so i bought a 5r a while back and have been trying run some down the tube as much as i can but haven't really had the chance. i went back to TN two weeks ago and sighted in with the old man. shot hornady 168 gr. a-max. shot beautifully....today went to cherry creek (don't judge me)[NoClue] ,and shot 168 gr. nosler match and my shot groups opened up considerably? i had 1 box left of the a-max so i shot it thinking maybe it was me but they tightened back up. i was surprised to see such a difference at 100yds. is there any other ammo i should try?

Sorry for the dumb-ass questions... I'm still new to this too.
you're shooting a .308, right?
What is the twist on your barrel?
What kind of groups were you getting and how many shots are you making in a group?

Pics would help out... don't worry about getting some sh*t about it... we only get better [Beer]

yep it's a .308 sorry i didn't specify, it's a 1:11.25 twist.
i was getting sub moa @ 100 yds with the a-max in 5 shot groups, i was all over the place with the nosler. i was shooting at a 6" birchwood casey shoot-n-c target could barely keep it in the target with the nosler.

I have the same rifling on my 22" barreled GAP.
Try some of'em 168gr Blackhills.. I had some 168gr hornady handloads my buddy makes for me and at 100 yards I got the same results as the Blackhills
On the right hand corner BH (Blackhills) 10 shot groupings... this was pretty fast shooting... If I took my time and know how to shot straight I'm pretty sure the groups would've been tighter. The shots in the center was with some 175gr custom handloads my buddy makes for me.

all the nice stuff you can get online... I haven't came across any of this stuff here locally yet...
My buddy does handloads and will break down all the components and brands with a ballistics chart to go with the rounds as well. I can give you his number if your really interested in trying some out... and he is located in Parker which is nice too.. PM me for more info.[Beer]

I had a 5-R and it would shoot whatever I fed it under MOA. Handloads that is.

I'd say it's time to start rolling your own.

Have you checked the screws? Optics and stock? Is the barrel broken in-clean? Are the groups bigger or just a higher point of impact? (altitude difference). Probably Ammo.

first 20 rds i cleaned after every shot with minimal fowling, cleaned every three after that. all per my pops. the groups were bigger, i think it was the ammo. i went back to the a-max and they tightened back up.

I have seen/experienced this 1st hand many times in different rifles using Nosler bullets. I swore them off many years ago and haven't used them since. I do know that many people love Nosler bullets and have great results, particularly the ballistic tip bullets.
BTW MSRP on Nosler 168 Match ammo is $27/box per their web site. If someone is banging you for $35 you need to quit buying from them.

I too have had great luck with the accuracy of Federal Match Ammo, but don't like how dirty Federal ammo shoots. It gets guns dirty fast.
I've heard great things also about Black Hills, but no 1st hand experience.

If you can't roll your own and want to shoot on a budget:
I perfer Hornady Match (both A-Max and HPBT) (168 grain)
If accuracy is priority over price: (around $50/box)
Laupua Scenar 167 grain HPBT- Scarey accurate in everything
A quality rifle like a 5R will group this ammo under 1" at 300 yards.

Barrel break in is a waste of time just shoot the thing . Cleaning is also over rated , clean the action to ensure function and don't touch the bore until accuracy starts to go away . The only time I'll change from that is if it gets wet . There are many instances where a barrel was damaged more from cleaning than shooting .

If it shoots the A Max and not the Nosler's the answer to that is simple , don't buy anymore Nosler's .

Try Federal and Black Hill's 175's , if it won't shoot either of those I'd be surprised . To shoot the number of rounds needed to get proficient unless your independently wealthy reloading is the only solution .

my family leaves in the very southeast corner of tennessee and finding .308 was almost impossible. i found three boxes of the a-max and one box of the nosler so i didn't have a choice. i had the box of nosler left over from the trip. trust me i won't buy it again.

I have a Remington 700 AAC-SD that really likes 168gr and 175gr SMK BTHP bullets and Berger VLD bullets in a similar weight.

Take a look at this site http://www.setpointammo.com/

One option for picking your components and working up a load for your rifle. Prices are considerably cheaper than some of the custom ammo manufacturers.

The easiest and most comprehensive thing I can recommend on that is Glen Zediker's book on reloading for competition .
