lift under the wings holds 'em up, and when the wings are turned sideways the lift would either go away or change direction, or something. I don't understand what holds 'em up.

We have four planes set up for firefighting as slurry bombers. The Forest Service gave us tanker numbers 2 and 5. So you will see 2 and 5 flying around quite a bit. After November we take the numbers off until April when the fire season starts up again. They are just giant stickers.

They were taken from the ground near Cheeseman reservoir.
As long as you are going fast, planes dont care which way is up/down. Low and slow is no time to be doing steep turns.
That B-52 crash up at Fairchild was pure pilot error. That crash changed US Military avaition bigtime. The pilot had a "history" of being stupid. Look up Darker Shades of Blue.
Awesome pictures Hoser. Do you think the passengers would mind if I tried that with an A320?

Thank you for sharing those pics. Absolutely awesome training you guys are doing. (of course, I'd poop my pants if you low-leveled like that over me. I might have had my career in the USAF, but I was a ground troop the whole time [discounting the times I went out with the Army in UH-1's and UH-60A's - I prefer to fly in rotor wing craft.])

Freakin' awesome!
Living up in Bailey I'm very thankful for what you guys do. In the summer when it's hot & dry it's very reassuring every time I see #2 or #5 fly over the house. Sometimes, when you guys fly up Platte Canyon from Bailey towards Grant, I get to look at you from above!
And, one of my Terriers enjoys the hell outta chasing the planes when they come over.
Everybody wins.

...it's not a fixed wing aircraft but a good pict nonetheless. My team and I heading out on a raid on a AH-6 Littlebird (I love riding the skids!!!)...
Taken in Iraq at Baghdad International Airport in '03 just after we cleared it. There is a fixed wing C-17 in the background on the right. 1st one to land in Iraq!

Here is one of the cooler aircraft I have gotten to fly. Even if it was only for about 10min. Brand new, owned by Bell. $8mil+ depending on load out. I would have smiled, but didnt think i was actually in the picture. This is what Trump gets to play in.

I worked on B52, KC135 and C130s during Vietnam. I have more pictures but I am limited by the size so I can only post a few. I only got to fly on KC135s and C130s. I was removed from flying status before I got to fly on a BUFF. The #4 picture is a Buff taking on fuel from a KC135.

It was a busy day at the bombing range and drop zone a few days ago.
We had C-130s doing airdrops, F-16 dropping bombs and shooting things, EOD blowing things up, C-130s getting shot at with smoky sams and radar missiles.
Here is what flares (missile decoys) look like from the ground.

A picture of an airplane my late father and a friend owned about 1960.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a1/dklistul/Airplanes/IM_A0038.jpg
Let's see if someone can identify this. Google can give you the answer but please don't cheat.
They also owned a Cessna Airmaster together. Not sure if it was the 145 or 165.
Both of these airplanes are very rare today and would be worth a small fortune but back then, they were just old airplanes that weren't worth much. Dad and Lloyd sold them long before I was old enough to remember them, so the picture dates to about 1960 or so.

Maybe I should start a post to list the aircraft we (forum members) jumped out of.
Define "jumped"
I jumped, scrambled, and crawled out and away from this one.
Short version- I lost power and hit a telephone line on landing.
Long version- I lost power down to about 1100 rpm. I was over trees. I found at that rpm I could hold about 40 foot above the trees in ground effect. I knew I was only about 3 or 4 miles from open farm land so I kept going. About the time I cleared the trees to a nice open freshly harvested field the engine quit. I looked for power/telephone poles but didn't see any. I hit a telephone cable about 25 feet off the ground. It broke at the left main landing gear leg and wrapped around the right leg. It stalled me so I hit kinda nose down and slid until the cable got tight and flipped me up side down. I hung from the seat belt letting my head clear from the whack it took hitting the instrument panel. That is until I heard the whoosh of the gasoline as it ignited. At that time I released the seat belt, kicked the door open, and did the jump, scramble, and crawl thing. I was told latter that I kicked the door completely off and it was about 50 feet from the airplane.
I went back a couple weeks later. The telephone line branched off at 90 degrees to a main line I had been traveling parallel to. I counted out 100 paces from the main line to the first pole on the line I hit. The line was a 1 inch thick cable. I think if it had been just a couple wire I likely would have landed OK.
This is a picture from about 2 weeks earlier. It happened in the fall of 1975.
Looking back...

They're cool, have long range and go fast, but they can't carry shit and there's that whole crashing thing. I'd rather be in a 53
The only time I've been in one was on the ground. Neat looking animal.... I watched a CSAR team demo from an Osprey that was sitting about 60 ft in the air, then it came back and landed after the demo was complete. Really fun to watch, but after some of the stories I've heard.... No thanks! One of my friend's dad worked somewhere along the line in the engineering and development stage and after some of the things he told me, there is NFW I would fly in one.

Quib, as always, your photography is beautiful.
Thank you. :)

He will probably be at Oshkosh, and might also make the trip down to Sun N Fun. Some other very experienced builders think he has a good chance of winning some awards at Oshkosh. I PM'd you the link to the build pics so you can see a bit more.

Quib, you should make a trip to The Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, in Rhinebeck, NY! Very much like this Shuttleworth collection, only here in the US. Then wander over to Geneseo while you're there. There's some very cool old planes in Rhinebeck, but not as many of them are flyers. http://www.oldrhinebeck.org/

You should research The Champlin Fighter Museum, which was an awesome private collection of WWI & WWII warbirds in Mesa, AZ. It's closed now, and I think the planes all went to a museum in Seattle. But some beautiful airplanes! I'm not sure how rare the FW-190D-12, with a V12 engine is, but they had one.
I've got to see these someday, because the man that built the collection, Doug Champlin, was from my hometown in Enid, OK. He was a multimillionaire, an heir of the Champlin Petroleum Co. When I was a teenager, I used to ride my Honda out to his hanger at the airport to drool over his Wildcat and Corsair, they let people come in freely. He also revived the manufacturing of Great Lakes high performance biplanes, don't know if those are still being made, but they were very cool, and I could roam the hangar where they were made. I actually remember the fuselage of that Focke-Wulf sitting outside on one side of the hangar, and someone telling me how rare it was because it was a V12 and not a radial.
Doug also founded Champlin Firearms, who builds high-end custom rifles and shotguns. They're still in business at the Enid airport. I also used to hang around the gun shop when I was 14-15, and they were all very good to me. Showed me every step they did to build 5-digit custom firearms, some incredible guns. Mostly big game safari rifles and awesome trap/skeet shotguns.
But that warbird collection, it's unreal.
Cool childhood memories, Rondog!
If you can deal with the crowd and the aviation overload there is always the EAA convention at Oshkosh. More Warbirds, Antiques, and Classics flying there than anywhere else in the world. At least during the convention.
Here, I found some old photos of that Focke-Wulf FW-190D-13.....like I said, last time I saw it in person it was just a fuselage laying in the dirt next to a hangar. Notice it has exhaust stacks for a V12, not a radial. I hear this was known as the "Dora" model, the "long-nosed Dora" is what I was told.

The first pic is of WB-57 (http://jsc-aircraft-ops.jsc.nasa.gov/wb57/index.html). One of two NASA owns for High Altitude Research. For the Return to Flight Space Shuttle Mission after the Columbia Tragedy, this plane was flying at 65,000' or so taking video of the Shuttle to monitor for debris. This is in the hanger where the last Shuttle Crew did their press conference upon to return to JSC. This pic was taken the same day as that press conference. I was down there flying on the Reduced Gravity Plane with the NASA Education Program. The second pic is of the Zero G Corporation place that we flew on. And yes Reduced Gravity is pretty awesome.

Any recommendations to get a foot in the door. We are moving to Cheyenne as soon as our house sells so we were going to check with the BLM office up there. I have a T1 PIO friend so we may try that avenue but we were also thinking something alone the time or documentation route, although a buying team would be excellent too. Thanks in advance for the help.
