View Full Version : Something I learned Yeasterday
When a 2" tug strap snaps it can hurl a 3/4" clevis about 35 yards, when slingshoted by a 10.5mm dynamic rope, with enough force to go through a metal strand fence.

Glad it was a fence and not someone's head.

ouch, that could have been painful.
my dad had a buddy who died from a similar situation. the strap snapped, the hook or clevis(whatever he was using) came through the cab of the tractor. hit him right in the head.

if winching or pulling someone or something out. always lay a coat or heavy blanket or like item on the chain, strap or rope. it usually eliminates this kind of thing from happening.

Coming from the [rock]crawling world... tow straps/cables can kill. Make sure people are behind decent sized trees and chit or at a safe distance if you need to pull or winch. It helps of you drape a heavy coat over the line, absorbs the shock when it snaps.
I've seen a tow strap snap at the rear vehicle, shoot forwards and the hook at the end end up in the passenger seat of the front vehicle.

That I did not know
In before pictures of tow hooks through windshields and head rests.
I didn't say anyone was hurt or in harms way. Yet, blankets/coats will dampen winch lines. I only use winch rope anymore.
This situation involved pulling a tree in a specific direction, using a moving truck. A winch would not take in line fast enough. Ran the line from the tree, through an anchor point (tug strap and clevis), to the truck. The truck was angled off to the side of the fall line with a safe run out.
I have seen winch hooks shot through back and front windows. This was the first equipment failure I have ever had. Everyone walked away with nothing more than a good story to tell.

Coupling straps together is scary just for what youve seen now. 2 solid point, and one strap, strap itself should fail, just falls to the ground, much like cutting winch rope. Clevis etc connecting 2, can be very scary.
FWIW, done exactly what you are talking about, with dropping trees, works well usually. Just have the clevis close to the tree trunk and its much safer.

Exactly. And put it closer to what you are pulling. That way it something snaps, it is longer than half-way for the strap/chain/cable to get back to you.
Or use synthetic line.
I'm so disappointed, thought this was going to be a joke thread about yeast infections

You ought to see when a 1" winch cable snaps while recovering a tractor trailer that went off of Fremont Pass does when it let's loose. 8" trees were nothing.
Spooky shiite.

You should see what an arresting gear cable on a bird cage will do when snapped.

was recovering a M911 (Osh Kosk) from a lake in Ft Bragg that has been singing all night.
the cable popped and fell 3 trees and a Duece and a half...
When I was in the Navy. I seen a 3 inch mooring line stretch to about half its size. I was hiding behind the gun mount.
