So I recently (today) picked up my first handgun, a Sig 229 9mm.

The gun is brand new, still in the plastic, and of course has a nice coating
of residual oil from assembly and shipping. Do people make it a habit to
clean a new guy before a trip to the range or is that something better left
till after a few rounds have been through it?

I plan to at least wipe off all the surface oil, but do I need to field
strip it clean the whole thing?

Here is a pre-wipe down picture.  I can't wait to get to the range.

Exterior oil should be just wiped off. If theres any grease on the slide and rails, leave it there for the first couple hundred to 500 rnds. U can add a couple drops of oil to the slide rails and barrel before shooting it if you want. It helps break in. After the first 500 rounds, field strip, clean, relube. GTG.

depending on the ammo and rate of fire, you might need to add a drop or two of oil after a few hundred

Maybe I'm just a bit anal but I always strip my new guns down and give them a thorough look over, cleaning, and re-lube with my favorite products before they ever hit the range.

Wipe off exterior oil and shoot as-is. Clean after a few hundred rounds. Repeat.

Personally, I always give a new gun a thorough cleaning before I hit the range with it. SIGs especially don't need much oil- a drop on the slide rails, a drop in the trigger group, and you should be good to go. Enjoy that 229, I bought one back in Jan, and love it!

+1. I just field strip and lube, run a swatch down the bore.
