VERY BAD NEWS!!!!!

First off, I can't understand why we've not heard or seen anything on this in ANY of the media...

For those of you who came out to assist me with this event, you surely remember Lacy who was shooting at the opposite end of the shooting line from where you guys were set up (was down there with the guy who had the AK47 with the bump-fire stock). I've known Lacy & her husband for 13 years. This is her:

https://fbcdn-sphotos-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/547189_3816435604752_1577996931_n.jpg

She's an all around beautiful (physically, spiritally, personality, etc.) woman with an amazing zest for life and an electric personality that you can't help but be in a good mood when around her.

I don't know any details as to exactly what happened or how bad of shape she is in, but yesterday she was "badly burned in an accident at the range". According to info I read on her Facebook page, she suffered Second Degree burns. Again, I don't know where the burns were received or how much of her body was burned. She is currently in a burn unit somewherew in the Denver area and (again, according to a post on her Facebook page) the doctors want her there at least 2 weeks. I'm told that she is an emotional wreck right now.

Mike, the guy with the bump-fire, was burned too but I know no details about his state except he supposedly isn't as bad as Lacy.

I don't know what range she was using when this occured but she usually at Dragonman's. My guess is that they had Dragonman's flamethrower out and something went very wrong.

Lacy is MAJORLY into shooting and has been working hard to enhance her skills as well as her firearms collection. While not YET a member of this site, she's one of us!

Lacy's husband is former 10th Special Forces and is currently in Uganda (I think it was Uganda) attempting to get some contracts with the government over there. He's supposed to come back to the US/CO on Sunday.

So, for those of you who are inclined to do so, please keep Lacy in your thoughts and prayers - both for her physical as well as her emotional/spiritual recovery.

Fatal Incident at Dragonman's Shooting Range

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office says a 51-year-old person has died during an incident at the Dragonman's shooting range located on 1200 Dragon Man Drive.
Film crews were on the scene filming a show. Deputies say an unknown ordnance was deployed and hit the victim. They are not giving any other details about what the film crew was doing when the incident happened.
On Wednesday, another person associated with that filming crew was burned. That person was treated and released.
Investigators with the ATF and EPSO are on the scene.
Deputies are not calling this an accident yet, but they do say it is under investigation.
The person has not been identified. An autopsy is pending. Investigators say that person is believed to be from Colorado Springs.

I read the article and chalk the lady getting burned to a completely irrelevant incident where the person was well enough to drive and then be immediately erased after treatment... Article fluff that has no bearing on the shooting incident.

We will have to wait until details come out about the shooting incident. Was a whole lot of "unspecified" in that article.

The "good" news is that if both incidents were related to filming the range's liability goes way down. They're supposed to have their own safety personel and look after themselves.

Still, it's very sad.

MATT STEINER (http://www.gazette.com/reporter-profile/matt-steiner-1650)
THE GAZETTE
A special effect designed to close a television show ended in tragedy at an El Paso County shooting range, the businesses owner said Friday.
El Paso County Sheriff's detectives were at the Dragonman's shooting range Friday morning investigating the fatal accident that happened Thursday evening as a television crew worked to film an episode of an unnamed cable show focused on military (http://www.springsmilitarylife.com/) vehicles at the business east of Colorado Springs.
Deputies haven't named the woman who died, but the proprietor of Dragonman's, Melvin Bernstein identified the victim as his wife, 51-year-old Terry Flanell.
Bernstein said he, Flanell and three other family members were on the range as crews worked to film them walking through a haze of smoke. But the smoke bombs used for the show detonated, he said, flying through the air like rockets.
Bernstein said the flying debris missed others in the group, but hit his wife.
"They went right through her body, she didn't suffer or nothing," Bernstein said. "She just dropped."
Bernstein didn't name the production company, but said the show was slated for a 13-episode run on a cable channel focused on military topics.
Sheriff's office spokesman Sgt. Joe Roybal said deputies waited until daybreak to continue work that began shortly after the incident occurred during the filming of a national television show.
"It's difficult to process a scene when it's dark," Roybal said.
Bernstein said the smoke-filled shot was supposed to conclude the show, warping up eight days of filming at the range.
Thursday's death was the second accident in two days associated with filming at the shooting range east of Schriever Air Force Base. A woman who suffered burns Wednesday, was treated at Memorial Hospital and released, authorities said.
Foul play is not suspected in either incident.

On Wednesday, another person associated with that filming crew was burned. That person was treated and released.
Investigators with the ATF and EPSO are on the scene.

Again, they've got bad intel on Lacy! She may have been "released", but that was for a transfer to a Denver burn unit. To be honest, I don't know if she was even taken to a Colo Springs hospital at all or just transported directly to Denver.

What's going on is there re too many idiots out there. The RO's do a great job but can only see so much. I used to go out there a ton when I had the money and guns... But now there are too many idiots out there. I don't know what happened but I can guess it went something like, "Dude, they're filming over there!.... Watch this!"
I wish it were that simple, but the truth of the matter is that both incidents have occured at the hands of employees. They may THINK they know what they're doing, but even the super-trained Hollywood pyrotechnics technicians screw up some times and they're a hell of a lot better trained than the guys @ Dragonmans.

See my comment above about the lady being "well enough to drive herself to the hospital and getting released.

Mel's brother "Nitro Mike" was burned Wednesday but was able to drive himself to the hospital & was then released. Lacy wasn't as lucky.

Lots of careless behavior by the staff for the "entertainment value". All very tragic. I had read that the scene of Thursday's incident was "gruesome", and reading Mel's comment about the rocket going through his wife clearly meets that definition.

All very sad.

The pyro company that has been working on the Discovery set (last two shows season 1 and all of 2nd season) has not been out yet on this 3rd season. ASSUMING they were in fact filming for the Discovery show. I worked the last two shows - season 1... That said, they may have changed pyro companies because my boss had to set some safety rules that they didn't like. I just hope it's not the Discovery show.

I don't know Mel, but anytime someone dies in an accident like this I am pretty skeptical of decisions/carelessness involved. I have been involved with a decent amount of special effects over the last few years and know there was gross negligence on someone's part.

FREAK ACCIDENT: COLORADO WOMAN DIES WHILE FILMING TV SHOW AFTER GETTING HIT BY 150MPH SMOKE BOMBS

Terri Flanell, 51. (Source: KOAA)
A woman was killed Thursday in a freak accident while filming a cable television show at her husband’s Colorado shooting range.

Terri Flanell, 51, was hit by a pair of foot-long smoke bombs traveling at 150mph. The first bomb knocked her down and the second went through her neck and out her naval, killing her instantly, ABC News reported.

“They went right through her body. She didn’t suffer or nothing,” her husband Mel Bernstein told the Colorado Springs Gazette after the tragedy. “She just dropped.”

The foot-long bombs were being used for special effects during the pilot taping of a new show about military vehicles when they accidentally went off and went rocketing towards the television crew, Bernstein told ABC News. Sadly enough, the smokey sequence in which Flanell was killed was the last scene of the show.

“I’ve been running this rifle range for 30 years and no one’s got hurt, because it is very safe here,” Bernstein said. “Out of eight days of filming, it happened in the last 30 seconds, the last frame. And it happened to my wife.”

“All I wanted to do was lock up and go out to eat,” Bernstein said, referring to the moments before the accident.

The weaponized smoke bombs missed Bernstein by about four inches, he explained.

“They were so close to my face, and if they would’ve hit me, I wouldn’t be here talking to you today,” Bernstein added.

The Colorado Springs Gazette also reports that this is the second incident that occurred during the filming of the pilot. A woman was treated for burns at Memorial Hospital on Wednesday and was later released. The show was supposed to air in September.

Bernstein and Flanell had been married for 16 years and they owned the Dragon Man shooting range for 33 years.

Police are investigation and do not suspect foul play, however, Sheriff’s office spokesman Sgt. Joe Roybal said officers are not ruling anything out.

“She was the nicest lady you could ever meet and was very smart,” Bernstein said about his wife. “I lost my best friend.”

My info comes second-hand from my NRA instructor, a close friend of the Dragonman family who posed this question to Terry, because his students were asking him about the rumor of a felony conviction.

Terry told him that when Mel and Terry started the business, they agreed that he would run the motorcycle biz and she would handle the firearms side (I was photographing some of their firearms for NRA once when UPS delivered 15 Harley top ends to Mel's machine shop). At the funeral, it was mentioned more than once that she was the "brains" of the operation: it sounds like she was more tolerant of the paperwork- and computer-intensive nature of the FFL license.

Terry denied that Mel had any sort of record that would prevent him from having an FFL. I heard last week ... I believe from Mel ... they were working with BATFE to get all the licensing transferred to Mel.

First-hand, I know Mel to be a hard-working, generous and fascinating guy who has built a successful biz with his family out of nothing. He's always treated my friends and family very well, and he's never had trouble with the BATFE, that I know of. He told me that this is the first accident there in 30 years.

For me and my family and friends, we intend to return his and Terry's goodwill by continuing to support Dragonman's. I hope all reading this will consider doing the same; they could use the support.

Thanks.

I'm glad your experiences with him have been positive. First-hand, I know a far different side of Mel Bernstein, and so do hundreds, maybe thousands of other guys. And our experiences are way over on the negative side. Let him rebuild an engine for you.

There are also different kinds of felonies, violent and non. I personally know 2 people who had NON-violent felonies that now own guns, legally (4473'D ETC). They had to wait 10 years for their issues to be resolved, the state said 7 and feds 10 years before applying.
I've known Mel & Mike on & off since 74. Good bad indifferent, it all depends on your personal experience with them, people do change.
Regarding motorcycle rebuilding, when it was just MELvin working out of a 600sq ft shop, in NY, it was all GTG. Once he started bringing on help things went south.

I'm glad to hear that you've had good experiences with Mel over the years. I wish I could say the same.

My interactions with him have been limited, but about 30% of the times I've dealt with him, out of nowhere I've been the recipient of a nasty attitude and just flat out rude treatment. Because there was no reason for the attitude, those times have over-shadowed the times when I was treated like a customer/guest. While I continue to go to Dragonman's when the situation warrants it, I try to keep those visits to a minimum. I typically don't like to go where I'm not wanted.

He told me that this is the first accident there in 30 years.
Well, that statement totally discounts the accident they had the day before the accident that took Terry's life. I'd say the results of the Wednesday accident would be sufficient enough to take note of.

** UPDATE **
***********

Lacy was finally released from the burn center on Sunday and she is continuing her recovery at home.

While she'd still experiencing quite a bit of pain from her burns, the meds the doctors have provided have helped to mitigate the pain. Before the burn center would release her she had to demonstrate that she could change her own dressings without experiencing too much pain.

Her spirits are really good and she has a great outlook and can't wait to get back to shooting but her injuries are still taking a bit out of her so it won't be happening immediately.

Good news in my opinion.

Terrible set of events. Feel terrible for Terry and her family and hope for a speedy recovery of Lacy.

Not yet. I was thinking that I'd give her a call this weekend.
