Just picked up some new wheels this weekend. 1984 FJ60. Been wanting one for a long time. Missed having a truck since I sold my Tacoma 2 years ago. Plenty of room for guns and my dog. Looking forward to taking her camping and shooting next weekend.
Took her in for emissions, failed. Fixed the intake hose, replaced vacuum hoses, replaced air filter, replaced plugs. Idle went from 1000 down to 700 where it should be. then I realized despite my efforts I STILL have to take it to a shop. [Rant1]

I've had a couple of those over the years. Great vehicles.
The best people in town I've found to work on these is Rocky Mountain Cruisers on Federal. They know their stuff.
I bought an 87 from them about 6 years ago and they are currently putting together an FJ40 my brother just bought.
I want an FJ80 with factory lockers.

I just need to find a mechanic sympathetic to my plight. I bought the truck on Saturday and went right to the emissions facility. I figured if it didn't pass I'd have the rest of the day Saturday and all of Sunday to make repairs. Never had a vehicle fail before so I didn't read the fine print that says you HAVE to take it to a mechanic.
Only my CO was over. I tested at 59 and the limit is 55. Everything else was fine. [Weight]

Previous owner is supposed to provide an emissions test before you purchase. Did that not happen?
"If the buyer resides in an emissions region (http://www.colorado.gov/cs/Satellite?c=Page&cid=1185957917898&pagename=Revenue-MV%2FRMVLayout), it is the seller's responsibility to provide a current inspection certificate."

you should get a 2nd chance for free.

They are really cool but they get real thirsty real quick. OP I had an '84 FJ-60, and for some reason the red ones always rusted out faster then any other color LOL (she's in yota heaven). Yours looks good, good luck with the Emmissons on it
I always wanted one of those.
never can find a good one when I'm in the car market, dangit.
grats on the cruiser.
I know I'm bringing this thread back from the grave, but did you get it to pass? I've had more FJ's than fingers and could help you out. Pretty simple fix as long as you have good compression.
That's a nice looking 60. Don't see them that rust free any more.

All my gun money in 2011 went in the Landcruiser. It was worth it. Drove if for a year as a DD before picking up a 1998 Accord to use as a commuter.

What's wrong with Slee? Never been there, but was thinking about it....

Nothing just way overpriced. Last time I checked, years ago, sliders were reaching the $1000 mark. They're easy to make!!!

Unfurtunatley I got rid of my tube bender but if you got one or borrowed one Id weld it up for your LaRue rifle...I know wishful thinking. I can't help out for a few months till after the remodel but I'd help for free!![Beer]

Heck, I probably need to prioritize some other stuff ahead of sliders anyway. Shoot me a PM know when you get time to shoot!

Will do! I need some much needed recoil therapy SOON!
I think Mtn. Man's son builds sliders. I was planning on PM'ing him once I got around to it.

Sliders are Trail Gear 67" sliders for Tacoma or 4 Runner. They run about $150 for the pair. Cheaper than what you would pay for the steel.

Sweet deal!
And your FJ60 is sweet, I've always wanted one[Beer]
So what kind of mileage are you getting out of this rig, and do you have any oil consumption or any other type of on-going maintenance issues that one should be a aware of?

13mpg which is pretty much standard for a 2F engine.
It doesn't burn oil but it leaks. It has the standard drips from side cover, oil pan and rear main seal. Most people let the rear main leak until they are down there doing something else that involves dropping the tranny. I'll do my side cover and oil pan later this summer when I upgrade the alternator and put in a new fuel pump.
I have another common issue which is a leak at the rear of the intake exhaust manifold. Probably best off with headers at this point.
If you decide you want to drive a 27 year old carbureted vehicle I have 2 suggestions. Number one is to learn to do a lot of your own maintenance. You can dump endless amounts of money into these things trying to chase down engine issues. The emissions system is a complete nightmare. Toyota no longer makes a lot of the parts for the 2F engine. Number 2 is to just do an engine swap. A lot of people throw in the 5.7 Chevy Vortec. The 2F gets 210ft-lbs of torque at 1800 rpm, which is awesome for offroading to get that much torque that low. But you only have 135HP so you're limited there. You get used to just going slow. Not much can stop you, you just get there a bit slower.
If money was no object I'd take it to the Western slope and have Profitt's Cruisers toss in a new 350 Ramjet paired up with the H55F 5 speed tranny.
It's a perfect rig for going camping offroad. I removed my rear seats and built a storage box and sleeping platform.
It's a classic 80's rig. Everything is steel and bombproof and far as the axles and drivetrain are concerned. And the body styling is just awesome. You don't see rigs with lines like these anymore.
