[insert anti cop bashing retort here]
(this could go on all day)
It's unclear at this point if the semi-automatic rifle was loaded or not.
It's crystal fuckin clear. You can see a 30rd mag in it.
OMG, it's an assault rifle!
(read the comments after the article- obviously written by clueless ig-no-f***s).

damn humans....
While it's an amazing story, it's going to happen now and again. I've done stupid stuff and I can't blame them for making a mistake. Let's just say I'm not going to cast a stone when I, myself, could be cast against :).
ASSAULT RIFLE! MACHINE GUN! SAVE THE CHILDREN! OH NOES!

"It is unacceptable that a rifle was left unattended on a patrol car and people should expect more from their police department,"
It's amazes me that they didn't once use the word "assault rifle" in the article. They danced around it so wonderfully. Wonder why?

Whitcomb says the officers didn't break any laws.
seem to remember a certain story about a guy that left his CCW in a bathroom and everyone here was ready to crucify him, revoke his CCW! Lynch, Burn HIM!
well I promise you this, if you left a laoded AR on your trunk while driving down the road, your ass would be minced-meat with a dollop of whipped cream and a cherry on top.
Illegal transport, unlawful possession, reckless endangerment and Im sure if the cop can swing it, Resisting arrest and a Failure to signal. Oh, and yes, your CCW would be revoked for your next three lifetimes.
Nothing illegal...

If he worked where I work, he would have to tie it to himself for a week.[ROFL2]

I remember in Basic I set my weapon down in the shower.
Tiffany and I were tied together until the day before graduation.

Whoops. Duct tape can fix that :)

Which isn't bad, unless its your 60 gunner ... who also happens to be a 4' 9" female.
Of course Lt Meinschine was only 5' even so he liked to pick on those shorter than him :)
No, that's not acceptable in the least. I'm not holding them to a higher standard either because this isn't a mistake that I would make. I guess I'm one of the few who thinks when it comes to firearms there's no room for errors such as this.
For those saying 'Eh, mistakes happen' what would you saying if some kid had grabbed that rifle, pretended to shoot it and as a result spray a crowd of innocent passers by and killed/injured a handful of people? My guess is you'd be screaming how the irresponsibility may have caused the anti-2nd crowd to more closely scrutinize your gun rights and how it called negative attention to 'assault rifles' or guns & gun owners in general. I'm not the type of person to look at this sort of carelessness as 'just a bad day' only because the outcome didn't kill anyone. The fact is it COULD have resulted in something serious which is good enough for me. We don't cite drunk drivers w/DUI whenever they plow into a car of innocent people so why is this any different? Personally, I don't like having firearms out of my possession that aren't locked in a safe so I can't see myself doing this and I don't think it should be excused. He didn't leave a coffee mug on the back of his squad car. This is the exact kind of irresponsibility that gives the anti-crowd's arguments legs and the act shouldn't be excused simply because he has a badge or because nobody was hurt.

Sorry Byte, should have known better. Wasn't my intent to start that type of thread, more just a 'wow...gun safety 101' thought.

my statement was one of aggravation and spite more than anything.

You weren't talking about my post... were you? I'm usually the first one to defend LEOs on forums so I would hardly call me a cop basher. I would be saying this if it were a cop, a teacher or an unemployed person as well. I'm just calling it the way I see it regardless of the profession. It's irresponsible, plain and simple. No excuses.

Oh, ok. I understand. I wasn't aware of another thread (or was I?) and there weren't all that many posts in the negative in this thread so I just narrowed it down to myself but your posts didn't quite seem like it was focused towards me.

the one about the cop giving a "lawful order" for the woman to stop recording from her property.

Ah, I see. I happen to have my own set of beliefs regarding the filming (audio, video or both) of public places and am not sure how some are able to pass laws against it just because it's of law enforcement. If they are doing their job properly it shouldn't matter and likely wouldn't even be made public or have any sort of reaction unless they were indeed doing something they shouldn't be doing. In many situations capturing the event may be a citizen's only defense against a LEO who may be abusing their power or simply not know how to do their job. I can see why a dept doesn't feel we should be able to do that but that doesn't mean that's the way it should be.
I digress.
The rifle in question here even has a sling.. there's truly no reason it should be laying anywhere other than safely locked away when not being used. If that were my rifle it would be slung or secured... no reason to have it any other way. I don't make it a habit of holding anyone to any sort of standard I myself don't adhere to. If only more people thought that way...
Pardon my french,
but jeasus H fucking christmas on a pogo stick, my thread was closed?
so much for discussion and debate. you're allowed to speak your mind, just as long as you're not too critical of police.
stenz is right, people here (most notably ME) like to bitch about LEOs.
I bitch about all injustice. and maybe from your side of the badge, shitting on the constitution and conducting revenge activity isn't that big of a deal, but from a citizen's perspective it's pretty fucking infuriating.
when I see shit like what they pulled in NY, it evaporates all of my care and concern for the "good guys" out there doing the job.
Those cops in the video are a doing exactly what the second amendment was put in place to prevent. eventually the people will have had enough.
it's a good thing they're militarizing the police force, because they're gonna need all the help they can get.
EDIT: this post does not mesh well with my sig line.
