View Full Version : Stripping Olympic Metals after drug testing
Maybe someone can enlighten me on the subject. I understand that there are specific Olympic rules that disallow the use of specific performance enhancing drugs. But I don't understand why they wouldn't do all of that testing BEFORE the competitors even compete. Why does the testing happen AFTER the competition and awards are distributed then they end up stripping metals from competitors. Maybe they do test them before competing then again after they win and there ends up being a difference in the test results? If that is the case, why not delay the awards until after the post competition test results come back?

Roiding up during competition. Like weighing a race car after they won. Who gives a shit ow much the 32nd place car weighed. I personally don't care if the let em use roids or not.

They test before and after competitions. The Belarussian who got her gold medal taken from her was tested immediately before and after her competition but results weren't available immediately -- both tests came up positive. The medal awards are done immediately after results are known -- which may be before tests are finished. The IOC hopes the fact of the rigorous testing is enough to prevent doping during competition (and preferably at all) but the Belarussian must have thought she was smarter than them.
They don't really have to pull medals that often -- you see competitors disqualified before competition more often than post-win pulls and a lot of the post-win pulls come after other evidence comes out like public testimony.
If the Belarussian competitors before and after results were both "Failed" then that is even more fail boat. If they completed and confirmed the testing results before they could even compete it would eliminate the vast majority of the during event test failures.
Maybe a good way of fixing the "Doping" issue is to have a significant penalty for testing positive. Like getting a an arm or leg chopped off....... That would make cheaters think twice about even trying to do it and it would ensure that you wouldn't have to deal with them in future Olympic events.

There is simple too many athletes to try and test them all before the games. Many do not even make the teams until right before the games begin.

The Belarussian would have been DQed before competition if her positive test results had been available before the competition. It takes time to do all the tests; I think the pre-competition sample was taken literally just before the event. We (the US) had one guy booted prior to competition for testing positive for marijuana use.
I'll give the IOC a lot of crap but they do a pretty good job with the testing and there's no way to ensure you won't have to pull medals after the fact because some people just think they're too smart. Look at how many years professional cyclists have been doping before their stories started unraveling and medals were stripped and reawarded YEARS after competition.
In all honesty, this is a pretty penny ante gripe. Instead of complaining about medals being stripped, you should be griping about the boneheads who cheat and think they're going to get away with it.
