Nope there's a fire up on Pyramid Mountain (Waldo Canyon area) ... they're evacuating Cedar Heights (that gated community west of the Garden of the Gods). Could actually see the flames on the mountain about an hour ago while driving northwest on Colorado Ave at about 31st st.

Cedar Hills subdivision is under mandatory evac (that's the gated community just west of the Garden of the Gods that you enter by the Balanced Rock entrance to the park).

Cascade, Chipita Park and Green Mountain Falls are under voluntary evac. No word of any sort of Manitou Springs evac.

Garden of the Gods is closed.

Rampart Range Road is closed both on the Garden of the Gods end and up at the Woodland Park end.

Not sure if highway 24 is actually closed yet or if they're just discouraging people from going up the pass.

Looks like its moving north west (away from town thank God).

ya new fire up at Estes Part too. My wife and kids are being evacuated right now and told to come down, they were up there for a horse show at the fair grounds but where they were camped was just about 150 ft from the fire, so the wife tells me. Everyone is back at fairgrounds and loading up horses now though. Two bombers and a helicopter already working that one. Started in a cabin and went from there

Wouldn't been an entirely bad thing. Forests in the US are grossly overgrown. For a hundred years we have fought wildfires aggressively and are now paying the price.
Fire is a natural and necessary part of the eco-system and ensures healthy forests.
Us humans know what is best of course[Bang]

My wife & I were in the area so we were sitting on 302th St. 1/10th mile West of Garden of the Gods main entrance/visitors center & we watched the flames crest the ridge & start heading towards a home up there. Then we went & watched from a viewing area off of Mesa Road & watched as flames crested the ridge further East. GoG, The Navigators, Verizon call center, etc. all mandatory evac'd. Also saw planes dropping slurry but this fire is moving with the high winds up there.

i just read on 9news (11am) that they are evacuating the ENTIRE TOWN of Manitou Springs

holy shit!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.9news.com/news/article/274011/339/LIVE-Waldo-Canyon-Fire-press-conference

The entire town of Manitou Springs was evacuated as the Waldo Canyon Fire continues to burn. Mandatory evacuation orders were issued Sunday for Green Mountain Falls, Chipita Park and Cascade.
More than 10,000 people in the area have been ordered to evacuate.
The fire is burning near Waldo Canyon off of Highway 24 and is at zero percent containment. The fire is at 2,000 acres and growing. Smoke can be seen from the Denver area.
No structures have been burned and no injuries have been reported.
About 400 people are working the fire, just to the west of Colorado Springs.
Garden of the Gods Park and Garden of the Gods Visitor Center are closed.
Roads going into Manitou Springs are closed. Pikes Peak Highway is closed.
The Cedar Heights subdivision and Mountain Shadows south of Chuck Wagon are under mandatory evacuation. The evacuation boundaries include Rampart Range Road and everything west of 30th and Centennial, from Gateway Road, north to Chuck Wagon.

looks like a whole neighborhood is going up, terrible...

Friend's house was one. Very sad.

CS is a nightmare right now. Kinda worried about the northwest end of the fire too since, with good reason, resources have been focused on the north east side. I wonder if there is any attempt at containment on the northwest. Power to Rampart res has been severed...one of the main water sources for CS is now running on generators.

Looks like they are having to fly in specialist firefighters from California to work with the MAFFS, and the guy who said he is heading up, said that we will have alot of resources available, but it will get worse before it gets better... They should be here tomorrow.

First off, a HUGE thank you to all law enforcement officers & firefighters working this Colorado Springs fire!

Next, I realize I never should have gone into this area, but I didn't realize how bad things had gotten until I got close to my target.....

I got a call from my boss @ 5:15 this evening. He said he was evacuating and asked if I could come get his guns & hold them for him. He lives (lived?) Off of Pinion valley & Centennial.

I had been taking a nap & when I walked outside my home @ Powers & Dublin (east side of town) the smoke over here was so bad you'd have thought the entire next street over was on fire. The wind was so bad that at one point my Celica got pushed.

As I got closer to my bosses neighborhood the smoke was getting really bad - visibility down to less than 1/10 of a mile. I made it onto Centennial but the smoke was so thick I missed the turn onto Pinion Valley & made it a 1/2 block passed looking for a place to turn into his neighborhood - there wasn't any place & the traffic was at a standstill. I realized that the cross street right in front of me was 30th Street....

Police had the traffic coming South out of Mtn Shadows neighborhood given the right-of-way but then had everyone Northbound (my flow) turn West onto 30th down to Garden of the Gods road. I looked right as I drove past Flying W Ranch Road & the fire was literally between 25 to 50 feet from 30th Street.

I got the hell out of there as quickly as traffic would allow & got onto Northbound I-25. Traffic was bumper to bumper & visibility was very poor. Got off to Eastbound Woodman & got home. When I got out of my car, I realized I was shaking (got burned in a fire years ago).

Damned spooky thing to see firsthand!

ETA: Flying W Ranch is totally destroyed!

Still unknown. The news was reporting this AM that authorities did not believe it was arson. BUT... There was someone who the news says that he claims Saturday he was hiking Waldo Canyon and came across an unattended camp fire that was out of control. This guy claims he attempted to put the fire out but it was too much for him so he called the USFS who told them they were too busy to respond.

I repeated "claims" because there is no way to verify this persons claims.

Yeah I think the 257 homes lost in High Park may be the record holder for only a week or so. This fire is bad, they are OUT of resources, all 450 CSFD firefighters have been recalled, they are putting out a call for any help within 100 miles, Denver metro area departments have sent rigs to staff the CSFD stations.

I doubt there will be lasting effects. I'm just as sure that people will claim there are (and maybe even sue someone about it).

People can smoke for decades and then quit and apparently within a few years of not smoking most of the damage is undone, so I figure one can put up with a couple weeks of smoke and survive.

Since every area north, east and west of us is on evac I bet we do though.

My biggest fear now is that my boss just lost his house ... the company is struggling right now and frankly if his house burned that will probably be the final straw for him. So I'll probably keep my house, but there's a real good chance I'll be losing my job due to the fire :(

Here in Monument (Woodmoor), we had smoke settle in late afternoon yesterday and shortly thereafter had ash start falling.

We will be centralizing our 'bug out' items today and finalizing our plan.

Even though we are a ways away from the closest part of the fire, as many of us understand, fire can move incredibly fast given the right (or wrong) conditions.

I spent the frist two summers after high school working for the Montana Dept of State Lands. Our main task was thinning timber but we also fought forest fires.

My thanks and prayers to all the folks fighting the fires, protecting the neighborhoods, treating people, volunteering and to the citizenry for being active and compliant with the evacuations.

And a special thanks to the plane and helicopter jockey's.

God be with everyone.

Well I just looked at the updated map on GeoMAC (http://www.geomac.gov/viewer/viewer.shtml) and my God, my bosses house seems to have survived. He's in the triangular little condo complex between Flying W Ranch Road and Wilson Rd on the west and east respectively and north of Chuckwagon.

Whether his house survives the day I don't know, but I think it's still there!

We voluntarily evacuated a couple days ago. The fire is still far away, but after that run the other day toward the resevior, and the arsonist at rainbow falls on the other side of us we left. We aren't even in pre-evac, but we aren't stupid N 67 could shut down. Half the neigborhood is already gone with the sheriff up there constantly. Vacation schedualed in three weeks, we'll see how that goes. Probabley be hangin in Denver next week.

This news is not even on national television... Fvcking liberal media somehow doesn't see this as anything important.

I heard AP Radio News talk about it this morning on Sirius/XM.

Seeing the fire, especially at night, is just devastating. Knowing some of the flames are people's houses burning. What a totally helpless/useless feeling.

The first night of the fire my wife and I went down to the command center in Old Colorado City and asked if we could do anything. They gave us a shopping list and we ended up buying a bunch of stuff from the Safeway across the parking lot to help them prepare breakfast for the fire fighters. The next day on the news they said don't go to the command center to volunteer for help. Whoops.

Here's what I think is the latest evacuation areas in the Springs:

http://bloximages.chicago2.vip.townnews.com/chieftain.com/content/tncms/assets/v3/editorial/1/5f/15fe05e8-c019-11e1-8481-001a4bcf887a/4fea9a0931b7d.image.jpg

I took my Fiancee up to Boulder for the weekend, for a friend's 30th birthday party. We went on a short hike behind the flatirons, hoping that fire is put out quickly.

On our drive home Sunday night, we saw the Waldo Canyon fire, mostly smoke but in a few places we could see the actual fire. It was saddening to see all of that smoke in the town. It's even worse to see the photos posted here of USAFA (my Dad graduated there in '77), he's depressed after seeing the photos of the Chapel and the Stadium.

The pictures of peoples homes burning down is humbling. It makes me feel horrible that I can't do anything, granted I live in the next state over and we have our own fires to deal with (though luckily they are only the national forests and not much of structures).

What's worse, is that when we got down close to Trinidad, we saw some idiot who probably started a grass fire on the side of the road with a cigarette. Well, we saw the aftermath of that discarded butt. The grass on the northbound side of the road was on fire and producing about 1ft high flames. There were a couple of cars there trying to stomp the fire out, never saw any signs of a fire dept on its way though and didn't have a cell phone to call for one. Hoping those good samaritans put the fire out before it took off, but I haven't seen anything on inciweb about it yet.

Here are some pictures I took yesterday from work (30th St and Garden of the Gods) before we evacuated at 5pm. Used my iPhone so not great pictures but you get the idea. The helicopters were getting water from the resevoir at the top of Kissing Camels. These guys were fast. 1 minute to fill and 5 minutes round trip to the fire all day long, but it just wasn't enough with the winds shifting in the afternoon.

Sad part is what kind of justice will happen to the person that started this? Look at Terry Barton who stated the Haymen. She was sentenced to 12 years and if I recall only served 6? And the Haymen resulted in 6 deaths. Not sure if there are any in this fire yet. It just sucks knowing this person should face more justice than he/she will probably get

This disaster has just reached legendary proportions!

All joking aside, I can barely see across the street because of the smoke (near Woodman and Powers), which means the wind is blowing the fire back toward the city. There is ash everywhere... A charred corner of a sheet of paper with some handwriting on it about 1x1.5 inches just landed in my backyard... 10 miles from the fire.

It is a desperate situation (http://twitchy.com/2012/06/26/waldo-canyon-fire-rages-on/) and has been for some time (http://twitchy.com/2012/06/23/images-evacuation-updates-flood-twitter-as-waldocanyonfire-spreads-west-of-colorado-springs/). Hopefully, President Obama will finally do something to help someone other than himself. Or, eco-nuts. Maybe President Obama will do something about the aerial fighting fleet that his policies shrunk (http://www.gazette.com/opinion/obama-140889-edge-rages.html).

“Less than a year ago, the same administration seemed to be doing its best to leave the Forest Service ill-equipped to deal with the mounting wildfire threat, by summarily cancelling a contract with a company that furnished roughly one third of the wildfire-fighting tankers in the agency’s already-depleted fleet. That action might loom large as calls mount for an investigation into why the agency’s air assets seem inadequate to meet the threat.”
Washington-based Human Events magazine reported in September of 2011 that nearly half of the federal government’s air tankers sat idle at a California airport, as wildfires ripped through national forests throughout California, Texas, New Mexico, and other states.
It turns out the Obama administration ended a long-standing contract, leaving the Forest Service with only 11 tankers to battle 50 wildfires that were burning nationwide. A decade ago, the Forest Service had 40 firefighting tankers.
The Obama administration canceled the government’s contract with Aero Union — a company with 60 employees that had been under contract with the Forest Service for 50 years. Though it canceled that contract, the administration had no plan for an immediate replacement. Aero Union CEO Britt Gourley told Human Events the administration provided no details on why the contract was ended.
“They didn’t want to talk about it,” Gourley said of Obama administration officials.
