This weekend I put about 800-1000 miles in two days just cruising around on my bike. Well Friday night out riding with my friends we ended up meeting up with about 20 other bikes who we just met. Smallest bikes were 600cc's but what really caught my eye (or ear) was three bikes; V-twins. There were two Honda SuperHawks/VTR1000's and one that really stood was a Honda RC51/RVT1000. The sound of that thing was just amazing! I have not had the chance to ride one yet but I am seriously considering getting rid of my CBR 1000RR and getting one. The sound that thing made could be heard over every other bike. Plus that thing was torque monster!

Anyone have actual experience owning a Jap V-Twin? I am really more concerned about the power difference between a 1000cc 4 cylinder to a 1000cc 2 cylinder.

I never had the chance to own a v twin. the RC51 looks WAY better then the superhawk to me, but they both sound great.

If I were to get back into sportbikes, I would go RC51 for sure..

That RC51 was just badass. The Superhawks sounded good but aren't much of a looker IMO. Even the SV650/SV1000 are not that appealing to me.

yeah i was never really into the half naked bikes (or whatever you call em lol)..

I had a pipe on my last 929.. it wasnt the standard squid yosh or something, but it was loud enough to set off car alarms.

the thing almost embarrased me at times lol... i never wanted to be the guy that was "whining" done the highway.. def going vtwin just for the sound next time.. lol

A good friend of mine had one of the first generation Vulcan 750s ... was the single most reliable bike he'd ever owned (and he's had a lot of bikes, Japanese, American and British). Was also significantly faster than the naked goldwing he had (back before they were the fashion).

That said if I were to get a V-Twin and I wanted a fast one I'd follow in my younger brother's footsteps and get a Ducati. His modified 851 is a frighteningly fast bike (second only to the 916 he had for a while).

I used to have a TL1000R that is basically the same bike as the RC51, just the Suzook version. Monster torque and tons of power up top. You can pick them up cheap too. They are both niche bikes. I do miss that v-twin boom though...

My old Yamaha Warrior. 1700 v-twin. Man, that thing was fun. Put out a ton of power even stock and it sounded incredible. Faster than an R1, and handles almost as well despite being a cruiser (has R1 suspension). Man I miss that bike.

All you guys are ever going to see is my tailight..........

Last guy that told me that lost his mc & money.

Any of the Asian hardley davidson look a likes are decent rides. They offer a lot aftermarket wise now than a few years ago. Sean over at family tire in windsor did some nice stuff to his and same for the kid behind me. You need to realize the asian v-twins are nothing you will make money on when trying to sell them. They are however a high performance low maintenance mc w/out needing to doo motor work to get there.
The beemers are screamers same for ducks, however the bmw will not hit you as hard in the wallet insurance wise as the duck will.
Stock r1100rt i had was easy to do 120+ w/out breaking a sweat. The R' series are very nice, but knowing you exhaust wise something you may not like.

Regarding the asian bikes like screwing a fat chick, fun but not being seen, who cares? At least you have something between your legs.

Not Jap bikes but I have a KTM Superduke 990 V-twin and my buddy has an RC8-R 1190 V-twin. I absolutely love them, great torque plenty on top for anything but maybe a REALLY high speed track (RC8-R has that covered too). The sound is way more "muscle" sounding than the high rev inlines for sure. Great bikes and great handling. No downside IMO.

If you want to hear beautiful, Ducati is the way to go. Absolutely awesome ride and the sound is just amazing.

But it is a Ducati that has its quirks...

I too had an TL1000R. Great bike but the unconventional rear suspension left alot to be desired. If you are looking at Japanese V-Twins, I'd go RC51....

Love my Diavel!

I work right down the road from you at the "Mother ship." When can I take the S1000RR for a spin [Luck] [Beer].

The reason why the RC51 is so appealing to me is because they are well under my price range and fuel injection is a must. I could sell my bike, buy an RC51 and still have some money left over. All I have ever owned is 4cylinders (R6, R1, ZX10R and now my CBR 1KRR). I'm just afraid that after owning 3 liter bikes that I won't feel the "snap back" factor when I hit the throttle.

Two entirely different styles of riding. the liter bikes are HP canyon carving bikes. The V-Twins (what ever brand you like) are CRUISERS. Get on go for a nice ride enjoy the day, see the sights.

So what you need to decide is do you want to stick with the crotch rocket crew or cruise?
BTW: You will end up with a different kind of lady, usually one who will not stiff you on RENT!!!!!!!

Well I did get to have a quick run with the RC51 and a Hayabusa from 0-70mph and all were pretty much even. I am sure in the top end (150mph+) things would have changed.

I've owned a 1998 Suzuki TLR that was beefed up (ported heads, full Yoshi headers, etc..) very forgiving on the track banging down on the gears powersliding into corners, and twisting the throttle out of'em which you have to be careful doing the same on an inline.
Twins will not have the top speed as a inline... but the twin will conquer diving in and out of corners.
... i don't think twins get any lighter either... so that's also something you got to consider.
either way... it is a different discipline of riding between twins and inline's... and always a blast.

but you know what..? This is what i'm aiming to get next year... [Tooth]

I have ridden both the RC51 and a Superhawk. The V twin is a torque monster compared to an inline 4. But both being Hondas they dont lose any top end. Remember the RC51 won the AMA and World Superbike championships. They were routinely the fastest bikes in the speed traps. If I had to pick 1 to ride all the time I would go with a Superhawk only because the riding position is not as cramped for me as the RC51 is.

Right now I am actually looking at a VFR800 as a next bike. V4. now that is an entirely different sweet sound.

That's until those bloody GSXR 1000's came out and dominated the class for many years straight.
During the reign of the RC51's and Duc's 996 the biggest inline's they were going up against were the GSXR 750's and I think Kawi had a 700 too... can't remember.
Still.. them RC51's are iconic machines... would I own one...? Hell yea! I'd drive the sh*t to hell and back [Coffee]

The ZX10R I had, had a factory slipper on it. Damn was that thing fun to slide into corners, no throttle blipping needed [Muaha].

It's time for a change and I am hoping one day I will lose the itch to keep riding streets (or at least ride them responsibly). My plan is to sell the 1KRR, get an RC51 and a dirt bike.

I had a friend that bought a Ducati Monster, and he said he wasn't that impressed with it. He took it in and complained, and they asked him how he rode it, where he shifted, what RPM's, etc. He told them and they said "oh no, you're not even close. Take it up to here, hang on tight, and twist it past this point on the tach".

Said he did that and sold the sumbitch as fast as he could. Guess it tried to leave him behind.

First off, I am not a sport bike guy. You guys are nuts.

But, if I were looking to get back on one, I would definitely be looking at some sort of V-twin. Being able to rip from stop light to stop light or power out of turns and corners is more important to me than being able to tear down the highway in traffic at 180 mph. I need usable torque more than I need horsepower.

Honda builds great bikes. I would go with the RC51 myself.

They are worth a look if you are considering a new bike.

And don't forget their 3 cylinder models that go from 675cc up to 2300cc, or in American speak that is 140 cubic inches between your legs.

Agreed! the I had a 675 as well, it was a gorgeous well made bike that handled like a slot car. Had great useable low end torque along with awesome high end. The triumph triple IMO is one of the greatest all time engines ever put in any bike. GOD I MISS MONEY!

Since you haven't made a purchase yet it's never to late to buy a Harley. :) If not a Harley a Victory is also a very nice option. I have a few buddies in the bike building business and they have ridden just about everything; they tell me that there is no better cruiser than a Victory.

I ride a newer Fat Boy. I've owned numerous metric bikes and they've all been fun but nothing compares to the Harley. You can have all the fun you want with your metric Hardley's but nothing compares to the feeling of hitting that start button and making the windows in your house shake.

Picked her up the day after I sold my bike. it showed up the same day I sold my CBR and it is in perfect condition. Absouletly clean. 11K on the odometer, -1/+2 gearing, Akrapovic Exhaust, PCIII, Dyno/professional mapped and tuned. He also threw in the original set of plastics (red and grey scheme) also in perfect shape. Runs like a cheetah on cocaine. It is stop light to stop light monster. I cannont explain how it just launches from stop lights. It's definalty a whole different animal compared to I-4 motors I am used to. It's fast and fun in different ways than my CBR 1000RR.

Took it canyon carving yesterday and it was blast, even with a passenger. Diving in and out of corners was a kick in the ass. I think what I love most about this is the sound. It sounds like nothing else on the road. Well without further delay here is some crappy cell phone pictures. [Beer]

Sweet ride! Makes me miss that big twin power and rumble to wake the neighbors up in the morning.
They always used to tell me they knew the weather was going to be good when they heard that BOOM-BOOM in the morning.

That's funny - I pulled up on my Buell the other morning, and my wife came out looking at the sky, saying she just heard "thunder". Love that sound.

Sweet ride! Congrats! You've experienced what we were talking about: torque vs, top-end! Light to light is a blast with a nice twin under you!

Enjoy & be safe,

Its definalty got more "usable" power for street riding. Hell a monkey can ride a motorcycle fast in a straight line, its the curves that seperates the boys from the men.

Fixed it for ya! [Tooth] [LOL]

So, what's gonna be your first upgrade on top of all the existing upgrades?

I really don't know honestly. Everything I wanted done to it is already there. It has some decent meats on it now but that will probably be the next "upgrade." I did order a speedohealer for it since the speedometer is way off right now. Hopefully that shows up quick so I actually know what speed I am doing.

Twins are a blast. Raced a TLR back in the days.
