Good for him.

Is it realistic that a solider with a prosthetic can actively serve?

Yes, but odds are unless they go through very stringent testing they probably won't get into a combat arms duty like infantry, they'll more likely become desk ridden. I've seen only a few extremely rare cases where they'll allow an amputee to serve in a combat role (such as a Vehicle Commander- guy sitting shotgun in a truck- if they can evac the vehicle in the time allowed for standards) but it's usually in the rear where they keep them.

With his very effective monopod he could probably remove that bipod.

Very cool pic. Great example of the "Never Quit" attitude.

These guys serve everywhere throughout the Army (not sure about the Marines). In Afghanistan, we had an EOD bomb tech with a prosthetic leg. He put on the suit and diffused bombs - it was incredible. With the growing number of amputees still wanting/willing to serve, you can find them everywhere from Battalion Commanders, Command Sergeants Major and even down at the company level.

I think it is awesome that they continue to serve when others whine and cry about why we are overseas.

They should let him serve as long as he is capable to do the job.

Just my opinion.
