View Full Version : Intro to 3Gun
Provided the weather is decent, James and I will be teaching an Intro to 3Gun course on November 23rd at CRC. If you took the classroom intro earlier this year or have been wanting to get into 3Gun, this is a great opportunity. We won't be covering basic pistol skills except how they relate to 3Gun, so we will expect that you have shot some pistol competition and are fully aware of the safety and range commands. If you are unsure, please contact me.
We will run from 10am until about 4pm, $100* and we will limit this to 12 students. You should bring 20 slugs, 150 rounds of birdshot, 150 rounds of pistol and 200 rounds of rifle. If you don't have gear/guns, bring factory 9mm pistol ammo, factory 12 guage ammo and factory .223 ammo and you can borrow some guns.
Topics Covered:
The 4 basic tenants of 3Gun
Rules/Divisions/Gear
Abandonment/Transitions
Shotgun skills: Loading techniques, aerials, slugs, patterns, chokes, ammo, etc.
Rifle skills: short, medium and long range, ammo, zeros, holds
Stage break-downs
*IF you are an experienced 3Gunner who wants to come out and practice, run a few drills and get a few pointers, you are more than welcome, but you must confirm with me ahead of time. Cost $30.
A little about us...James and I own CarbonArms and we manufacture several products for Tactical and competitive shooters. We designed the highly regarded TWinS loading systems that have revolutionized shotgun loading in 3Gun competition. We also have designed several products for firearms, one of which is in a current military trial. We work with major manufacturer's doing R&D and product development for various platforms as well. We are both very involved in the shooting sports and training with multiple certifications. We are respected competitors who compete at numerous national level majors each year. We also work major matches from RO to RM to MD each year and James is currently ranked in the top 10 overall on the 3Gun Natiion Pro Tour. However, and even more important, we both are skilled teachers who are able to evaluate and teach our students the what, why and how of the topcis.
To sign up, PM me your e-mail and I will confirm details with you.

Can you suggest to me or point out some local pistol events that would meet your previous pistol competition experience requirements. I would like to attend an introductory course such as this next time it is offered.

I am in, assuming the weather holds.
RE pistol match experience... Any of the USPSA, Steel Challenge (There is one at CRC on November 17th), or IDPA matches would suffice.
So far the weather report looks good.
About half full.

I'm in, confirmation sent.
Fortunately the weather has held. I sent all of the folks who signed up an e-mail. Should be a blast!
Had a good time at the range with you all. I hope it was benefiicial and that we see you all at some matches.
Great introduction to a new avenue of shooting. So much to learn and so little time. Thanks Mark and James for all the instruction had a great day with the group and I'll keep an eye out for the next class.

Man I am sorry I missed it! Was in the shop all day looking out into the sunshine! Oh well, next time for me!
Very helpful class. Really helped me get my head around the differences between 3Gun and the stuff I am used to doing. Really had a great time and learned a ton.

Outstanding training. Thanks Mark and Jason. Can't wait to give it a try this spring!!!
Mark, I wish I had seen this a few weeks ago! Any chance you're planning on hosting another class anytime soon?
We will do another one. Weather is the factor through the winter months. Possibly Jan 5th, 2013 with a weather contingency. If you are interested, go ahead and post in this thread and keep an eye on it and we will update it.

Count me in on the next one. Less work travel and the wife will be more open to it.
Great class! I will put up a more detailed AAR once I get it written.

I thoroughly enjoyed this class and learned a lot from James and Mark. Very big thanks to them for putting on such an awesome 3-Gun Training course and giving us an opportunity to come out and practice and get feedback from a couple of top-level Three Gunners.
A complete AAR can be found on my blog here: http://trainhardshootfast.com/carbon-arms-intro-to-3-gun-aar/
Mark, I took a couple videos during the shotgun loading demonstrations. Is it cool if I upload those to YouTube and share them here?
Good times,
Dave
Sure, but only the ones we did not fumble. [ROFL2]

Hi,
I am very very interested in getting into 3 gun and steel challange. Anyone know when the next training class will be held?? I live in the springs but will be happy to go where ever it is being held. Also, where do I go to find a posting of shoot taking place in 2013?
Thanks!!
Russ, Steel Challenge at CRC is the 15th.
Sign up for ecouspsa@googlegroups.com to get notified of matches. The webpage for the ECO section is in transition, but notice will certainly go out on the Goolge groups.
I will be doing another 3Gun class in January. Followed by a rifle class and then a shotgun class.
Considering March 1 (Friday) for a 6 hour 3Gun course out at CRC. March 2 is a 3Gun match and we can run the match together as a group. Let me know if you are interested.

Got your PMs. The course is the same as outlined in Post #1 on this thread.

got the time off--see you there.
We have two 3-Gun courses coming up...
Februray 15th at RWs range (RWFirearms Training). It will be more rifle intensive and we will do long range. For the close in rifle stuff, you can use a .22RF rifle as long as you have 20+ round mags. This course is intensive and will lay the foundation for a successful first 3Gun match. We will run from 10am until 4pm, $150 and we will limit this to 12 students. You should bring 25 slugs, 25 buckshot, 100 rounds of birdshot, 100 rounds of pistol and 150 rounds of rifle minimum. Appropriate for a first course provided you have solid pistol competition skills.
March 1 at CRC. It will be a little more shotgun intensive. We will spend about half of the 6 hours on the shotgun: loading, flippers, flyers, chokes, patterns loads, slugs, buckshot. 150 rounds of birdshot, 25 buck, 50 slugs, 75 pistol, 75 rifle. You can use a .22RF rifle and or pistol of you want, full power is fine too. $100 limited to 12 students. If you have taken our intro course, this is a great follow-up. Again, provided you have solid pistol competition skills, you can take this as a first course, however, we won't cover mid and long range rifle skills in this course.
If you have been wanting to take a CCW course, we will allow either of these courses to meet our range requirement. There is additional coursework, tests, homework, etc, so if you want to do this, don't delay. Propbably won't offer a package deal like this again.

Mark,
Any particular recommendations on slugs? Or is a slug a slug?
So far very happy with my new 930 but excited to try it out in a more practical application.
thanks
If you have not tried slugs, best bet is to get 2 or 3 boxes of each and see what your gun shoots well. Federal Tru-Balls seem to be one that is pretty accurate in all platforms and operates all platforms. I use the B&Ps and Remingtons, both reduced recoil.

Anybody/Everybody,
PSA:
I don't normally keep a lot of shotgun rounds on hand. Don't know why. Maybe just the bulk of it. I had to go through 4-5 of my 'standard' online vendors to find slugs which surprised me a bit! I know the .223/9mm etc etc is hard to come by but I didn't expect slugs to be in that high of demand.
Finally found Federal Truball at Wideners. Stocked up but likewise, per their email: "Please allow 14-24 days to process and ship out your order.
Thank you, Wideners." That puts it right on the bubble for delivery vs range time.
So anybody else heading the class, you might want to start looking now.
Don't let lack of slugs disuade you from coming. I have a stash for just this reason.
Youth (15 and under) take our classes for free! We will also loan out equipment, so don't think you have to go buy stuff to take the class.
I still have a few slots left for the Feb 15 class.

Took less time than advertised and it looks like Wideners has some more in stock.
(I'll also have a few extra boxes that can be bought if someone needs some--at what it cost me).
So, the Feb 15 class was cancelled due to snow and cold. March 1 still has some slots available.
I have gotten 4 or 5 people tell me they want to come to the March 1 course. If you want to go, you need to give me a solid YES. There are a few slots left.
So, due to our meetings with some folks in the Gold dome, the Friday March 1 class will start at 12:30 and go until dark.
James and I will be there by Noon (CRC) tomorrow for the class. If you want to show up and have not let me know, no worries, it will be a small class. Kind of been side tracked with all the legislatiuve stuff the past month.

This class happening again any time soon?
Might be persuaded to do one in May. Will have to look at dates.
Great class to take for an overall view of the most commonly used firearms. Mark is to the point and will leave you with plenty of info to drip from your brain.
May 3rd is the next 3Gun class out at CRC.
We will start out with about 1 hour on shotgun loading. Will will set up Garcia's load 12 challenge and get up your speed and consistency so loading won't be an issue for you anymore.
Then we will work on trigger speed for various distance targets. Basically, help you develop the gas pedal for 3Gun. About an hour.
Last, we will set up two choice stages. With no input, you will run your plan, then we will break down each students run and work on getting you metrics for the 3Guns. We will work on compare and contrast different plans, measuring risk vs. reward options, etc.
Start at 10am, done at 4pm. 8 students, $150/student.
Send me a PM for payment details.
Still have a few slots left. We will have time to work on any specific issues you may have as well.
With all the moisture today, the class on Friday would just be a mudfest, so cancelled. Will pick a new date.
Sorry.

Actually ill be looking for an update. This sounds like a great class.
If there are enough people interested, we will do another Intro to 3G course this fall.
I do have plans for a course on September 6. It will be a split session, 4 hours on shotgun and 4 hours on Rifle. We will go 8 to 12 on rifle and then 1 to 5 on shotgun. Both will be fairly intense and we will cover all the fundamentals of both platforms and then run drills to get you up to speed. A person could certainly do only one session if they wanted. We won't be doing transitions or ANY pistol work. This is hard focus on the skills for the two platforms on their own. Roundcounts: 400 rifle, 250 birdshot, 50 slugs and 25 buckshot.
$100 for a 4 hours session, or $175 for both. 8 students maximum in each session.
If you need more info, let me know.

Count me in
I might attend again! It was a blast and a great way to learn a new skill. Post the proposed dates and we can comment if it fit's our summer schedule's.
September 6, rifle/shotgun is the only solid date.
If there are 6 to 8 that want the 6 hour intro, I might be able to squeeze it in August 31.
Ringing this up. I have some committed for the 6th. There is also a match on the 7th. If you want in, please let me know asap.
Intro to 3Gun on April 19th? It is getting warmer and I know several folks did not get a class in last year who wanted one. I will plan to do the course on the 18th, 10am to 4pm if there are enough people who can go on that day. Otherwise I will pick a later date.

where and how much on the 18/19th?
Just the 19th. 120 @CRC.
What time?
What is the '120'? Sorry if this is obvious and I am missing it.
What do we need to bring?

$120 course fee. Sorry.
Bring what you think you might use in a 3Gun match. If you have multiple ARs/SG/Pistols, bring them and we will test them out.
200 rounds of rifle and pistol, 100 rounds of shotgun, 25 slugs MINIMUM.
I'll run the entire course for 3 people minimum, otherwise, I will pare it down and do more of a coaching/drills style day.
Really want to do this but this weekend doesn't work. Hope you have another class soon
