Here's a couple people who thought it was a bright idea cruise their Vette Z06 and their motorcycle up to the Eisenhower Tunnel. WTF...snow storm so I think I'll test my 500hp rear wheel drive Vette in the snow!!

Hey, the Vette has traction control....

The guy on the ST1100 is HARDCORE (idiot). It's entirely possible he's a customer of mine. [LOL]

It's possible. Before I picked my jeep up I used my GTO to get around one winter and like the Vette there it has a little something poopra owners don't know about - torque. Now taking it through the snow to Eisenhower would be nucking futs.

You may laugh, The best "snow go'er" I had was my '75 Camaro. The thing was so heavy, it would just crush its way through anything up to and including, 2'..

I can see that, that car was a tank I'm sure. Still no way in hell I'd travel into the mountains with a Vette or other rear wheel drive car with lots of HP and no weight.

Nah, some other guy. Probably from Honda Tech.

A buddy of mine in high school had a 63 Impala 4 door with the 3 on the tree and straight 6.
We called it the "Black Bitch" and that car would go places a 4x4 would drop its ball bearings. I mean it was a fricking tank, we even crossed the Platte river down by 470 in it. It reminded me of the Lincoln in "Animal House". My sister had a 65 Bug that was impressive in the snow as well.

As far as bikes in the snow I used to see quite a few when I was out in a plow. Some hardcore dudes to be sure.
The ones that always crack me up are the wetbacks in their "Tejano" cruiser F150's. Those low profile wiiiide tires really work well in the snow eh? Just love watching them putt along at 5 mph and the ass end all over the place!

Crazy pics. My Son will most likely be delayed he's on his way home from Grand Junction.

Oh yeah any high HP RWD car is as good as the tire you chose.

Blizzack WS 50's on my Firebird and I seen many a 4x4 sliding around. More than I was anyway.

Ahh those were the days. [ROFL1]

Now we own nothing but 4x4's lol.

I used to drive 608 bhp rwd BMW through 2 winters. Big turbo, long lag etc.
Maybe I got used to it, but I do not see what is so difficult with rwd in snow. More power in general makes things easier, not more difficult.

I think it has a lot more to do with familiarity with your car than the actual car itself. I've always driven crappy cars (cause it's all I can afford at the moment) but I've never gotten stuck, or went sliding uncontrolably, or what have you. I have had to dodge other stupid drivers in big trucks and whatnot before though. And I've lived in some serious snow in the past.

I can agree with you. I almost never use my 4wd in my cummins with lots of goodies, it does weigh almost 4 tons though. It's just that people dont know how to drive in the snow and if they have a ton of power they usually mash the pedal and go nowhere.

Good tires, especially SNOW tires, will help just about any car get through the winter. And no, all-seasons don't count. Most all-seasons loose a good percentage of their normal traction below 45deg. The rubber compound just gets too hard. Real snow tires stay soft and many even have silica grains in the rubber that actually give it more "bite". 4x4, RWD, AWD or FWD, it doesn't matter how many wheels are getting power or how much power they are getting if your tires can't grip.

Years ago, a friend, who had money, would buy a brand new set of bridgestone blizzaks for his mitshubishi eclipse turbo (AWD) and we would go out drifting corners in it around various parts of the metro area.

Also drove many of his SAAB 900's from Denver to Vail, stop at IHOP, drink some hot chocolate and make the run back to Denver. (Just for fun, in any weather.)

My best RWD was my 70 Grand Prix. Never had an issue. Now that I have my 06 Grand Prix and after driving it last winter for the first time I do have to say that the combination of Traction control, selective ABS and a modern set of snow tires made the Dodge 4X4 sit most of the winter.

In the old days we learned what the car would and would not do. I have to say that anyone that gets into a wreck with something like that (the 06) is totally stupid. It is so hard to screw up in the 06 it is not even funny. I turn the TC most of the time in the snow just to have a little fun.

Piece of cake. My last year with the 70 Grand prix was 96-97 or so. We had two years there when we had that late (April 19-21 as I remember) snow that dumped on the springs. The first year I made it 1/2 block away from my place on the west side and had to park when the car became a snow plow.

Next year was the same thing only I had a Sunbird FWD and got to the exact same spot.

And being old fashioned I like my RWD cars with a limited slip please. I know some get into trouble but I want both wheels please. My 70 GP had a LS diff as have all my RWD cars.

Irving
10-26-2010, 20:48
Yeah, I have a limited slip on my current FWD car and I love it. I remember driving my little brother to school in my dad's Lincoln Mark VII on I-70. Every time I'd go over an over pass, the car would jerk and threaten to fish tail on me. Scared the shit out of me.

Screw that. You could almost walk it in that time frame. There was a trucker with no chains on blocking the right lane going up to Eisenhower today and and a cdot person banging on his door as he was pissed off! From the Cotrip.org site:

Statewide, the fine for not chaining up when the chain law is in effect is $500 plus a $157 surcharge.

The fine for not chaining up and subsequently blocking the highway is $1000 plus a $313 surcharge.

I used to drive a '79 Dodge D50 (a Mitsubishi mighty-max with Dodge badges) 2wd, open differential as a delivery driver all winter in Anchorage, AK.. about 20k miles in 8 months. I did learn to drive in Alaska winters, tho

I had 800# of lead pigs in the bed, and studded snow tires all the way around...
never got stuck, even pulled a few cars out of the ditch (had an awesome nylon tow rope, with a lot of stretch to it), I had a minor fender-bender once- was trying to keep momentum up while going thru 18"-24" of snow in the road, and pulled into a driveway that was unexpectedly plowed, but glare ice... slid about 40' into a parked car, barely touched it- but fessed up & paid for repairs.

but it did have it's limitations- there was a "4wd only" sign on hillside (switchbacks going up the mountains at the edge of town), I didn't make it 50ft beyond that sign

preparing the vehicle, and knowing how it reacts, and it's limits are key..

No kidding,,my Powerstroke had no problems,,also had a sleeping bag, food,,full tanks.

Speaking of chains, used to plow McClure Pass. Funniest no shet braindead trucker, from Mississippi. "Chains,we never need chains in Mississippi" me So what are you doing on McClure with the chain law signs up?,,trucker " Well they told me this was a shortcut to New Mexico"

Got him up over the Pass,,didn't have the heart to tell him of the Passes he'd have to go over later. ;)

And if you feel uncertain on snow & ice, try a set of these : http://www.rallirengas.fi/rallirengas-ice-1458013.jpg

Just do not put those under a lifted truck, it is gonna get rolled over on smooth ice ;)

And then there are only few cars actually designed so a man can handle the car when it gets slippery. No wonder, why there are so many Subaru STI“s in Colorado :)

I've had to ride in the snow (not by choice). It's not so bad, unless the pavement freezes, then it massively sucks. Both legs out as outriggers, 10 mph. Or, take the dual sport bike with ice screws in the tires! [Muaha]

I used to ride a Honda XL350 in Alaska, even took it out on frozen lakes at times- they had packed snow on them, and the bike did very well unless you found a patch that was bare ice- since I didn't have said screws...

On a lightweight dual sport, going slow, with legs out, when forced to, maybe. With ice screws in the tires, carefully, maybe. On my Concours, ever, not only no but HELL NO!

At least the vette has four points on the ground. Might not get any traction with what they wear, but it won't fall over. I wouldn't take a vette out in that weather by choice, though.

YES!!!!!! I find that more and more important, the older I get....[ROFL1]

I got a '99 KLR650 after I sold my '98 ZX-9R, but I still wouldn't ride it in the snow. One hard patch, or icy spot is all it takes. I'd love to upgrade from my '02 Connie to a new one, but it won't be happenin' for a while due to my upcoming forced career change.

I'm getting new tires tomorrow. I got over 55,000 miles out of my current ones. That's great, considering I never got more than like 20,000 miles out of any tires back when I was into driving fast (dumb) and being young (dumb).

Current are Firestone Firehawk GT. They are VERY loud. So much so, that I'm scheduled to replace my front wheel bearings, and now believe the noise to just be the tires as they wear.

I for one, question how the hell that bike got *that* far.

I still question how stable you would be on a dual sport. If its a decent amount of fresh snow, you would be fine, no real problems. But any moderatly hard packed crap? I dont think there is anything that's going to keep you in the upright position - unless you drive no faster than jogging speed of course. Not even sure how much ice screws would help. They can dig into ice, but thick enough snowpack.. they would only offer so much unless it was hard frozen.

Hoping to get a 2010 concours around Jan by the way. Hey, it has traction control, I'll be able to go over the pass right? [LOL]

I ride a 09 KLR-650 so I have heavier dual sport experience. And I've been down a lot. Still ride in middle of winter but my chain is about to go so it's truck only for now. Generally I stay away from snow, if only because the only thing worse than snow on packed pavement is snow on top of mud. And I have to ride on that to reach pavement...

Google "elephant ride".

Every year a bunch of idiots (yeah, I include myself in that group) start in Grant and go over Guanella Pass in February (or as far as we can get). You would be amazed at just how much traction is available with ice screws (except on dry pavement). That being said, I wouldn't want to be on a BMW R1200GS (http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/7110381/) or pretty much anything larger than a KLR. [Help]

Rumor has it that on the ice, some people have exceeded 70 mph on the way down from the summit, but I wouldn't know anything about that, nosirree.....[Muaha]
