From an email that my wife forwarded....

CAPITALIZATION

Those of us who fall into the world of hi-tech should take note of the importance of correct grammar.
I have noticed that many, who text message & email, have forgotten the "art" of capitalization.
Capitalization is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse.

Not that I know this first hand, but I was told that my uncle didn't need help.

He loved horses. Got off and on all by his self.

The Internet makes us lazy. Google makes us stupid. I don't remember anything anymore. My phone is smarter than me.

Kinda felt sorry for the horse...........

I will agree though and my 19 yo is a prime example. He can't compose a paper to save his keester. Spelling, composition, punctuation and grammer are a foreign concept unless he is composing it on the computer and can hit "spellcheck".
We shant discuss his handwriting skills but man can he text[Rant1]

Dear Lord... one of these days I need to upload some of the papers I've had to grade. The "texting" language is killing English!!! lol. <-- see!

grammar is like politics.

we must strive for middle of the road fairness, but avoid the extremes.

I noticed that grammar and usage has become a lost art in an English class. We had to grade each others short essays. Holy Jesus, I feel bad for anyone who teaches.

I'm not sure if you wrote this intentionally, or if you really do not understand what's wrong with your spelling; therefore, I refuse to comment about it.[BooHoo]

My wife teaches 7th grade history but had to teach an english class this year due to being dual qualified (really the only thing that saved her job). She finally had to buckle down and tell the kids if they write papers like they text she will just toss them in the trash and give them a 0. She brought some of the papers how to show me and I was amazed.

I guess I had it a little tough growing up with both parents being teachers. Now I appreciate it.

Reading facebook and threads on the internet really make you realize that the written word is going to hell, and is pretty sad. I'm an instructional/graphic designer, so that stuff is pretty important to me...

Chatting on a forum versus a formal document are not the same. I can guarantee if I am composing a report for work or any other purpose:
Ie kan spel vary goodly and muh gramer is impeckable.

It's pretty bad when you ask a question, or have something for sale, on a forum and then need to ask the closest teenager to translate a response you got.

Reminds me of a recent conversation with a DISH Network customer service representative. She actually said, "O-M-G" after viewing an error on my account. Kids...

I'm always having to look up the meaning of different acronyms I see on this site. IMHO, and FWIW, I LMAO when I see how often some folks use these acronyms. At least, IIRC.

When people spell out or pronounce things like that, it makes me want to punch them in the face. I hear people try to say "LOL" all the time, and it makes me cringe...

Wouldn't the OP's statement need a comma?

Help your uncle Jack, off a horse.

Help your uncle Jack off a horse.

In the second statement, Jack could be a proper noun for a sick god-damn sex act*, and not necessarily a name of a person.

It's like the following

Let's go eat Grandma.
or
Let's go eat, Grandma.

That picture inspired me to steal a bit from Jack Nicholson...(it's from another board, so the names don't mean anything)

Son, we live in a world that has rules, and those rules have to be enforced by men with grammar guides. Who's gonna do it? You? You, Thrax? I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Easymo, and you curse the grammar "nazis". You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That quoting and correcting grammatical deficiencies, while tragic, probably saved lives. And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that BBS, you need me on that BBS. We use words like misspelling, apostrotastrophe, ellipsabuser. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very grammatical correctness that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a dictionary, and correct some posts. Either way, I don't give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

I was listening to a an NPR show once, and this lady was saying how for the longest time, she thought that "LOL" meant, "Lot's of Love." So for a long time she was signing all her e-mails with "LOL," and she distinctly remembers responding to a lady who recently just lost her mother with an email that went something like, "Sorry to hear about your mother. LOL."

I still laugh when I think about that interview.

I think when people say OMG or LOL out loud, they are trying to be ironic (unless they are like 17 and under). At least I usually am.

"Sorry to hear about your mother. LOL."That actually made me laugh out loud.

For anyone interested, there's a great book called "Eats, Shoots & Leaves."
http://www.amazon.com/Eats-Shoots-Leaves-Tolerance-Punctuation/dp/1592402038/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1291690645&sr=8-1

I did alright in High School. However, I decided joined the infantry. Man... what a way to lose my grammar-fu! I couldn't even spell predicate after I got out.
