My son, the Oxford kid but a none techie, studied hard and passed his test with a 100%. He now wants to continue to upgrade and even learn code - not required now days but used by many... including myself!

I have always been interested in doing this, is there a study book I can download? also how much does equipment usually run to start off with?

I am not aware of a downloadable study book. $19 at HRO in Denver. The Gordon West book is good. the ARRL book is a huge in depth study guide for total beginners... if you do not know the difference between a transistor and a Ford pickup!

You can download phone apps for a few bucks and take practice tests on your phone or go on line @ QRZ.com and take free practice test.

Equipment price varies from $120 for a basic handheld for local communications on VHF and UHF to 10 grand for top end HF rig with full bells and whistles.
There will be a hamfest [ham-garage-sale] near you...
