View Full Version : Aerogarden
So I got my fiance an Aerogarden for her birthday. Pretty excited to see how well the herb seed kit (came with it) grows.
Here is a picture of one after a few weeks of growing:

If you youtube for videos of one of these, be prepared to sort through the 90% of the videos of people growing pot in them.
Anyway, I think it is pretty cool and can't wait to get it going. Here is a link to all their seed kits. They even have one where you can just drop your own seeds in there and grow whatever you want.

I think Stu lives in an apartment. I have a friend who cannot stop talking about Aerogarden. Unless they can grow chicken wing or steak out of those, I think I ll pass. [Twist]

Come on, you need some fresh herbs to spice up the chicken or the steak. Or at least, some kind of herbs and spices, doesn't have to be fresh.
I really like the Webber Chicago Style stuff on steaks.

We live in an apartment, and our back porch directly faces the moon. Plus, with this, you can harvest herbs for 4-5 months (according to all the reviews). I don't think you could do that with a regular garden. And the stuff is harvest ready in about 4 weeks. That is all for the herb kit though, some stuff, like jalapenos, apparently take longer.

Too bad. For the last few years we have been using "rock dust" (I know, sounds retarded) in our garden with absolutely amazing results. I bet you could use some in one of those and make monster plants...
There is no dirt in an aerogarden. Just water. Every two weeks you add a nutrient packet.

Huh? That's cool. I haven't ever heard of them till now.

You have mentioned about your family land in the past. Have you ever thought about setup some gardening/green house there? Just wondering.
Excellent observation Ken. A few things. 1) I don't know anything about gardening or green houses. 2) The land is about an 1 1/2 hours away, so I don't get up there very much. I can get pretty lazy about cleaning my fish tank that is in my living room. I don't know how well I'd stay on top of a garden that is a 3 hour round trip away from me.
Maybe if I went up there every weekend or something. Also, I don't have the time or money until I get a more regular full time job.

My brother got my Dad the Aerogarden a few years ago. I thought he'd hate it but I was wrong. He grows some mean basil. His local feed store even stocks supplies, but you can stretch the supplies much longer than directions say. Just a basic hydroponics system, you could probably spend a lot more money in a hydroponics shop for a light and tray, but save money on rockwool and fertilizer (my cousin owns a couple shops in Oregon and even a few patents). Needless to say you can have a pretty serious garden on your kitchen counter.
Aerogarden update:
Planted : April 3, 2011 at around 11:00pm
Some had started showing activity the very next day.
Here are pictures taken on 04/20/2011. Just over two weeks. The leaves on Italian Basil and Globe Basil (the largest two) doubled in size from the morning of 04/19 to when we returned home at around 6pm on 04/19. Sorry for the low res pics. Still using that crappy loaner phone.
Whole garden.

Italian Basil up front, Mint back right, failed Oregano on the back left.

We've added water one time, and nutrients one time. The lights turn on and off by themselves. Overall pretty happy so far, with the exception of the Oregano. I don't know what it is doing. It sprouted, but has remained very small and sickly looking. Maybe it will pull though eventually.
pretty sweet...but since I am gone so much it really wouldn't do me a whole lot of good. most stuff would be dead or destroyed by my dogs
You just add water and a nutrient packet once about every two weeks. Plus, don't you have a fiance? Just set it up in the kitchen like we did, and she can swing by the Aerogarden every morning on the way to "work" and make sure everything is okay.
