Am I the only one who thinks this term is not beneficial to our way of life where firearms are concerned?
I think it is 100% a misnomer and we as law abiding citizens should stop using it
to add more fuel to the fire. This is also along with labeling any rifle wether an
AR15 or a bolt action with a picatanny rail on it an "Assualt" rifle.
Am I alone in this train of thought that it hurts us as firearm owners more than it helps?

I agree, I hate the term 'assault rifle'. I use battle rifle, and call the mag by number. Why should we help them by using their terminology?

The term Assault Rifle never really bothered me, I never thought about it. I do like Battle Rifle though but aren't those pretty close to the same? I also call out my mags usually by #. 13 round 15 round ect.

I just call them "Multi projectile zombie stoppers" instead of assault rifle.

Who are you guys talking to that you use terms like this?
An AR is an "AR" or a "carbine". (FYI- the term battle rifle usually refers to a non-sniper platform .308. I.e. an FAL or a SR-25 EMC)
A magazine is a magazine. I can't think of a reason I would use the term "high capacity magazine" unless I was mocking someone. For an AR, a 30rd magazine is standard capacity. For a G19, a 15rd magazine is standard capacity.
Stop hanging out with hippies and you won't have these problems.....
It is irrelevant.
While legislators are stupid and will continue to use the wrong terminology, the lawyers who write gun control bills are not stupid and will make sure all bases are covered by using terms such as "ammunition feeding device."
I don't think Battle rifle is any better. The media will use it the same way as they do assault rifle... Why not just call a rifle a rifle, a carbine a carbine, and a magazine a magazine. (it's NOT A CLIP, by the way).
It's all Obama's fault.
Oh sorry, we're not to play the blame game...
I agree with the general points here- my AR is an AR, or if you want to be more specific it's a 5.56mm, gas piston operated, semi automatic rifle based on the M4 Carbine. It holds 30-round composite P-MAG magazines.
Clip, assault rifle, and high capacity are just terms used to identify the person you are talking to is an idiot and doesn't have a basic grasp on firearms knowledge, thus you probably shouldn't even try arguing with them. [Beer]

This ^^^^^ Every Hobby, every job has terms that the people know and I do not see them changing anytime soon. The word "clips" has been around since I was a kid and I do not see anyone changing it anytime soon.
Of course we could always get Washington to make a law to order the masses to only use the word "Magazine" and the word "Clip" punishable by a year in jail. [Flower]

Please stop using "clip!" Clips do not have springs! Magazines have springs!
Clips load magazines, magazines load guns!
And yes, the Enbloc clip loaded an internal magazine!

It frustrates me to no end how most video games (Call of Duty is notoriously bad about this) don't have the word "magazine" in the game. EVERYTHING is a clip. And so nearly everyone playing those games assumes that Call of Duty is an authority on guns, and they call everything a clip too. And so it perpetuates. [Bang]
I've decided to not care any more. Clip still annoys me a little when I hear it but I don't say anything

Don't forget that they mislabel weapons classes in the game too- Assault Rifles... [Bang]

Well, the assault rifle in that context is not terribly inaccurate is it? You are picking a rifle to assault with... But either way, video games generally don't teach correct nomenclature. Last time I played COD, I had some 9 year old yelling at me about how he emptied his whole clip into me and I didn't die. [Shake]

Go look at the for sale section on this board and many others. A lot of so called gun folks use the term hi cap.
Its ridiculous and hurts our sport.

Then they should be mercilessly mocked until they learn. Negative reinforcement can be a useful tool in such situations. [Beer]

I hate how more than 10 rounds in commonly considered "high capacity". Most of my mags hold more than 10 rounds. 10 rounds is on the low end of the capacity scale and should be considered "low capacity".

I don't have any mags (or clips) that hold LESS than 10 rounds. [AR15]

/\ This. Even give them titles under their names to reflect that.
If it makes peeople feel better about their mags, we can call them "govt length magazines"

This is a good policy to have... [Beer]
Can we get a media definition of the term "high capacity"? I mean surely a 50-round beta is more high capacity than a 30 round standard issue, but then again a 100-round beta is even more "high capacity" than a 50... and oh dear I've gone crosseyed... Please stop doing this to me, thinking about these preposterous terms hurts.

I do. I have a bunch of 1911 mags that are 7 rounders, and the mags for my P225 hold 8.
Personally, I prefer "Evil Black Rifle" to "Assault Weapon"...[Muaha] Although it doesn't work so well on my FDE AR.[Bang]

Hey, great idea Jerry. Then the Obama administration could use this as an excuse to levy a new TAX in lieu of the jail sentence.[Coffee]

That's how I describe mine... Mine is anything but standard. [Tooth]
A rifle cannot be considered an "assault rifle", unless is has been used to assault someone, ergo, my AR is in reality a "target rifle". A high capacity magazine is, to my mind, one with a capacity significantly greater than the magazine which the firearm was designed to use, for example, the G17 33 round mag is the largest magazine produced by Glock for use in that weapon, so, anything larger than say, 66 rounds might be considered "high capacity" for the G17. Not to mention impractical and damned heavy. The largest magazine designed for use in the AR15 is around a hundred rounds, so a 200 round magazine might be considered "high capacity"...unless one is being assaulted by hordes of zombie/vegans/Jehova's Witness terrorist types, in which case a 200 round magazine would be considered a "good start".[Tooth]
I am going to stop calling it an AR or assault rifle or a rifle or anything. I am going to start calling it the "barbie for men"....you can dress it up however you like[ROFL1]

Don't forget the belt fed conversion and a SAW drum... daily carry, right?
I do not like the term "assault rifle." I much prefer "sturmgewehr." It sounds more badass [ROFL3]
Words have meanings. The way people use those words tells you a lot about the people who use them. I appreciate the warning. [Coffee]

Out of all the massive public shootings/school shootings, which ones were actually committed with "assault rifles"? I know the North Hollywood shootout was. Or so they say the theater shooting last month was.
