View Full Version : Range Cleanup Day, June 25th - South Site

With the recent ‘bad publicity’ in the Gazette on irresponsible shooters in the Pikes Peak National Forest, I want to organize a Range Cleanup Day. I’m shooting for this Saturday, June 25th at the South Site area. Next weekend is the 4th of July weekend, so didn’t want to do it then and I feel it’s important to jump on this quick. I will be taking ‘Before & After’ pics of the work we did and post them on the site to show the awesome work we did.
I may also script an e-mail to send to the local media to let them know not ‘all shooters’ are dragging up water heaters and computers to shot at and we don’t shoot at tree’s. I’ll be bringing trash bags, rakes, water, soda and snacks for us to eat as we work. This will be more of a cleanup/hanging out type day rather than shooting. Not to say I won’t bring a plinker or 2 to have some fun with J
It was mentioned in another thread about not having your pic taken as to not be associated with a ‘Gun Club’. That’s cool, but come up and help out anyway, I won’t snap a pic of anyone, just the work being done !
Let me know if you can make it so I'll know how much drink & snacks to bring.
I'll be there about 7:30 in hopes of getting the main range area blocked off from shooters so we can clean.
As far as trash dumping, haven't worked that out yet, but I know I can dump several bags (some pallets too) in the dumpster at work.
Thanks,
Kyle
How far is the south site from denver?

What time and where can we dump the trash after, any landfills or just to the nearest hippies house?
Id like to be there to load up the truck and help out.

I'll be the first, what time? I'll bring my truck and help with the snack a bit.

How far is the south site from denver?
About 1.5-1.75 hours if you take the scenic route (Hwy 285 to Pine Junction, turn left at the light on CO 126, turn right in Deckers on Hwy 67.)

I'll be there at 7:30 in hopes of blocking the main range off for cleaning.
For trash dumping, I can take a couple of pallets and several bags to dump at work. I'll take the rest of the bags home to put in my garbage can for regular trash guys to get. Last time I was up there, I didn't see any appliances, just a few pallets.
Wish I could. Got a wedding to go to on Saturday...bleh...
[LOL] That's so crazy! I have a wedding to go to on Sat too! He's one of my best friends that I grew up with so ordinarily I'd just skip the proceedings and go straight to the reception after I did some shooting/cleanup... Oh well.
It wasn't TOO bad when I was up there last weekend. I didn't see any major trash left there, just millions of shotgun wads, spent shell casings, and broken clays.
I wish I could make the clean-up. I will be down for the next one!

Please shoot me directions starting on I-225 goin south or a physical address I can Google... I'm located in Aurora. I've never been there so I'd hate to get lost and not show up.

Here is a map from our site under places to shoot. It has everything on it so you'll want to find the spot north of woodland park on 67.
I hope many more will join in.
Rico I think 2-4 has a few open dumpsters.........[ROFL1]

No problem, I'm confident some 'jackwagon' will mess it up soon enough.
I'll do another cleanup later in the year.
This may be something good for others to do to their 'local range'.
Would the forest service block the area for a few hours? Much safer that way, and good for them to see that somebody cares.

Would the forest service block the area for a few hours?Perhaps someone could call and ask? Maybe arrange for a coordinated effort between the USFS and those of us that go to do a clean up.

I have to work.[DrillS]
ok ill fess up , since big mat tried to get the last one going i have been going to south site 2-4 times a week . picking up trash , tv's , mountains of shotgun hulks , brass , lead , steel and all sort of shot up sh*t (i do recycle a lot of it to help pay for gas). spending 20-40 hours a week cleaning up has helped a lot (the place is cleaner ). i usually get there around 7-8 am and leave around 5-6 .
the main area is a real mess but i have sort of gotten lane 2 in order (8 hours with a rake and 3 full trash bags later , but its a nicer lane to shoot in (as i have been told by many shooters ) .
wish i could make saturday (have plans to take my father out) but for those of you who cant make this one , feel free to meet me any monday or wednesday (yes ill be there tomorrow just like last week)
i always have a spare trash bag for a fellow shooter .
hope i dont sound like an ass and also hope you guys have fun and get tons done

Well you must be the reason the lane I was shooting in last weekend was relatively clean! Thank you for your efforts to keep our shooting area open.

SOUTH SHOOT N39 08.603 W105 07.697 7864 ft
If you go to Google Maps (http://maps.google.com) and enter this GPS LAT/LONG (N39 08.603 W105 07.697) into the search block it will bring you to the location of the South Site.
Looking forward to seeing as many of you there as can make it!
Oh yeah, don't forget to bring your leaf rakes - it makes getting those pesky shotgun shell hulls together so much easier.
ETA: alxone: (1) You don't sound like an a$$; and (2) I can't thank you enough for your efforts for all shooters.

Spent a good amount of time last weekend picking up trash and steel and shells and bottles/cans/car parts (tail lights? really?) at the top of the hill, and hopefully left it better than I found it. I'm just thankful for a place to go and want to pitch in when I can. I'm out of town this weekend, otherwise I would love to help, I'll keep an eye out for the next cleaning day.
I will try and make this but no promises I have family in town the next two weeks.

I'd be game if I didnt work saturdays. Im usually off wednesdays and sundays. Hope you guys have a good turnout.
It would be interesting to see if you get someone from the media to come out and cover a story of shooters cleaning up a range. I wouldnt care if my picture was taken, I have nothing to hide about being involved in firearms. Others may have different reservations about their pictures taken though.

It's rough, but I can get my Camry in there.
Planning on shutting it down, eh? I've been planning for over a week for a party of 3 or 4 to do some plinking at the south site this Sat. morning. What are you expecting to do if non-club members were planning on using the area this Sat?
I regularly take out more than I bring whenever I go shooting in a public area. I keep black trash bags in my range bag.
I'll have to check with the wife to see if this won't be a problem for our schedule to extend the day to come out and clean up and then do some shooting.
thinking about making some postings (for the park) that say "please do not shoot trees.clean your mess -thanks your fellow shooters " or something like that .also looking into some trash cans fixed to a poll or chained up (gotta call the park ranger first )
the top 5 worst things left behind
1 ear plugs (tops my list cause its gross )
2 stuffed animals (really the stuffing gets everywhere and yep that stuffing is plastic )
3 shot gun hulks and inner parts (plastic in general but shotgun bits are the worst )
4 glass (just a hazard , like no one else wants to put up targets without getting cut )
5 electronics (t.v.'s and computers )
things that help
trash bags
gloves
rake
buckets (for brass and other small recyclables)
good attitude (i tried to do it in a bad mood thinking it would cheer me up , i was wrong)
good weather (obvious reasons )
water!!!! ( drinking and washing up )
if you bring the wife and or kids you can always swing by the river on the way back to soak the feet in (well at least me and my lady like to ). the drive from denver is nice (about 2 hours from 5 points) , lots of deer and critters to look at .
looks like i might be able to make it sat , also running late today (getting the lady to go ) so if anyone was lookin snag a trash bag or say hello ill be around from 11-6

I think I'll make it. New to Colorado and was scoping out the places to shoot, so I drove by the site last Sunday, didn't get a chance to shoot--just wanted to figure out where it was to go shooting this week. I guess I can be there early to lend a hand!

Sure, 0730 would work (it'll instill some disipline in me to get up that early on a Saturday if someone else was leaving at the same time) :) Want to meet on the 24 on the way up? Say at the Rudys? Or whatevers convenient

Got the Jeep loaded up with boxes, bags, rakes, shovels and some extra gloves. I've got some Pepsi, water & Gator Aid cooling in the fridge and will throw them in the cooler with ice in the AM. I bought some snacks for us to munch on while we work, nothing fancy though. If someone wanted to bring an extra cooler with ice, that would be cool. I've got more bottled water than will fit in mine.
See you guys in the morning [Beer]

Sorry I wasn't able to make it guys! We just had too much going on yesterday (family wise) and I couldn't break away. Hopefully I can make the next one.
I've got my two boys trained that we always leave with more than we went with, so much so that they just automatically grab trash bags, etc to take without being asked to do so anymore [HiFive]. Hopefully some of the people that have been leaving all the crap out there for the rest of us to clean up will catch on and at least start taking some of their trash with them (not holding my breath) so that these clean-up days can turn into more of a shooting get together and less of a cleaning trip, along with showing that some of us gun totin' folk ain't just bass-ackwards red necks that don't give a shiat about nuttin' but drinkin', shootin', and killin' stuff.
Thank you to everyone that was able to go out and make a difference!

Boy, Alex is an OK guy. His generosity shows that he is really one thoughtful shooter. If I lived about 150 miles closer, I'd gladly help with some of the clean up details but I'm just a "little" too far South.
