Dozens of law enforcement officers are on scene after a Weld County deputy and a suspect were shot on Tuesday following a police chase.

Fort Morgan Police say it all began at 9:40 a.m. when a woman reported her black 2006 Nissan Altima stolen. Police put out a "be on the lookout" alert on the vehicle, which was believed to be headed west out of Fort Morgan.
A short time later, Wiggins Police spotted the vehicle at Interstate 76 and Highway 34 where a chase ensued.
9NEWS has a crew at the scene where the chase came to an end, at Coyote and Cedar Lanes in Evans.
Witnesses in Evans say they heard gunfire in their neighborhood and saw a sheet covering what appeared to be the suspect. They say they also saw officers performing CPR on a deputy who was then taken away in an ambulance.
The Colorado State Patrol, Greeley Police Department, Weld County Sheriff's Office and Evan Police Department are on scene.
Authorities are investigating a vehicle in a driveway, but do not have their weapons drawn.
Officials did not release names or conditions.
9NEWS will update this story as more information becomes available.

Officers in Evans today cordoned off the scene of a shootout in which a Weld County Sheriff's deputy and a suspect were both shot following a high-speed chase.
Eric Bellamy/ebellamy@greeleytribune.com

A Weld County Sheriff's deputy was killed and a suspect was wounded in a shootout in Evans this morning following a car chase that at times exceeded 100 miles per hour.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Margie Martinez said the officer chased the suspect on foot and was shot by the suspect. Other officers returned fire and wounded the suspect. Both the wounded deputy and the suspect were taken to North Colorado Medical Center.

The Weld County Coroner's office said the officer died.

The chase began with a report of a robbery in Morgan County, said Greeley Police spokesman Sgt. Joe Tymkowych. Officers from several agencies pursued the suspect as the four-door black Nissan sped through Weld County, at times driving on the wrong side of the road to elude officers in Greeley and Evans. Officers at one point put stop sticks in the road to try to stop the vehicle, which crossed the county line at 10:35 a.m.

With smoke rising from the car, the suspect eventually stopped at 11:02 a.m. in a housing subdivision in the area of Coyote Lane and Cedar Lane, south of 37th Street and 35th Avenue. Tymkowych said it wasn't immediately known whether the suspect had any connection to the subdivision.

At least 25 police cars were on the scene after the shooting, along with an ambulance and a fire truck. Officers had the entire area cordoned off, and neighbors stood on their porches watching.

One woman who saw the chase said she heard about six shots.

Christina Goss, who lives about two houses away from the shooting scene, said she heard sirens and looked outside as the chase ended. She saw a man in a white shirt run from the car and then she heard a shot, with an officer falling to the ground. She said other officers who surrounded the car returned fire, and she heard five or six shots. The suspect then fell.

Goss said another officer covered his fallen comrade with his own body during the shootout until CPR could be started.

A spokesman for the Morgan County Sheriff's department declined to provide any details on how the incident began and referred all questions to Weld County authorities.

Fort Morgan Police Chief Keith Kuretich and Fort Morgan County Undersheriff Dave Martin would not release any information about the events that unfolded in their jurisdictions.

a whole lot of more details, and they differ from other accounts by the same people. some of it is WTF

The injured deputy was identified as Sam Brownlee by the Greeley Tribune. He told the newspaper in April that he had been with the department for five years.

7NEWS has learned the identity of the shooting suspect. He is Rueben Reyes, of Fort Morgan. http://tags.bluekai.com/site/1932

The Brownlee and Reyes were rushed to North Colorado Medical Center after the shooting. The condition of the suspect is not known.

Witnesses Describe Shootout

Sheila White was getting to ready to hang Christmas lights outside her home when she heard a car careening into her Evans neighborhood. She saw the black vehicle turn the corner and noticed that its front tire was flat and it was followed by several police cars with lights flashing and sirens blaring.

The vehicle stopped and the officers yelled several times at the suspect to get out the car, White said.

"They had pulled guns, rifles, everything when they came around the corner and jumped out of their cars," White said. "That scared me so I immediately went back into the house. I didn't want to get hit by stray bullets."

"Immediately, the cops swarmed the car. There's about seven or eight cops all around the car with guns pointed at the driver," said Christina Goss, who lives next door to the shooting scene.

The driver, a young Hispanic man with a bald head, "reached into the back seat and all of sudden we heard gunshots, like five, six gunshots going off," Goss said.

"Someone grabbed the kid, they pulled him from the car…and slammed him down on the street. You could see his head bouncing on the ground," she said, adding that about five officers wrestled the driver to the ground.

"Right next to him was the cop that was shot," Goss said.

She said she saw another deputy used his body to shield the injured deputy's body during the shootout.

"Another officer straddled (the wounded officer), held a gun straight up in the air and fired a shot," she said. "I don't know if this was a signal that one of the officer's was done or what. But four or five more officers came running up."

Several officers took turns doing CPR on the wounded officer, who was bleeding badly, witnesses said.

The driver on the ground appeared unconscious, Goss said.

"They checked the kid that was lying on the ground. They grabbed the sleeve of his jacket and his arm was just limp," Goss said. "He was bald-headed and you could see there was no color in his head. He was lifeless."

After the ambulances transported the officer and suspect, she said, a state trooper who had treated the fallen officer "came into our house and washed the blood off his hands."

Goss said there was a jackknifed silver truck with a trailer at the scene. Two Hispanic girls exited the pickup truck and began crying when they saw the suspect, she said.

“They were just screaming,” Goss said.

"One of the girls that tried to stop everything was crying hysterically," White said.

Chase Exceeded More Than 100 MPH

The incident began as a domestic violence call around 9:40 a.m., said Fort Morgan police Lt. Darin Sagel.

The female victim told police that the suspect fled with her car. Fort Morgan police put out an alert for authorities to be on the lookout for a black 2006 Nissan Altima.

A Wiggins police officer spotted the vehicle on Highway 34, heading towards Greeley, Sagel said.

The Wiggins police officer and a Morgan County sheriff's vehicle chased the car from the west end of county, near County Road 2, to the Weld County border, said Morgan County Sheriff Jim Crone.

Crone explained that the officers continued the pursuit for 35 miles, at speeds exceeding 100 mph, because of "suspicious activity on behalf of the suspect."

He had told his family that he was suicidal and he wasn't going down without a fight, Crone said.

Weld sheriff's deputy was killed with his own gun

Deputy Sam Brownlee, killed in Evans on Tuesday morning by a reputed gang member, was shot three times with his own gun, according to Weld County Sheriff John Cooke.

“After the suspect's car was stopped,” Cooke said Wednesday, “he was removed from the car and there was a struggle. They were wrestling on the ground when the suspect got Sam's gun and shot him three times — twice in the chest and once in the head.”

Just heard about this tonight from my brother, how sad. I'll bet a dime to a dollar that he had a glock in his holster. Suspect was able to take weapon and just pull the trigger to fire.
As to the officer that fired a round off into the air do you think this was a emotional thing? Does seem a little odd but who knows what someone may do in a high stress situation like that. Especially if it were the first time.

Great pics, it was the first Officer Funeral I have ever attended. Very Sad. There was about 200 patrol cars coming out of the south metro area with their lights on.

Indeed about the prior military. I am as well and I get annoyed at the people who don't know how to stand at attention or salute. Some PDs like Denver, Aurora, CSP, are very para-military through their academies so they know how usually

While it is regrettable to ever need to attend such an event, it's absolutely humbling to see the outpouring of love and support from the LEO community at large (nationwide).

While I have my issues with the often inappropriate heavy-handed behavior of the CSPD, I have a great deal of respect for LEO's and the difficult, often dangerous, situations they're put in regularly. Sending off a fallen comrade like Deputy Brownlee in this manner shows such great respect for his service and his ultimate sacrifice. I'm happy that this sort of event doesn't need to occur very often. I just wish we could provide the same sort of tribute to each of our fallen servicemembers

A deflected bullet off his badge? Maybe embroidered badges are in order . . . let the bullet penetrate the cotton to get stopped by kevlar rather than deflect and cause a fatal wound.
