A Pueblo Police Officer who shot and killed a suspect this morning was hit in the chest and arm before he returned fire, according to investigators.

The shots came from a BB gun in the hands of a man who was reported to have shot out several car windows before the officer arrived in the 2000 block of Columbia near the intersection of Pueblo Blvd. and Northern.

The officer was treated and released at a hospital. The suspect was shot in the chest and stomach. Investigators say several people saw what happened. There were no surveillance cameras which captured what happened, though the police car did have an operational camera which has not been viewed by investigators.

It is believed the officer fired 8 rounds.

"Colorado Law authorizes law enforcement officers to use lethal force when confronted with imminent death or someone else is confronted with imminent death," said Chief Lou Velez, Pueblo Police Chief. "A weapon was leveled at the officer and the officer was shot."

The suspect was 21 years old. His name has not been released. He did have some minor criminal history. An autopsy is planned.

The officer was placed on leave with pay pending the outcome of the investigation.

I personally do not agree with the term 'retard' being used to describe this guy...

It's disrespectful to retards everywhere.

Oh man, that was brilliant. Fire at an officer with a bb? Did he not think the officer would put him down? This is about as stupid as kids pointing laser tag guns a police back in the day.

That's solid work right there. The libs will of course try to fry the officer. Stating that he should have known that it was a BB gun and rather than kill the kid, he should have offered him roadside counseling and given him a backrub so the kid feels better.

It's one thing if cop shot the kid after the kid fired his bb gun, and it's another thing if cop just saw the gun pointed at him and he didn't know it's bb gun.

ETA: well, on the second thought- I agree, no matter how it happened - PLAY STUPID GAMES WIN STUPID PRIZE!

I agree it's not fair to say that once the cop got hit with a BB he should have known. I have spoken with SWAT members while in a gunfight who got bumped by one of their team members moving locations and thought they had gotten shot. I've also spoken to others who have been hit and didn't even realize it until long after. The cop probably saw the gun and his training/instict took over and he couldn't tell if the BBs hitting him were real rounds or not.

This ^ , under stress, seeing what you believe to be a gun pointed at you, hearing the shot (even some airsoft guns are loud and produce real recoil), then feeling the sting of getting hit, one might truely believe that he was taking live fire. It's not like we should have expected him to look down at his wounds first to see if he was bleeding, then check for depth to determine if it was life threatening or not ... sounds like a clean shoot. I personally don't know what it feels like to be shot with a 22short compaired to a BB gun, and I don't expect this guy to know either.

Also different kind of BB's. Standard kids little bb's dont shoot out car windows all that well. I am assuming this is more of an air rifle with either the kinda conical or bigger bb's. Likely not lethal but surely dangerous if hit in the face etc.

I've never been shot, but a lot of people I know have (one with an AK, medium range, 3 times)... in the heat of the moment you almost don't feel anything. My brother, who took a 9mm to the leg, said it didn't hurt at first, in fact the only way he knew he was shot was he felt the wetness. No surprise here that the cop thought he was getting shot and defended himself. He'll be back on the beat in no time, I'm sure of it!

I talked to one of the girls at Toni & Joe's Pizzeria, where it happened. She said the kid had a co2 pellet gun that was apparently pretty powerful.

First round hit the cop in the head, and he reacted. I predict this will be ruled a good shoot.

I feel bad for the kid's family though, and the cop who has to live with it.

The Police officer knew it was a bb gun and killed him? Man I guess I was lucky to survive all the bb gun fights I was in as a kid, imminent death, who knew.

I don't think the officer knew it was a "bb gun" (which it wasn't, typical Chieftain kneejerk reporting).

I think the officer saw a gun pointed at him, saw it fired, and felt an impact to his head. He reacted the way he was trained. He returned fire.

I may be wrong about all of it, but that's the way I see it at this time.

I knew it was only a matter of time....I was watching the news and they were interviewing the 21yr olds family and guess what.... he is a great kid that would never do something like this, of course. His mom "wants to see the video!" because there is no way her son would point a gun at a police officer(HE HIT THE COP WITH 2 SHOTS!)
