View Full Version : How do you deal with depression when you can't go shooting?
Just asking how you deal with the blues?
Running is a great way to have some time with yourself to think about things, then feel great when you're done (after all the pain is drowned out by the endorphines), but I know it isn't for everyone. That includes me, since I haven't gone running in a long time.
I do things like play a video game, smoke a pipe/cigar, and have a Whiskey and Coke (I haven't been able to afford Jack in a very long time).

I shoot in video games. Call of Duty works pretty good.
A little tequila works for me too [Beer]
Yes! I don't have any shooting games for the Wii anymore. Well, not ones where I can kill other people. I miss them. When I play Mario Kart, I scream and swear at the game, and I am NOT one of those people who freaks out over video games.

There is no dealing with it. At home we just walked out the back door and set up some targets. When we got done we grabbed a rod and started fishing. We could shoot our guns and then catch dinner in a very short time. I can't stand paying for these stinking ranges or driving a butt load of miles just to shoot. I miss home so bad. I wish my wife would be willing to move. The land is ours and living would be so cheap. Instead, I pay an ungodly house payment and have to plan a whole day and 100 bucks in gas to shoot my guns!![Rant1][Bang][Rant1]

Find someone to take you shooting. :)
I actually do a lot of reading to help me forget about whatever is stressing me out at the time. I like to immerse myself in someone else's world temporarily so I can get away from my own world. I often read myself to sleep. I have trouble going to sleep at night and would rather spend that time reading than just laying there letting thoughts pile up.
go get a airsoft and chase the neighbors cat around with it, damn now i want to go to walmart and get a airsoft hahahah

How come the van blew away and the little car hardly moved?
Well work has been tough to find. And to prove it I recently got my motorcycle repossessed. The would have got my car but it was blocked in. The bank told me today that I would have until the end of the month to catch up payments before they repoed anything. But that was at 3 today and at 7pm there they were outside. They want my car but I'm not ready to let it go. Its my only form of transportation. Now I'm blue. Whiskey sounds good to me right now.

i fortunately don't have this issue. i shoot about once week if not more! usually it is .22lr small bore practice or high power practice! but i am sorry for ya! when I'm not home and at school and it isn't wed night or fri night when i shoot! i play video games COD black ops and or CODMW2 kind of addicting, but it isn't the same thing compared to the smell of burning gun powder! [Beer]
I miss lasertag. I could play that indoors all day long (even with the cat) but it seems that shooting would bring me distraction but that very same distraction could be what got me in this situation.
I called Prime Source Staffing on Friday and was working by Monday. I know a guy who works there, let me know if you'd like his number. I'm just a temp and not doing anything close to what I thought I'd be doing, but it has gotten me some additional experience and more money than unemployment. We'll see exactly how much when I get paid tomorrow for the first time.
Yea try areotek there a good staffing agency to.

A nice air rifle(s) and good pellet trap in the basement. Print free targets from the internet. A few tubs of pellets and a couple different guns. Practice for that squirrel or crow that shows up in the yard.
Still waiting on snow so I have a good excuse to shoot in the basement.
I also save up reloading projects and wait for the really cold snowy days and start working on them.
I'm going to call it a night. If you can think of anything that you'd like to share I'd be willing to listen. Until then take care and sleep tight.

Big +1. I'm also a musician so I find that when I'm down and out just practicing my axe or listening to some great music really helps me cheer up. And at this time of year, it's always great to volunteer some time at the homeless shelter or something. Helping others has always made me feel better about myself too... That sounds a little egotistical....

I practice kung fu. Even though it's my daily routine, it's an unbelievably good stress reliever. Something about punches and kicks flying at your face, or pushing yourself till collapse or puke makes your problems go away, if only for a couple hours. Usually it's long enough for me to clear my head and try to find a better way to solve ______ (problem). (I'm in no way saying that I practice till I puke every day, and no, I do not have an eating disorder, lol. Usually when something is eating me up inside it has its way of getting out, and I'm [we all are] better off without those feelings.)
Then kick back a beer and RELAX.[Beer]

Exercise... I will get on the bicycle trainer, warm up, then crank my heart rate up to the 160 range and spin for as long as it takes for my lungs to quit hurting (gotta love endorphins). Or I'll go out to the garage and work the heavy bag with fists and feet until I'm exhausted (right now that's about 2 minutes....[LOL]).

Stuart, you and I are a lot moe alike than you'd probably care to realize. I do this exact thing daily. In fact, I feel lost when I don't have a book to read (or at least when I don't have a book that I would enjoy reading - got lots of books that I've never read but really have no interest in). Some nights I'll only make it a few pages, other nights I have to force myself to put a book down when I realize that it's 0100 and I have to get up at 0445.
As far as the OP question, I find that I havfe a LOT of gun related things I can be doing - whether it's cleaning/oiling the guns or working around the reloading bench. My little firearms/tactical corner of the basement has gotten to be a real mess and I need to clean and organize it. If this snow keeps up, that's probably what I'll be doing this weekend.
I'm getting ready to go now to Ft. Carson. They just opened up their new gun store, and while I can't buy a new gun, I do need to get a thigh rig & belt for a 1911 for my son for Christmas. (It brought a tear to my eye when I read his Christmas wish list and found that on there instead of all of the typical kid stuff he always used to ask for.)
Thanks guys your advice and kind words and good advice that I know I should do like running have helped me a lot.

Yeah...prolly stay away from the whiskey.
Here's something to think about:
I've been thinking about going back to work but I can't get hired anywhere. I've put in applications all over town and online with many, many companies. Mostly for just entry-level type jobs...just something for a paycheck. This has been going on for about 3 months now. Nothing.
I decided to go to school to get my CDL-A. Trucking companies will hire you right out of school. School is only 3 weeks and when you graduate you can easily go to work immediately. Of course, you have to drive over the road so, if that's not something that will work for you, it may not be the thing to do. I haven't decided yet if I'm going to try it for a few months or not.
But, seriously, after 3 weeks you have a job waiting. Most classes graduate on Fri and the students have a job with any of several of the big trucking companies on Monday.
You can anticipate a 42 day paid on-the-job-training program driving OTR with a trainer. Typical pay is $450 per week for the first 4 weeks and $500 per week for the remaining 2 weeks while you're in training. Everything is paid for by the company except your meals. Most of them even offer a reimbursement program for your school tuition (to the tune of $100 - $150 per month beginning after you finish your company driver training). Good benefits, too.
You can go to school locally here in Denver and the tuition includes everything but your DMV license fees (less than $50). The schools range in price from $2650 to $4000. Lots of assistance is available for this.
When you finish the driver training program you get the keys to your own late-model truck (sometimes a brand new one) and start driving at somewhere between .26 and .30 cents per mile. Most new drivers will earn about $38,000 - $40,000 the first year.
After a year you'll have experience to get hired by other companies that offer more local driving opportunities.
I just finished the first week and I don't have a clue what I'm gonna do yet because I really don't want to drive over the road. Actually, I just don't want to be away from home that much. But I may go ahead and do it for a year and then look for a local job or a dedicated run so I can have more home time.
Or I'll just have a really expensive driver's license.
I hope things work out for you, DOC. Feel free to contact me if you think you might want more info.
Here's a reading distraction for you:
http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=257985&page=1
10-25 hours of wtf distraction for you there, if your into "wtf" type of stories (weird hospital stories from mostly staffers) [Coffee]
You may think you're having a bad day, then you read about something like the the visiting sister that tries to give her unconscious brother some handiwork while demanding that he wake up because they still have to have kids together, then points to the beep on the monitor as proof its working. You can't make that $hit up! After reading it, you'll still be having a bad day, but you'll be really wierded out and glad you don't work in a hospital. [Tooth]
1) I haven't laughed that much in a long time..
2) Definatly glad I got out of the medical field, I would have slit my wrists a long time ago...[Tooth]
Bailey, once you get that really expensive driver's license, I'm sure you can work for CDOT. Both my uncle's work for CDOT and I know one of them used to be a trucker. RTD is hiring as well. They pay around 30 something thousand a year I think.
I've been applying for jobs for around 9 months with no luck. The great part about going through a temp agency, is that you can get hired on as a temp in a position where they might usually not take you, then show that you can do the job and be hired on permanent.

Whenever I feel down, I kick the shit of of my neighbor's cat. Ok, J/K... That cat doesn't come close to my house any more, thanks to airsoft. Was tormenting my chickens.
The voices in my head cheer me up. That and a good run. I am up to 4 miles for a long run and about 2-3 miles the other 2-3 days a week.
I'm feeling a little better today. I have a plan to get these guys off my back just need to sell some stuff and they will remove the repo order on my 66 Mustang. And I have a few prospects for employment too thanks to some the guys on here. I will be checking all the leads you guys are giving me too until I find something.
This is why I was looking for something to help with the blues. As much as I knew things looked F.U.B.A.R'd it would get better. That is why doing to unthinkable like hurting myself wasn't even an option.
I'm not out of the woods yet but there is hope that things can turn around for me.
THANKS MILLION GUYS.

Working out is always one way but I've been doing a lot of dry firing at home. Of course you have to make sure your firearms is clear...check it a few times to be sure...but you can improve your shooting exponentially by dry firing and can increase your speed (during mag changes on a handgun or AR anyhow) by practicing mag changes.

I had major back surgery seven weeks ago and am still somewhat house bound. I go to therapy twice a week and to the grocery store once and a while. Otherwise, I am here.
No shooting, no traveling, no lifting, no reloading...needless to say what else I can't do. I take Vicodin at night so that I can sleep a little.
Vacation time and sick leave have covered me so far, but that is soon to run out and I have to get back to work. But I don't know how.
I have an old tread mill upstairs and I use it a lot, it helps chase away the "boogey men". My computer friends have been a lot of help too.
So, all I can offer up is this, all those negative thoughts that are running through your brain at any given time are just that, thoughts...and are not necessarily reality. Many times we are the creator of the worst of our boogey men.
As originally popularized by General Joe Stillwell and later Barry Goldwater, "Don't let the bastards grind you down". [AR15]
Thanks for the advice. Hang in there. We are all in this together.

I "OF COURSE" dont break it anymore but this is what I did when I couldn't go shooting...
I discovered Aguila brand Colibri ammunition. It's 22lr type ammo, the actual length is ABOUT 22long, the casing is a 22lr case, but the bullet is so short it's somewhere between a 22short and 22longrifle.
it's also powered solely by primer, no gunpowder.
In the "old days" the most useful gun on a farm was chambered in 22short. It could take a bird or other varmint without creating a problem 1 mile down the road. It's still the most useful gun on my farm.
I was trying to help a friend with birds in his horse barn, roof of 1/2 inch plywood overlaid with corrugated roofing. Penetration was a problem. I remembered 22 gallery gun rounds that were made out of compressed lead dust, but I couldn't find it anywhere. So I tried the colibri ammo, it bounces right off the plywood, but takes out a squirrel or a bird no problem. OK, so a squirrel takes a lung shot. It chambers easily in any pump action rifle, I used the remington fieldmaster, that is chambered for 22lr. Out of a rifle it makes only the slightest hiss, out of a pistol is makes a bit more of a pop but that's because it's a revolver and has the cylinder gap. So quiet I can shoot it in my garage in the city. used to be about 11 bucks a brick, more expensive now. I bought several cases. I shoot it into a lyman pellet trap and have one of those reactive targets flippers. So I go out into the garage, but only out in the country because shooting in the city is PROHIBITED. Load up about 22 of them in the rifle and practice. If I miss the worse that happens is I mar the wall a bit. I put a piece of plexiglas behind the pellet trap for those times I do miss, well, I dont miss at garage ranges, but you get the idea. I hang it from the rafter and set it swinging a bit. Turn up the disco music to scare folks away and shoot until my stress melts.
So you CAN shoot inside, you just have to use the right stuff. I also used to do wax bullets for my revolver, but that takes a while to make them. Not too long if you're into mass production.
Hints for wax bullet's. Melt the wax to 1/2 inch thickness in a pan. Let the wax get very close to cool, then shove the primed cartridge in, twist and pull up. Let it dry with the wax bullet plug pointing upwards. Depending on dewpoint where you live, the cooling wax can attract moisture - so make these bullets and shoot them up. They dont store well. I once tried to melt the wax, put the primed cases in them and let them cool to get a nice seal. About 1 in 3 didn't fire, turns out moisture had somehow accumulated inside the casing and the wax was sealed so well it couldn't evaporate out. Now I put a pinhole down the center of the almost-cooled wax to release moisture. The primer flash will be hot enough to seal the hole and obturate the wax to fill the grooves on your barrel. I practiced a lot of single shot point shooting this way. a lot more noise from this than from colibri, again probably due to using a revolver. But the wax gets messy and you'll find bits of it all over the garage.
You CAN shoot at home, you just have to be creative and NEVER violate the law when doing so. MOST city's do not allow the discharge of any kind of projectile, this includes air rifles, slingshots and airsoft pistols. So if a cop comes to your door and asks if you've been shooting airsoft in the garage, the answer is "NO".
In fact, I'm going to go make some wax stuff now for the next time I run out to the farm!

I have a Wii and am in serious need of a good shoot'em up game. I had World at War for a while but traded it for Mario Kart and the new Mario Bros. DSB Outdoors, what is the Wii zombie game? Is that House of the Dead? Is it a rail game or can you actually walk around and stuff?
