View Full Version : An OH SH*T moment today.

I was carrying today, as usual, while taking the wife shopping. After a trip to Sportsmans and a few other places, the wife wanted to go to Wally World so we went.
After about a 1/2 hour there, we walked down the frozen foods section, and happened to glance at something inside behind one of the glass doors.
And what do you think I saw ? I saw my reflection in the glass and fund that the tail of my cover shirt was tucked in between my IWB holster and body clearly exposing the top of the slide and the entire grip on my carry gun !
I don't know how long my shirt had been this way, possibly since I left the house, but no one said anything or acted strange around me, is it possible that not a single soul noticed ?
I guess the morale of this story is either : Make sure that when you are CC'ing to be sure that your firearm is concealed. Or : That the general public as a whole is very unobservant.

both... Fanny packs always raise a chuckle, but never raise an eyebrow.

Your wife didn't notice?

I would believe that people are oblivious to what is going on around them. I carry a full size 1911. There are times when my pistol shows through or "prints" with a t-shirt covering it, and nobody notices. Takes a little bit to get used to, and with time I have become more comfortable with it.

Unless I am carrying where I am not supposed to I don't even worry about it anymore. I used to but after 10 years of packing and never being questioned I have learned most people don't pay attention and those that do are fellow ccw's that are seeing what you are carrying.

I also carry a 5" 1911 and have had this happen, usually when bending over or getting in/out the car. I try to keep the shirt tail tucked in now. No one ever noticed it exposed, or if they did didn't make a fuss.

I always make it a point to know where my shirttail is and make sure my CCW is covered up, because I'M the poor bastard that you'd see on the evening news receiving the latest clubbing from the po-po.

What's AIWB?

What's AIWB?

Appendix - Inner Waist Band. About 10:30-11 o'clock through 1-1:30. Easiest to conceal cause of your natural body lines, least chance of being discovered (someone can easily discover your weapon by accident when giving a hug, for example, if carrying on the hips or back. The only people getting that close to the AIWB area of your body when hugging probably know you well enough to know its there), and most importantly... fastest draw.

Sounds like a method best for skinny young fellers, not us fat old guys. 3:00 is best for me, I have a shoulder issue that prevents going back farther than that (hard to reach back that way), and "belly issues" anywhere around the front. [Tooth]

Believe it or not, having a little more... tactical front padding... actually makes easier than it already is to conceal AIWB. Helps keep the grip from printing.
Would be helpful for your shoulder too. The reason it allows for the fastest draw is because it has the most direct drawstroke, meaning you just move your arm up and grab the grip on your way up... no reaching around, twisting, bending, and whatever else. Your shoulder doesn't need to move anywhere funny.

I used to open carry ALOT, and I would say 90% of people never even noticed it was there.

More people probably noticed than you knew about. I've overheard people asking each other questions like "I wonder what police department he works for?" when I've seen people open carrying. I think that as long as you look like you are not a "gang banger" or "bad guy" most people assume that you must be some type of LEO because nobody else would carry a gun out in the open - other than those of us that carry and say "cool, someone else is carrying here besides me - hey what is that he is carrying...". I've actually struck up a couple conversations with guys if I've seen them with a pistol that I've been thinking about getting to see what they think of it. [Coffee]

I don't care so much any more about what other people think about me carrying. I'm fairly careful about not printing, but what I am doing is legal and my right.

I too had a similar occurrence http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/showthread.php?t=40232 so I know the pucker felling that you felt. It did show me, however, that most people notice very little out in public.

Pistol Packing Preacher

One Sunday morning, while packing at church [what do you expect from “Pistol Packing Preacher”?], a short lady came and stood by my side. I stand 6’ 2” so most ladies are short. We chatted for a while and she stepped closer and gave me one of those ‘side hugs’. Her arm went around my back and her hand rested on my full size CZ. She did not flinch or pull back her hand. She continued to look forward and said… “Packing heat?”
How do you answer that… honestly?
“Guess so!”
She smiled and calmly sat down in the pew.

Heh.. before she started to carry..the gf would bust my balls if the breeze blew and she could 'see' my gun...

The only reason she'd even notice is she knew it was there and was looking.. I've had entire conversations w/ PD and .gov types who had no idea..

That all changed when she started carrying.. it took a few weeks till she got over the paranoia... Now I just have an excuse to put my hands on her ass when I hug her [Muaha]

Pretty much. Well, I guess I live in a different spot but no one seems to care here when I don't conceal.

I've taken off a sweater at work and had my shirt ride up to my chest while carrying. Carrying at work = instant firing. That will make your butthole pucker.

For the longest time, I thought I couldn't carry at work. Then my boss asked me why I am not carrying when I have a CCW. Took me by surprise.

We were talking about it. I work at a very gun friendly facility. I just didn't know I could carry at work.

I actually had a similiar time yesterday. I was washing my truck at the car wash by the house. Apparently without me paying attention my shirt had come up over my pistola. The owner walked over and just kinda pointed at his side and nodded at me. I looked and quickly covered it up. He just laughed at me brought me some free stuff and said thanks for doing business here.

I used to check that I was covered up so much that I realized it probably was making people wonder. That was when I first started carrying but now I have my system down and don't worry any more

There are a lot more people in Colorado with CCW than you would think. Hundreds of thousands I'm sure. I don't know how many actually carry day-to-day but it is almost a certainty that you're not the only one packing when you're out and about town doing your errands...and you never notice them either.

CCW is not as easily noticeable as other "exclusive" groups of people- for instance, not many could tell military (especially SF) in a crowd, I can just because I know what to look for. CC folks are harder because of the different walks of life they come from- such as the housewife I met the other day who packs a small beretta .380 either in her jeans or purse when wearing skirt/dress, I never would have been able to tell.

As soon as I get the funds, I'm going to be getting one of these, a ccw course, and then my permit.

Back from the dead!

I don't remember if this happened before, or after the post I quoted, but one time, at that same place of employment, I accidentally tucked my shirt in UNDER my CCW and walked out of the bathroom. I got about 10 feet and around the corner from the bathroom before I realized and ran back to the restroom as fast, and inconspicuously, as I could. Fortunately for me, I was working later than usual, and only the people on the late shift were still there, and the rest of the building had already gone home. That rest room is in the hall way right next to the lunch room for the entire building.

I spent a few weeks sitting in the front office of a collection center where i work recently in greeley. Some old fart, maybe a member here, came in two days in a row carrying what looked like an xd barrel outside the waist band with a shirt that barely covered it. Now what i mean by looked like an xd barrel is because each time he came in he would bend over at the counter in front of me and all i saw was barrel pointing at me [ROFL1]

I had an "oh shit" moment once...

I remember having this big long reply typed out for a thread... It was a good reply... Had everything to do with the topic of the OP. Then I saw the thread was from last year! I thought to myself, "Oh, Shit! Irving will be pissed!"

They're currently over hauling the employee manual to address a few issues we've had w/ employees that are no longer with us and company property.. no no the laptop was a gift.. I thought the phone was given to me... blah blah blah.. anyways as I pointed out we have no weapons policy.. Apparently, we're getting one and my job description is getting changed to work around the new policy.. lawyers are fun.. we're going to make a rule, then break it w/ a loop hole!

+1 ... I was in a Target store once, and was bending over to look at something and exposed my carry piece. My shirt rode up and my gun was in the wide open for everyone to see. A guy pushing a shoping cart passed behind me, and my wife told me that he looked right at my CCW and then went about his business.

Geez is your wife blind?? JK!! My gf is luckily very cool with my guns/carrying and I've asked her to tell me if she notices blatant printing. Her response was "honestly I really don't walk behind you, so I never see your back often". Which I guess is true, if you're always opening/holding the door for them, etc.

Since I've started carrying in late August, I've been paranoid about printing, so it's interesting to see people have learned to not get so worked up about it, realizing tht most people just don't notice it.
