View Full Version : high blood sugar reading
As part of our new crappy health care plan we had to go into test BMI blood pressure etc
Everything is normal except I had a really high blood sugar level. 182 points
they where shooting for a 110.
I am going in for a retest tomorrow. And was looking for ways to lower the number so i dont take a rate increase and have to have a life coach for the next year on keeping my blood sugar down.
In the 12 hours before I tested I drank quite a bit of beer a 12 oz redbull about an hour before the test did not eat breakfast.could these have been part of the reason i had such a high reading?
I am 25 don't smoke 10% body fat and eat pretty well. No real history of this problem in the family.
The beer, red bull, and not eating will definatley mess with your sugar levels.
Next time they test you, eat a normal meal and try to stay off alcohol and other sugars in an attmept to get a true reading.

Follow instructions from your doctor before the test, which I'm pretty sure don't include beer or Red Bull....

Really should try not to eat or drink anything other than water after midnight before your testing. Or at least nothing with sugar in it if you can't get testing first thing in the morning.

You need to fast for 12 hours before the test. Doc should have told you that.
The red bull alone would toss the numbers all out of whack.
If the re rest shows it is still high, here are some suggestions.
Limit sugar drinks. Soda pop and red bull are loaded with sugar. Same with Gatorade.
Limit white starches. Pasta , white rice , white bread , potatoes etc.
Take 1000mg of fish oil a day.
Prob won't have to worry though , the lack of fasting before the test is most likely why it was high. I would make your doctor pay for the new test. Idiot.
Cool thanks guys don't eat many carbs as it is and i will not eat anything for the 12 hours

This.
I was pre-diabetic a few years ago. Fast before the test. Stay away from sugar. I can smell sugar on people's breath now that I really limit sugar in my diet.
That was me too, figured that my regular breakfast of a bottle of coke and a cigarette before my flight physical was probably not a good idea.
Drink lots of water.
Being said 10 years later went full adult onset..sucks
My company does the same crap. Offers a $45 per paycheck "discount" on the health insurance, but only so long as we submit to a health screening. On a funny note, I completely spaced the fasting bit before going in. Had a home-made egg and cheese sandwich, some Pringles, and my usual pot of coffee before going in. Needless to say, my b/p was sky-high and my triglycerides were on par with an obese Wal-marter on a Crisco diet.
BTW... As a registered nurse, I should at least mention to the OP though, having a 180 blood sugar could potentially be indicative of something to have checked out. Could potentially be a pre-diabetic marker. Depends on how soon before the test you consumed all that stuff, but generally the pancreas is pretty good at compensating. I've checked my glucose reading at work after eating a pile of junk food and couple sodas (for test purposes... lol.) and it was still < 120. Not trying to panic you, just couldn't hurt to have your doc check an HgbA1C level. Could just be a fluke, but even if it turns out to be pre-diabetes - that's a condition easily treated/reversed with minor lifestyle modifications and would prevent it progressing to something needing medication.

It scared the shit out of me. I worked hard and keep it under control.
Just Had a dinner of sauted veggies and some italian sausage in homemade tomato sauce. no beer. Been drinking water all day. beginning the fasting now.
Been poking around and I am getting kinda nervous about this if it was not a fluke. Guess we will see in the morning.
