View Full Version : I honestly don't know what to say...
So I got severely chastised by a friend of mine the other day, and unjustly so.
Here's the short version:
I listen to music that may not be deemed "Conservative" I guess... mainly it's because I don't have only country, all country on my iPod. A lot of it would be classified as "electronic" and "Jam band" type music (not to be confused with techno), and I also happen to like some of The Grateful Dead and String Cheese Incident. Along with it, I go to a lot of these concerts as well. So anyway, my friend invited me to go on a little "end of summer" camping trip with him from Sept 9-11, with our ending up at the Big Chili Cook-off in Evergreen on that Sunday. I already planned on doing the Chili Cook-off since my friend won the year before. But, I respectfully declined in his offer since one of my favorite bands (Sound Tribe Sector 9- don't judge based on the name, they're really good) is playing 2 nights at Red Rocks that weekend. He tore into me because of the "reputation" that STS9 has as hippie music with a big hippie following. He even had the nerve to call me a "Dirty hippie who supports Obama." I about told him he just lost a friend, and do realize that a lot of people who like that music are in fact hippies and d-bag liberals. But how do I tell him that just because I listen to a certain type of music that it takes away from my credibility as a freedom loving, gun toting, right-wing, good ol American boy? I honestly don't know what to say to this guy with his closed minded hateful speech.

Damn hippie music [Spank]
Forget him. You can't please everyone, just do want you want to and make sure you're happy with your decisions. Friends who tell you that you're dumb or whatever for liking something they don't, well they aren't your friend!!

Thanks Opie, problem is, this guy and I grew up together and have been friends for a long time. He got the same way when I went to another one of these "Hippie/druggie" concerts when he invited me to go see some country star at the Grizzly Rose. Although I would have declined anyway since I hate the 'Rose with the fiery passion of a 1000 suns.

Well, if the guy doesn't know you well enough to know where your views are, not really that much of a friend in my eyes. Therefore, if they're not close, fuck em. If someone is going to be categorized by what they listen to, I think a lot of people would be off put. I don't see how someone could pigeonhole another on basis of music just because of their music tastes. Like personally I might be blasting heavy metal while driving down the road, be listening to country at work, and coffee house type tunes on the way home, I must be violent, a redneck, and hippie I guess. Using music to categorize someone is retarded.
On a lighter note an old joke (no offence intended, just funny)
What did the hippies say when the weed ran out?
"Damn, this music sucks"
Anyone who would judge you by the music you listen too isn't worth your time. Move on and find a new friend. In America we have the freedom to express ourselves as we see fit.

Seriously, I'm 55, and he'd probably shit himself if he knew what was on MY iPod! I personally can't stand 99.9% of most country music.

Yep, and I am still considering using that time to get just a bit more drunk in the parking lot before going in... I haven't listened to Snoop Dogg since like 1997.

I think it's a waste of breath to categorize someone based on what they listen to. I have an incredibly wide selection of music. One of the members on this site has to put up with it all the time. If your friend doesn't know enough about you to know that you don't support Obama, and then throw you in with the hippies/libs/Obama supporters just because a certain tune sounds good to you, then he's obviously the one with the problem. You don't have to prove anything to anyone. People who truly know you, should know what you are and what you stand for.

A) How's it feel to be labeled a libtard? Lol
B) F*#k the idea that music is tied to political leanings. WTF? That is right up there next to Science has a Liberal bias.
Seriously, that's some stupid a$$ s33t right there. Don't all of you know at least one middle aged white guy working a 9 to 5 job who pulled the lever for McCain... and loves him some gangster rap? Knows all the lyrics?
The idea that conservatives listen to country and liberals listen to.. I don't know, anything but country? is derp worthy.
H.
PS, I saw STS9 at Red Rocks last year -- was my first time at Red Rocks. Is that mostly a Colorado band?
People think I'm a wierdo because of all the Frank Zappa in my stash. Possibly one of the best guitar players and composers to ever live, but his music definitely requires an open mind.
Does all of this guys friends just listen to country/western music ?
I seriously doubt it. If this guy is really a friend, this wouldn't matter to him what type of music you listen to. If he dosen't understand that, he isn't much of a friend. Then tell him to kiss off.

There are only two kind of people in the world, those that love country music and those that are afraid to admit it.

Now you've gone and done it; I've got that song Catholic Girls running through my head. Some odd stuff coming out of the Mothers.
What were we talking about? [Coffee]

I have a friend who, when inebriated enough, can do really amazing renditions of both Snoop Dogg and AC/DC.

I never though about tying ones views to the music they listened to. I do understand some of the stereotypes and some has merit but just because you listened to a group/song/style and this "Friend" went off?
He should know you better than that. I grew up during a great time for music and there are still new bands that impress me. I have been known to jump from many styles in a day. I have my favorites but like some of everything but Classical and that is because I was made to play it for many years and I wanted to play something else.[Coffee] And FZ rocks. I have most of the albums including the box set "Shut up and play your guitar".
NEVER let someone judge you for the music you listen to. I don't know about anyone else here, but I couldn't give two shits about a band's political views if their music is good. Sometimes it's annoying when they put it in their music, but it's not that tough to ignore.

When did we become "that country"?
Why does EVERYTHING have to be about politics?
Sheesh.
If to remain a conservative I have to become a fan of country musick, screw it ... I'll turn in my guns and buy an effin' Prius.

+1
Loan $20 to a friend and never see them again, well, you got off cheap as the saying goes.
My neighbor's wife and I are almost polar opposites in regards to politics. They have a key to my house, I share the fish I catch with them, they share their garden surplus.
Politics be damned, true friends can still be friends.

Guess I just don't get it. I thought that's what friends are for. I have a buddy who admitted to me that he often watches the cooking channel. So now I constantly bust his chops about being gay. Also, giving each other the middle finger or calling each other an assortment of colorful names is pretty common place. Heck, if i found out he listened to any "non-conservative" music I would probably make fun of him too.
Of course, I would never call him a liberal or an Obama supporter..... them's fightin' words. [Coffee]
The Grateful Dead f**king sucks!!!! Yup, I said it...
Doesn't really matter what kind of music you listen to, but your money supports what those people support. I TRY to think about that when I spend my money, but at the same time I am not going to live my life worrying about what will piss people off.
I'm glad you told him how you feel but I think losing a great friend you grew up with because he is pissed about you hanging out with hippies instead of in the mountains with your friend is a bit extreme.
I would at least talk to him and tell him to get over the kind of music you are in to and that he should know what your values are. But if I saw my best friend that I grew up with doing that stuff I would definitely say something to him.

Ask him if he ever had a terminally ill dog, if he would...
a) Throw it down a hole and shoot it in the face 100 times.
or
b) Take it to a vet.

Not sure exactly what you're getting at but I'll give that a shot.
Well update, since our last little tiff I told him to go watch "Shut Up And Sing", a documentary about the whole fallout from Natalie from the Dixie Chicks after she said what she said about Bush... funny how freedom swings both ways but people get so bent out of shape because someone has a freaking opinion. Ready... I'm going to get on national TV and say something along the same lines as the Dixie Chicks, do you think I'll get banned from radio stations?
"I'm ashamed that our President is from America." (Natalie said she was "ashamed that the president [Bush] was from Texas." I say I'm ashamed that our president [Obama} is from America (kind of)).

Honest to God I can't see the allure of the Grateful Dead ... it has to be all the drugs.
So as for Ann, that's two things I strongly disagree on (the first is Chris Christie).
