Hey all!

Time to blow the dust off!
Our 1st match of the year comes with a bonus, 2 days of shooting 3gun at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton NM! Saturday March 19 (noon) we will hold a 3gun clinic, and on Sunday March 20 (10am) we will have a 4-5 stage match. These two days are going to be independent of each other, so you do NOT have to attend both days. This is the weekend before Superstition 3gun in Mesa AZ.

If you are planning to attend both days of shooting, you will need to bring AT LEAST 200 rounds of ammo for each gun and 25 slugs (this is just my guess). My rule of thumb is to bring more than I think I will need; "Taking left-over ammo home is better than running out of ammo at the range!"

CLINICS
The clinics will start at noon on the 19th, they will be geared to newer shooters and basic skills, but if you just want to get a little spring wake-up call...anyone can come. Each clinic will have a few minutes of talking/lecture, but the majority of the clinics will be shooting, so bring ammo.

Long rifle - We'll talk a little bit about sighting in iron, 1x dots and scoped guns, and the advantages/disadvantages of sighting in at different distances. Then we'll shoot with however you have them sighted in and work with sight picture at different distances. We will spend a little time with awkward rifle positions and offhand shooting.

Shotgun - We'll talk about loading options, chokes and the different ammo, including how to sight in slugs. Then we'll be doing loading drills of the different kinds and how you can practice at home and on the range. We will spend just a little time with slug shots with whatever slugs you bring with you!

Pistol - We'll talk about pistol fits into 3-gun, show some of the different targets you may see, and explain different scoring systems with the pistol in mind. How to practice at home and on the home range, then we will do a bit of shooting and some drills.

The possible 4th clinic will be about transitions between guns and how to abandon guns safely. We'll talk about the different rule sets and dry practice with slings if you've got'em. We'll get some practice on abandoning guns, reloading and shooting just a few rounds before your next transistion.

MATCH
The match will start at 10am (0930 briefing) the 20th, again geared toward basic skills and knocking the rust off;
1. Long rifle
2. shotgun, birdshot with a few select slug shots
3. 3gun, TRANSITIONS!
4. shotgun/pistol, which target, which gun???
(5). rifle/pistol, run & gun, then???

If you can, please let us know if you plan to attend either, so we can get an approximate head count. pre-registering is not required.

Questions? send em!
see you soon!

Long rifle, as it relates to 3 gun. Most use a AR15. We will probably max out at 400yds.

Fees are $30 for the clinic, $30 for the match.

One more question, what time does the match finish up? I will have to work monday that why I ask.

Its nice to see you on here JJ. For anyone that wants to goto a top notch 3 gun match the Johnson's put them on. I was sad you stopped doing the Johnson 3gun at PWSA, but putting on two big matches is not easy I'm sure.

We have had 2 "local" matches at the Whittington Center, the first in Sept was done at 5pm (everybody was beat) and the 2nd in Oct was done at 3pm.
I would suspect this match will be done at the more reasonable time of about 3. The 1st match in Sept 2010 we were so giddy about shooting local matches at the NRAWC we designed some killer stages, but ALL 5 were killer stages, and they just about killed all of us who shot...
I don't like to design 20 second stages, driving 200 miles one way to shoot 100 seconds seems like a waste to me...so I go for the gusto and sometimes get spanked for it.
Be asured these will be NOT be 20 second stages, nor will they be 10 minute ones either...

sorry bout the rambling answer...[Dunno]

I've been shooting 3 gun for a year or two now, and this seems pretty interesting. I'm on the Colorado School of Mines trap team and we might be attending a competition at the Whittington center on the 18th-20th (trap two days, sporting clays the last). If we do attend, I'd probably skip the sporting clays on the 20th and shoot 3 gun instead because it's so much fun.

Just so I bring enough ammo, is about 100 rounds per gun and 15 slugs a good amount to bring for just the match?

Guess what? We are doing it again this weekend! I know, 2 weeks after the last one...and a week after SMM3G...

This Saturday, 2 April 2010, 5 stage 3gun match at NRA Whittington Center. $30. Shooter's briefing starts at 0930, newcomers briefing starts at 0900, at the pistol berms. If you are not familar, as for directions at the gate. Remember once you get to the gate, you are about 15 minutes from the area where we shoot. don't be late, shooting starts at 1000, we usually are finished with shooting and cleanup at about 1500-1530.
We will have longer rifle shots out to 400 or so, along with the normal compliment of mixed stages. (all shotgun, all rifle, shotgun/pistol, rifle/pistol, 3gun) bring 100 rounds of each plus 15 slugs and you will probably take a little ammo back home after the match.
Earily arrivals who help set up will get a discount! If at all possible any help will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, see you soon!

Just got this email:

Just a reminder about Saturday's (May 14) match at the Whittington Center in Raton. 5 stages - the 3-Gun should be run and gun...no boring practice stage this month! Long rifle - we're checking out some new targets! Bring 100 of each rifle, pistol, birdshot and about 10 slugs!
If you get there before 8am AND help set up a stage, you get a discount! Newbie briefing 0900, Shooter's briefing 0930. Plan is to start shooting by 1000.
$30
Weather looks okay, but always check e-mail before you head out in case of weird storms!
See you there! (We start and are organized around the pistol berms. Ask at the gate if you don't know how to get there!)

Where is everyone!? The Johnson 3gun moved to the Whittington Center in Raton NM last summer, but not many shooters have been driving in from Colorado. Find some buddies and carpool if you have to, but all of the three gunners on this site should know that the Johnson's have been working hard to put together some fun monthly events. JJ travels to many of the national level events and uses elements from those big matches in his stage designs. Yesterday, we shot a 400yd rifle stage in open terrain and a Texas star at 100yds with our rifles. Vtac walls, mock roof tops, tons of steel and airial targets are the norm here, not the exception. Talk about fun. For those who haven't shot at the Whittington Center before, the site is fantastic and extremely scenic. Someone actually had to scare deer off the rifle stage with a truck and horn. The Whittington Center is also the site for the annual and national level Rocky Mountain 3gun. I love to shoot competitions and this is on my must shoot list each month. I realize this is a bit of a drive, but there are 4 of us who regularly carpool down. Entry is $30 and gas usually runs about $20 each. I spend that much money when I drive up to Aurora for thier IPSC matches. If you brown bag a lunch and reload your ammo, the cost can be kept reasonable. Next match is scheduled for June 11th. Get off the sofa, grab your gear and come shoot a fun match.

Again, thank you JJ and Denise for hosting a terrific match. The stages were all extra good this time. Challenging and fast, while remaining technical enough to sort out those with skills from those with... well less skills. The 450yds ABC was especially challenging and the half hidden pistol steal at 35yds was harder to hit than I thought it would be. Love it when we shoot the texas star with rifle too. I also liked the shotgun stage with the close and far targets, forcing a choke compromise. Should I run an openish choke for the close airial clays and go really fast or a tighter choke for those 30yd steel targets at the end? Not sure how you manage to pull down near perfect weather all the time too. Anyway, good job.

For those wanting a solid 3gun experience, with targets at point blank out to fly speck distances, steel, airials, unusual shooting situations, this is a great match and well worth the drive. I always find some one to car pool with to share the gas. Also, anyone planning to shoot the RM3G, should try to make the July match, because the Johnsons use the local matches to develope the elements which will be used at the big match. This year will be my first RM3G, but from the matches I've shot there so far, I'm certain that there will be a 90yd texas star to shoot with rifle in one of the stages. There will be a shotgun/pistol stage which will force the shooters to really think about which and how many targets to shoot with each gun and will be shot a hundred different ways. There will be some challenging slug shots. There will be rifle shots which will have to be made while laying on rough tundra and at odd body possitions. I'm guessing there will be some 500+ yrd targets too. If you are shooting the RM3G this year, you should hit the July match.

Neither. Shoot spreaders for the close up stuff and #4 or #6s long heavy steel. Or even #4 buck.

My first time at RM3G and I will be back next year for sure! The stages were excellent and extremely challenging. I usually like the "3 gun" stages, but at this match I actually enjoyed the all rifle, pistol and shotgun stages the best. Wish I had shot better, but I'll be better prepared next year. I'm feeling a little less overwhelmed, so barring any extreme weather, the Sept 17 match is on at Whittington.
5 stages - Newbie briefing 0900, shooter's briefing 0930. We try to get shooting as early as we're all there!
$30 each - anyone who shows up before 0800 and helps set up a stage gets a discount!

Usually, plenty of rooms at Whittington to stay either the night before or the night after...but it's a busy weekend so who knows???

As usual, we plan one long range rifle plus(usually 400 or more), a 3-Gun stage (usually rifle out to 100), a shotgun/pistol, a pistol/rifle and an all shotgun! Meet near the pistol berms and we'll go from there!

Hope to see you there!

While I'm typing...

We were kind of sad that our turnout was so low in 2011. Maybe we didn't make them special enough...who knows! It is a VERY long drive from almost everywhere!

Anyway, the plan for 2012, is to have a 3-Gun match in March (following some clinics), July and either September or October.
In April, we plan to have a one day, 6 stage (still in the planning stages) rifle only match. We plan at least 3 long range stages as well as some run and gun and close quarters.
In June, we're planning a one day, 6 stage (we'll talk) shotgun only match. It would require birdshot, slugs and probably some buckshot!

That's the plan! Wouldn't mind hearing some opinions on the following:

We have them on weekends so people can come and not miss work. Would YOU be more likely to come if the one gun matches were a day and a half instead of one??? Would you like day and a half 3-Gun matches??

What would it take for some of you in our surrounding states: Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, even Oklahoma and Missouri to join us?? Our stages are not quite as intense as JP Enterprises' Rocky Mountain 3-Gun, but they're more intense than your regular local matches...(Okay, sometimes I (or JJ) goes a little overboard and they ended up being almost as long as the National stages. http://www.brianenos.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/devil.gif AND they are at Whittington, so it's beautiful and full of wildlife!!!! (Even had to stop last year for deer and pronghorn!) http://www.brianenos.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/goof.gif

We don't give out prizes, obviously, but would certificates/awards help???

What kind of clinics would you be interested in attending in March??

If J-Ho promises to park your car, would you be more likely to drive your old junker up to shoot with us??? http://www.brianenos.com/forums/public/style_emoticons/default/roflol.gif

Thanks and hope to see you in September!

Honestly the biggest issue is Distance, For me driving a hour and half is no big deal. but guys that live in Denver or springs are looking at 3+ hours. Also that's about the same time it takes to get anywhere south of Raton. Your really only get the more dedicated 3gunners to drive those distances. One of the biggest reason I think lake George 3-gun matches do so well is because they're centrally located to everyone, making it more accessible to newer shooters

I think the clinic on sat and match on sun format went over well. Might try expanding on that concept. Also, I'm not sure everyone knows how affordable Whittington lodging can be. 6 stages would certainly help attract, but you will always fight distance. Stage content so far has been terrific and well worth the trip. 3 really good weekends, might be better overall than 6 smaller ones. Might be easier on you two as well.

As for me personally, I will continue to attend these matches as they are hands down the best multigun experience along the front range. Thankyou so much for all of the hard work you've put into our growing sport.

Anyway, 5 really cool stages, Long rifle stage with one target out at 500 yards (full size IPSC metric steel), a long range 3gun stage, a rifle and a pistol stage on the same range, run it twice; see which you are faster at in a CQB situation, rifle or pistol. Shotgun/pistol choicey stage, AND if enough people tell us they are coming (rm3gun@yahoo.com), I will also set up another really cool make-you-think 3gun stage to make 6 total stages!

Hey 3G enthusiasts, this Sat is the last Johnson 3G of the season before 3gun shuts down for 6 months in our area. If you want to get in a super solid match before season end, then get down to the NRA Whittington center this Sat. The round count is high enough to be really fun, but not so high as to break the bank. Can't afford gas? Grab some buddies and carpool. Long drive? Get there Fri night and stay in competitor housing. It's only $26, and it's right there on the range. I know it's kinda far, but 4 months from now we will all be jonesin for a match. Don't be the guy who sleeps in on Sat and then regrets not going.

Shoot 3gun on Saturday, then spend the nite and shoot clays or bring your long range gun and do some plinking on sunday at the most awsome range in the country! Check out www.nrawc.org (http://www.nrawc.org).

Five stages, 3 will be in natural terrain!

Bring a rifle sling, 100 rounds for each gun and 10 slugs. No buckshot needed this month...

1. Pistol/long rifle (natural terrain)
2. Shotgun (natural terrain)
3. Pistol/shotgun (natural terrain)
4. 3-gun
5. Shotgun/rifle

Newbie briefing at 0900, followed by shooters brief, should start shooting by about 0930. Sign up starts at 0830.

If you can help set-up, I will be there all day friday, or could use help before 0830 saturday morning. (that's a hint!!!) :)

Once again, thankyou JJ and Denise for an excellent match! The open terrain stages were outstanding! Keep it up. For those who missed out, next match is in July. It really is worth the drive to Whittington at least a couple of matches a season as these matches really are very very good. This weekend there was a 25 shell, river run shotgun course with spinners, swingers, poppers, flippers and throwers. There was a pistol/rifle stage with pistol targets out to 35yds and rifle out to 400 from a wall which was just awkward enough to make the long shots challenging. The 3gun stage was straight forward, but had some long slug shots. Caulkin should be nicknamed "Road Runner", and I some times feel a bit like the coyote trying to catch him. If you don't like to drive that much in one day, lodging is cheap at the Whittington center, and there are some of us who carpool regularly.

Those who are shooting RM3G would benefit by the practice, as there will be elements of the big match in the small match. We won't be shooting the RM3G stages, but JJ is putting together comprehensive, natural terrain stages which will tax the same skills used at the big event. In short, if you can rock the local match, you should be able to perform well at RM3G. If not, you will know what you need to go practice before the big event. Bring a sling for your rifle!
