So I live outside city limits and have a ditch then pasture behind my house, but I have some neighbors that are strange so I dont know their take on shooting. I have a squirrel problem, he keeps tearing up my lawn chair padding then he stares at me when I watch him like he's saying screw you! So last week I chased him off with my sons BB pistol that was on the counter but he keeps coming back. So today I sighted in a 22 rifle I picked up from another board member with sub sonic CCI ammo just for my squirrel friend. Then I found a box of 60gr "Sniper subsonic" from Aguila I had in my closet (never tried it) and I thought man that will be better then the 26gr I was useing. So I loaded 1 round sat at the kitchen table with the back door open and steadied my rifle on the back of a chair like I had done before and BANG!!! It sounded like I shot my AR in the kitchen [ROFL1] Good thing the wife is at work. So that ended my backyard target practice, at least until my ears quit ringing!

I'm not going to start preaching on firearms and ear protection but ear damage is irreversible !! [Luck]
I recently tried some subsonics (Remington) and I didn't think they were very quiet either.
So that ended my backyard target practice, at least until I get a can!

I am working on the can! The sub sonic I usually shoot is very quiet. I assumed this would be also.
Probably seems a lot quieter when you're not shooting from inside a box too.

Subsonic ammo is quieter than normal ammo, but sitting in an enclosed area you still get the effects of the powder burn. The main benefit to subsonic ammo is the lack of the "crack" from the bullet.

Shoot! I'd get one of those Gamo air rifles that shoot .177 or .22 calibre pellets at 1,400 fps. That will take care of the little rat with a furry tail.
A friend has one and has been taking care of his squirrel problem quietly, doing much the same as you: sniping from inside the kitchen. The only problem he has is, the furry bodies falling into the neighbors yard and piling up. He has to sneak over and get the body!

When Shootin' Den went out of business here in Colo Spr last year a buddy and I went to the liquidation auction. He picked up a .177 pump pellet rifle for just this reason - to irradicate nusiance squirrels from his yard without alerting the neighbors (he lives within the city limits of Colo Spr (I know; I know.. .rules is rules and all such). The first night he went home and gave the rifle a test fire in his backyard (it was about 1 in the morning). He reported to me the next day that the rifle sounded like a cannon had gone off in the quiet 1AM hours. He decided that he'd never try that again.
Our kitchen window faces the front yard, and our finch feeders are in the tree in the front yard. The squirrels like to chew the feeders up, so I bought a Daisy Powerline 880 at WalMart for cheap. It does a number on the furballs, but the last time I shot one, I looked out the window and the neighbor was in his driveway looking around wondering what the POP was.
I'm sure he saw the skwerl flopping around under our tree, but he never said anything. I doubt he'd really care, he wants to go shooting anyway. He's a young Czech, only fired a rifle in the Army, and is fascinated with the American gun culture.
The Gamo Whisper is a suppressed pellet gun with no NFA tax stamp required.
So that's what your doing with the .22lr Haha ok. It's yours now.

I am putting it to use until I have to give it to my nephew. My son has the WIN 22 but its to short for me to use so I thought I would "test" this out before I hand it over. I really like the CCI SS ammo, nice and quiet and pretty accurate.
But ya I may keep this one and get him another!

Sub-sonic ammo: The bullet is traveling slower then the speed of sound, but the gasses escaping behing it are not----> boom.
Pellet rifle shooting 1400 fps: The pellet is traveling faster than the speed of sound----> crack.
Pellet rifle shooting 900 fps: pellet traveling slower than the speed of sound, gasses behind it are also----> dead squirrel, ppppsssssshhhh.

Eh... knowledge doesn't nessecarily translate into physical property in this instance.

I had a similar problem while living in Louisiana with Armadillos rooting up my lawn... With the appropriate equipment and a couple of squirts of hand cleaner down the muzzle (running the can "wet"), I was able to resolve the issue without any apparent ire from the neighbors...

You just don't know how to it properly,,,

If my neighbors saw me with a can it would be a damn level 5, all agents please respond emergency
I hate my neighbors....[Rant1]
I use one of those cheapo chinese spring piston air rifles in .177.... right at 1000 fps over the chrono, which leaves 'em sub sonic, and sounds like a hand staple gun....the only problem is squirrel cadavers winding up on the wrong side of the fence....

Check out the Aguila Colibri 22lr ammo. Primer only, so short range, but my wife shoots it out of her revolver, and it's much quieter than anything else except cans or airguns. Surprising how quiet it actually is.

That's a good thought. I've shot the colibri out of my Remington 541X in my garage, and nobody heard a thing. You just have to get familiar with the ballistics, or shoot close. But a fence picket will stop them. So put a bait station down low on the fence. This would also allow you to shoot indoors, I think, as the colibri is just a heavily primed round, no powder and definately subsonic. No boom, no crack, just a furry little body in the yard.
What did you say?
The oilfield did a pretty good job on my hearing.
For those of you with air rifles, My Crosman Titan GP is louder than my Marlin .22!

The furry little bastages LOVE peanut butter. They kept runnig off with or chewing apart my homemade outdoor ant poison traps (apparently, a little boric acid doesn't hurt squirrels which leads me to believe that they might actually be looking to take over the world due to their resistance to poisons).

my co2 bb pistol does a fine job on rodents also. you could try some 22lr snake shot
I once killed a mouse with a blow dart gun, but it took a few shots and he had no where to run.
