...than when I checked my bank balance this morning, only to find that some fucking asshat scumbag cocksucker had hacked my debit card and drained my (joint) checking account. [Rant1] Just spent the last hour on the phone with the bank, getting my card cancelled and reissued. Writing a formal dispute letter and faxing it to them so that we can be credited back the stolen funds. Thieves should be spit roasted over a slow fire...

Ouch, sorry to hear that, man... Happened to me a few years back.

Interesting tidbit about my experience: most of the charges were in the middle east...

First Bank was awesome though, and credited my money back within a day or so

That REALLY sucks!! Hope you get all your money back. I've had my credit card # stolen 4 times and the thieves really spent a lot of money fast!

Did you see where the charges took place? My brother had his card # stolen and found out the perp was in Englewood (I know, close right)... since he works at the bank that issued his card he wanted them to call every time the person tried to charge something so he could try and track them down- .45 to the melon teaches many a lesson to thieves!

Damn, that really sucks! I remember I took some clients to PT's about 10 years ago (yea, I know, that what they were in to) and left my debit card for the bar tab and forgot to get it back. The asshats there managed to spend $10K of my money the next day and of course the club couldn't find the card. Fortunately we tracked it down to who did it and they went to jail. I hope you get your guy!

I have no worries about the money, that's covered under the bank's policies. What boils my butt is the time and hassle of getting a new card, filing paperwork, etc. I am trying to track down the miscreant now through one of the websites he purchased stuff through (mostly computer gaming hardware). I am guessing that without a subpoena, I'm probably out of luck. If I can track the little fucker down, I will see to it that they spend as much time as possible in a federal prison, where they can meet all kinds of new friends... [Rant1]

Sorry to hear this and I hope you get it all worked out!

Let us know how it goes getting things refunded, and if you don't mind, let us know what bank you are with. I know alot of the big banks out there are recently redrawing their lines on what they will and won't do in the event of identity theft. If your bank comes through for you, I might be switching banks soon.

That sucks man. At least you got your funds back. I never use my debit card any more just for this reason. It's for physical ATM withdrawals only. If my bank didn't make it such a hassle to turn it into an ATM-only card, I would. A real CC you just report the fraud and all is well. No funds lost. I am not down with direct drafts out of my bank account.

That really blows.

A friend of ours had her purse stolen when they broke into the car
charged had over $2000 in walgreens gift cards bought in under 30 minutes.
They were former employees because at each one they parked where the cameras couldn't get a look at the plates. They had faces on camera but the cops said they couldn't do anything

Sorry to hear Jim! Hope you get it resolved soon, and I hope you get some cooperation from the po-po.

Happened to me also, I'm sure it was a co-worker of mine. I'd bought something over the phone and I'm certain this dick overhead the call and wrote it all down. Then he tried to use my card to finance his pussy-chasing endeavors. This guy's life revolves around getting laid, and all the charges were for dating services, wine baskets, flowers, lingerie, teddy bears, Skype accounts, stuff like that.

US Bank called me in less than 24 hours to ask about the odd charges, and we immediately closed my card and cancelled all the transactions, so I wasn't out any money. But the Denver PD flat out refused to help, "they dont have the resources to pursue piddly shit like this, and since the bank covered the costs it's up to the bank to press charges". I even filed a complaint with the mayor's office and got a call from the head of Detectives, and he still said they couldn't help. Douche even asked me if I had video proof of him doing it!

And none of the vendors he used the card at would give me shit for info. Sure seems to me like a detective could get the info from them pretty quickly about who placed the orders and where it was to be shipped. That right there would identify the culprit. But nooooo, too much trouble, we don't have the manpower. Been almost 2 years and I'm still pissed. And I have to work with the cocksucker every day. Manager won't fire him either, ain't got no proof.

Godalmighty, what kind of scumbags do you works with? Man, big cities, you can friggin have that shit. God I hate shitty people.

You could try to 'set him up' again, with a false card, that only was used over THAT phone, (fake phone call) to a friend. So you would narrow it down to...HIM.. But I think it has to be over 3000.00 for a felony.

Hey,BTW.... where does he get his sweet meet?

Similar thing happened to my parents. They had a CC that had some odd charges of a few dollars. Apparently these scumbags will test your card for a few dollars first then later slam an clean your account! Keep an eye out on your statement.

Colorado is $500 for a felony, but these types of cases rarely go to prosecution based on one instance of theft. If the person who stole or used the access device (debit card in this case) is working with others, then this will be something that the bank's security department may package up for either the FBI or the US Secret Service to see about federal prosecution. Many local departments have very small resources dedicated to this type of "white collar" theft. If they do have someone available, they are often overwhelmed and have to prioritize their efforts.

The victims in these types of cases are the banks and all of their customers who wind up having the cost passed along to them.

It's sad, but true; your odds of getting away with stealing $100,000, through bank fraud are much higher than stealing $50 from the local stop and rob. There are more uniforms than detectives, and the guy who sticks a gun in a cashiers face will get more attention than the person who shoulder surfs a few credit card numbers.

Thieves suck. I hope they catch the person who screwed your morning over. [Beer]

I have had my card for years and never had any problems. This year I got compromised twice this year. Within 3 months of each other. One charge was in Beijing for $250 and another time was in Las Vegas for $.89 cents, most likely a trial run to see if it would go thru.

Identity thieves, computer hackers/virus creators, Social Security/Welfare/Disability/Section 8/etc. cheats, Ponzi scammers and all other types of "white collar" criminals. Plus all the regular violent lowlifes. Can't we heave 'em all into a volcano or something? Would that really be so bad?

Sorry to hear. I turned in my debit card for a ATM only card a year ago. Now all I use is a credit card and pay it off every month. Damn thieving bastards.
