Mean Streets Tactical Training
Kalashnikov Combatives for the AK47/74 Rifle
June 12th, 2011 at Buffalo Creek Gun Club
http://www.rusmilitary.com/images/ak74_wood.jpg

This class is designed to teach the defensive rifle warrior the skills required to decisively engage a threat and deal with the stress of a combat environment. The student will learn to deploy their AK47 or AK74 Kalashnikov rifle in close quarters and urban combat conditions.

The class is based on the Russian Army’s proven training techniques. This is a combatives class that will allow the shooter to zero their rifle and shoot it from various unconventional shooting positions and distances. Multiple skill builder drills will be utilized to reinforce techniques used by today's AK warriors. Expect the class to be fast paced and serious but completely fun and interesting. It will be somewhat different than a typical TacRifle course. Some of the Russian concepts taught in the class are really different than American military doctrine and what most western shooters use. The AK series rifle was desiged to be a complete weapons system and everything to support that doctrine is built into the rifle. The class will show you there is much more to the AK than meets the eye!

The course will emphasize AK specific operations:

Efficient gun handling
Military marksmanship techniques
Russian military AK zeroing technique- VERY Different!
AK specific speed and agility shooting methods- economy of motion with the AK
AK specific range estimation
AK balistics for both 7.62 x 39 and 5.45 x 39 calibers
Shooting from various unconventional positions and distances
Malfunction clearances
AK modifications considerationsThe class is built upon principals used by the Russian Army to train soldiers to engage threats from various distances and to keep their AK series rifle operational. A former Russian Army AK specialist guest instructor will be on hand to help students master their AK rifle. The advantage of this class is the fact you will learn about your AK without there being other types rifles in the class to take time away from your training. Also, our guest instructor, Ivan, is a true AK expert and will help you to learn how it operates most efficiently, care and maintenance, and how the Russian military utilizes this weapon system for maximum effectiveness.

Class cost is $150. Class date is June 12th at Buffalo Creek Gun Club (http://www.bcgc.com)near Bailey Colorado. 400 rounds required.

Mean Streets Tactical Training strives for the optimum student to instructor ratio so this class is limited to 12 students.

Ivan and I were talking about the class last week. What we wanted people to know about the class is that it has some real differences in how the rifle is ran. Many of the techniques Ivan will showcase are very different than most of us US military shooters are used to seeing.

For example:
The AK has a very different sight system but once you see how the Russian Army uses the sights, you will find it very usefull.
Disussions on how best to accessorize your AK.
There are some important maintenance items that people should know about the AK rifle.

Hopefully you can come out and have a great time running your rifle with us! See you on the range!

This looks like a great course for me to get accustomed to my new AK (and then some), however, if I can't commit to the June class, might there be another for 2011 or is it a once a year only?

Thanks

Comrades,

I hear a lot of complains from American shooters that AKs are inaccurate, they are not ergonomic and they just feel different, etc. Then I see same shooters add quad rails, peep sights, extended mag releases, dust covers with weaver rails, etc. Guys I must say that the AK platform is very different from M16/AR15 platform. Not only by design, but also the purpose. The biggest mistake the American shooters do, is they try to run AKs just like they run their ARs. I personally believe that the shooters do that due to lack of education and understanding of the system as whole. We are here to fix that.

Comrades come to the class and learn how to shoot AKs the Russian way!

Ivan.

I think it is a fantastic idea and I hope to be there! How many of us have AKs and really can just point and shoot because of the relatively crude sights? I'd like to see what these Russkis can teach me!![Beer]

So far we only have this one class scheduled for this year. We want to gauge interest. We know this is an AR world out there. After the great Obama gun blitz though, we saw a LOT of folks buy AK's simply because of price and ammo cost.

As you can see, Ivan is really stoked about getting this class going!

Registration is easy, send an email to meanstreetstactical@hotmail.com. We ask for a $50 non refundable deposit and that locks your slot. That's it. Easy.

I think this class is going to be a hoot and super informative! I can tell you from personal experience training with Ivan, we have a lot of fun but run the guns HARD! Just the zeroing excersise is worth coming to the class. Really interesting.

i have a buddy who is an ex ukrainian army so i've learned alot from him. i advise anyone with an ak to learn the russian method for running your ak as almost everything is just about the opposite way you run an ar. once you learn and practice the russian methods the layout on an ak will make much more sense to you. if i am free in june i might want to come join you guys to sharpen what my buddy has taught me.

Sounds pretty fun. Hope it won't be held against me that my AK came with a quad rail (I love it) but I have no qualms about getting it a bit dirty.

There are certain upgrades that really do make your AK better. A quad rail for a light is a good thing. There are certainly other ways to accessorize the rifle that don't add any value!

I'm a fan of the MI forend, its not any heavier than wood and their top covers can mount red dots and reflex sights to cowitness with the irons.

It also deals with the heat from the gas tube way better...the first time I took my Tantal out, my friend and I had the bakelite smoking. The aluminum forend barely gets hot to the touch. That being said I think a pair of gloves is a big requirement for the class. [Tooth]

Is there a "recommended gear" list somewhere? I thought I saw a # of round requirement, but I'm wondering about magazines and other things.

I see no disadvantages with running AK left handed, in fact you may even be more efficient with your gun than us right handed shooters. We can definitely work with you.

See you at the range!

I've taken MSTT Carbine Course and it was great. I've taken other carbine courses from other organizations and these guys are right on par. As soon as I can scrounge up enough $$$ for an AK, I plan on taking this course...most likely next year. Would love to take one of the new handgun modules next. Looking forward to getting the training, not looking forward to the drive though...wash-board roads suck! LOL

Time of Trainnig
We meet at Pine Junction at 8:00 AM sharp and convoy to the training location at 8:20. We are on the range at 9:00 and train all day until 5-5:30. Once you register you get over communicated to by the cadre. You will always know what is going on with your training date. Some classes have not gotten off until after 6 depending on how much ammo they brought. Basically we want you to shoot it all!

Of course if you bring too much and have left overs, the cadre does offer FREE disposal service. I mean, how can you beat free?
[M2]

The Road Conditions
The road changes depending on how Park County maintains it. They grade it a few times per summer but not as much as in the past now that Wellington Lake is closed to the public. We've been coming in from the Bailey side lately because the dirt section is actually shorter. BUT, the washboards can be worse on that route due to having more traffic. Low cars are generally fine. We did have a Corvette that had to stop on the last road in due to a pot hole that he could not get over without bottoming out. But that was 2 years ago. A Honda Civic can get to the range no sweat.

Gear
For any carbine class, I always recommend a couple things:

Gloves- Ivan will argue this one! Russians just train until they bleed. I personally see no reason for bleeding all over your rifle unless you have to!
Mag pouches. Go insurgent style and get something that can be donned quickly and carries ALL your gear on one setup. Aviod drop holsters and all that leg bag stuff. It is just an expedient way to spread your gear all over the range faster. An integrated system like a SOC-C belt kit or US Palm Attack Rack are better.
Dump Bag- super handy for speed reloads or kit management.
Pants with integrated knee pads like 5.11 tactical. Slip on's are fine but you are alwyas jacking with them. Inserts are always better.
Long sleeves. You will shoot a lot from various unconventional positions and many hasty prone positions. Why get ground up if you don't have to?
Food, water, and snivel gear. We train in all weather and train all day long. Lunch is out of your kit on the range. Training can be physically exerting so you have to stay hydrated.

With the huge cost of gas, I think the folks that are signed up should try to carpool and thus share/reduce gas costs for a driver. I'm in Westminster at 68th and Sheridan. If someone wants to hop in with me, I'd like to share the expense.

If anyone is looking for a really good deal on an AK74 then follow this link:
http://centerfiresystems.com/akagun74.aspx - $399!
http://centerfiresystems.com/productimages/ak/AKAGUN-74_rt-D.jpg

I bought one of these 74's last year and think it is great for a training weapon. I shoot it 3 times more than my Arsenal Siaga in 7.62. I put wood furniture on mine in Warsaw length to make it a little faster to mount. Plus I lust like the wood look. It gets a little beat up but that adds character to the rifle.

The 5.45 x 39 ammo is so cheap its sick! Here is a great price for Russian Military ammo:
http://www.aimsurplus.com/product.aspx?item=A54539R&name=Russian+5.45x39+53grn+FMJ+1080rd+Can&groupid=179

They also have 7.62 x 39 for a decent price:

Here is a link to help find ammo. Just sort by caliber.

Any com-block military surplus magazines would work just fine. Centerfiresystems.com has a deal for 4 Bulgarian mags for 47.99 it also comes with pouch or you can get the individually for 12.99 EA. There are other sources on internet, google it and you will find tons of them. Also you may want to check out local shop 5280 armory they may have them. Hope this helps.

Have you shot the linked ammo from your rifle yet? I actually bought both, and it turns out that the Century rifle from Centerfire is not chrome lined. The Russian surplus is corrosive - I have experience from my Mosin, but have you seen any corrosion with your cleaning regimen?

No issues with corrosive ammo, just clean your rifle after shooting. We will go over how to clean it and what products to use.

It was a good class! Had alot of fun, learned some new tricks. The Russian system is another tool in the toolbox. Very effective, quick sighting system. Had a great time at the wall! Tim and Ivan and the rest of the crew put on a great event!

Curious.....

The Krink shot great, it was great to have a chance to run it.

Thanks Mean Streets!

Hey Ivan, where do you get those sight in targets?

Dave,

I made the targets myself. (red star was my addition) However, the design was taken straight from Russian AK manuals. For zeroing you could take 11x17 paper (close enough) paint it black use the same technique you learn in the class refer to the ballistic table in the handouts that I give you. Sight "3" @ 100m measure from the bottom of the paper.

Ivan.

Ivan, you should market those targets here and on some of the AK forums.

You may be surprised at how well they may sell!

Thanks again, we had alot of fun!

You and Tim should consider having more AK classes!

Let us know when you post that additional info you were discussing on your blog!
