Hey all,

I live in Massachusetts right now but am getting ready to move out to Colorado, specifically the Fort Collins - Loveland area by the end of the year. I own a number of firearms and my question is if there is anything I need to do before bringing my guns into the state to remain legal. Will I need some sort of permit/license etc etc.

If anyone could give me some info on the process I would appreciate it greatly

Thanks

As long as you have enough for everyone on the forum you can bring them.

According to state statute # 456.234-BC the only requirement is that you shoot them with me..[Beer]

I live in Windsor which is just next door to Fort Collins/Loveland.

Welcome to freedom!

I forgot to add that I moved from IL to CO 4 years ago and I was blown away by the gun culture here. Its absolutely awesome!!!

One thing to add:

I doubt you have any class II or III firearms coming from MA, which are both legal in CO. However, you need to fill out the federal forms to move them across state lines.

Colorado is also a shall issue state for a concealed carry permit...get that as well.

Thanks guys I absolutely cannot wait to leave this state...

I couldn't either, lived there twice in my life, the US Govt forced me to. Good folks, great geography but I despised the state socially and politically...still do.

If you get home-sick you can always cruise over to Boulder or into Denver to find some of the "Mass-hole mind-set" (****ed-in-the-head libtards) but beyond that...this is still the real-world man.

Good call on your part to perform the advance due diligence re: CO firearms laws but it bothers me greatly that any American even has to ask this. Just get here...life is far, far better...and bring us some lobsters...

Welcome...

Gun permit? License? I don't understand...

Everyone forgot one little detail. All firearms must be inspected by me and I collect one as a fee. Thanks for your cooperation

Sounds more like "Oba'Mao in da' hood" with another redistribution scheme.

Really? Well, I'm like...in need. When can I expect a "donation"?

The only real requirements are that you change your Northeast mindset that has been drilled into you(it is not your fault it is the liberal's in Massachusetts fault) that you need to ask permission from the government to exercise your 2nd Amendment rights and once you get here run copious amounts of ammo through your guns. You should also have a license and/or permit burning party when you get here. I live near Loveland so if you ever need a shooting partner look me up.

on a serious note from me....you can shoot in the national forest...but take all your **** with you that you took in. DO NOT leave trash.
this is a serious and sore subject for a lot of people because we have a ton of morons who leave all their trash after they shoot it.

so please, respect the forest and don't leave any trace.

A good place to start.

High points: Shall Issue CCW, No registration of guns, no registration of owners, very few restrictions on firearms or ammo types (except in the People's Republik of Denver), no waiting periods, no restrictions on private sales (other than those in Federal law), open carry legal in most parts of the state.

Congratulations on your escape![Beer]

Completely understand that. The national parks/forests, nature in general is one of the biggest reasons I'm moving out there. Hoping to get a job that has me out there everyday eventually

The one thing I didn't see mentioned, is check the state regulations on transporting firearms for the states that you will be crossing. There are a few that you may not want to spend the night in and obey all traffic rules while crossing, don't give them any reason to pull you over other than your out of state plates.

Otherwise, an early welcome to Colorado and don't forget to stop at the state line and take your picture standing next to the Welcome sign and post it up here.

Make sure when you get here to make a stop at Jensens in Loveland and see what you have been missing out on. Shoot me an IM when you get in town, ill show you some of the local spots to shoot. Have a safe move.

Go around Illinois if you possibly can. I lived in Indiana for a couple of years and hated going across the border into Illinois because they are gun Nazis.

I did it last year... From Central Mass to Broomfield. One of the better things I've done in my life. If you have your LTC in Mass, your training from Mass will work here in Colorado if you're going to get your CCW.

There are no permits to own, no permits to buy, FTF transactions are done with a handshake, no FA-10 forms to fill out.

That said, Colorado has it's warts too. Denver and Aurora have assault weapon bans like in Mass, and Boulder is just like going to the People Republic of Cambridge. Taxes are higher here (I don't know what FC/Loveland's tax rate is, so I may be wrong, but Broomfield is 8.25%) than in Mass and home prices in Fort Collins/Loveland are about the same as Matapoisett. That said, they don't pay as well here, so your dollar doesn't go as far. Overall, "they" can't drive in the snow (although "they" say it's the texas and california people). And although there are plenty of us here, trying to find the red sox /patriots/bruins on TV is next to impossible.

Now that I've said the bad, the good is that it's beautiful here... 300 days of sunshine. If you stay out of Boulder and Denver, the people are friendly. New Glocks are $500, and if class 3 stuff is to your liking, there are plenty of places to buy them. You can shoot on public land, except the VAST MAJORITY of people are slobs that don't clean up after themselves, and many have no clue on gun safety.

Just enjoy the first time you go to a gun store, find a firearm you want to buy, and leave with it right then and there (depending on the CBI speed). Well, I guess technically you can't carry it out of the store with you, but they walk you to the door with it![Tooth]

You are a little misinformed mate. There is NO assault weapon bans in Colorado. The only "ban" Denver has is no rifle mags over 20 rounds, semi-automatic shotgun with a magazine capacity of 6 or more rounds and/or a folding stock

There was an assault weapons ban in Denver before but CRS 29-11.7-103 made it so only the State and regulate what types of guns we can own.

Here is what that CRS says:

29-11.7-103. Regulation - type of firearm - prohibited.

A local government may not enact an ordinance, regulation, or other law that prohibits the sale, purchase, or possession of a firearm that a person may lawfully sell, purchase, or possess under state or federal law. Any such ordinance, regulation, or other law enacted by a local government prior to March 18, 2003, is void and unenforceable.

Source: L. 2003: Entire article added, p. 653, § 2, effective March 18.

can do that in Mass already (actually faster than in Colorado, because the 4473 only takes a couple minutes verses the hour+ I've waited here)

Enjoy the first time you walk into a store and can buy anything on the shelf and not worry about it being "Mass Compliant". . . or not throwing perfectly good mags in the trash because they hold more than 10 rounds. . . or that flash supressor that you wanted on your new AR, feel free to buy it. . .or not have to pin a stock. . .or keep a bayo lug. . .
