It sounds like he didn't have a holster, at least not a proper one.

One caller told police that seven to eight shots were fired in the theater, but police later determined only one shot was involved.

Pocket holster. I hate pocket holsters for doing things that involve sitting down. I wonder what kind of gun it is.

I have a pocket holster. It rigidly covers the whole trigger so adjusting it is no big deal, while in the holster. The thing I worry a bit about is drawing it in a stressful situation and reholstering. A lot of cops shoot themselves in the leg that way and I'm sure a fair number of civilians have.

A proper CCW holster won't let you touch the trigger.

That's pretty funny. Ultimately it sounds like he handled it okay. He should have just called the Police and said that he was en route to the hospital and that they could meet him there. I wonder if they will charge him with illegal discharge of a firearm?

The other article I read said he dropped it. I hate not knowing what happened. Good lessons learned.

That one did as well.

“The (man) was cooperative with police and admitted that his gun fell out of his pocket and when it hit the floor it discharged,” Dyer said in the police statement.

I call bullshit. He was adjusting it in his back pocket (likely holster-less) and pulled the trigger.

I'm just surprised they didn't say that he was toting an AK in the theater.

It's time to ban those hi-cap pockets! [ROFL1]

It probably was a Glock. You know they don't have safeties, can accept only high-cap clips, and are made of plastic to avoid detection in metal detectors. Dangerous weapons, they are.

What a tard. This is why I do not carry with one in the chamber. The situation where you do not have enough time to rack the slide is so rare that in my mind it is not justifiable. Pulling a gun in a stressful situation is difficult, but if you practice and practice starting from a empty chamber, you are just as well off as drawing a loaded weapon and you do not have the possibility of an accidental discharge while drawing or carrying.

This guy was probably sitting on his pocket pistol without a holster and with one in the chamber. Idiot.

[ROFL1] I've ready many an article that lists all this! Oh my god... that Glock on my hip has no safety? A Hi-cap "clip"? And is undetectable by metal detectors? Why have I been leaving it at home when I go to the court house? [Bang]

i wholeheartedly dissagree you cant plan when or how you will be attacked....every firearm i own stays with one in the chamber.....my glock in my belly band is perfectly safe as long as my booger picker stays off the bang bang switch

I think that the sound of racking a slide is distinctive enough that you may not be able to act before the bad guy targets you.

Additionally, you risk a malfunction when you rack a slide during a high-stress situation, or if you're trying to do it "quietly" under a table or something.

Guns going off when dropped is 19th century technology or a total POS gun. With transfer bars, firing pin blocks and such a proper gun goes off when the trigger is pulled.

If your holster lets you touch the trigger it ain't worth it. My holsters completely cover the trigger guards so it has to come out before I can touch the trigger.

Azoom snap caps are your friend. They heft like real rounds and can't be mistaken for the real thing. I've done some stress drills, should do more. Fast draw, laying on ground, jammed in a corner, weak hand, whatever I could make up. I've managed to fumble fire out of the holster going to aim but never when in the holster.

I still say that guy was a dumbass. Assuming he keeps his CCW he'll be more careful when carrying.

Guess I'm getting in on the tail-end of this, but it also sounds as though he may now also have to be butt of a few jokes.

Sorry - couldn't resist, and I even tried to get a little more mileage out of it with the double meaning of "butt" here. [Flower]

On a more serious note - lesson learned.

Not sure I am buying that he dropped the weapon. Sounds like no holster, but who knows. Either way a bad move. Lucky he shot his own ass, not someone else.
