What can I do to help a gritty trigger be less gritty? (Spike's tactical is the current trigger)

if I have to disassemble the thing, I might as well get a different trigger, but I don't want to drop that much coin on something fancy.

Thoughts?

I put mine on a stone and made it a lot better. That was a DPMS though. My spikes is super smooth.

You can polish the engagement surfaces but be careful not to take too much off as the parts are "surface hardened" and if you go too far you will dramatically decrease the service life of the parts. Also, be careful not to change any of the engagement surface angles.

If you want an affordable replacement with a smooth out of the box pull for a reasonable price you might look at the ALG triggers. They are pretty much stock triggers with much better finishes than the stock stuff. The won't be gritty but they aren't a high-end match trigger either.

Here are some links. The first one is their standard trigger. The second one is their "combat" trigger which has a some sort of coating (nickel boron?) on it.

I have one of the combat triggers. You're welcome to check it out if you ever find yourself up in the Thornton area.

You will definitely need to take it out to polish it

Well, crap. If I'm going to have to take it out, maybe I'll just get a different trigger....

Either you're lucky, or I'm unlucky. I remember holding sub-moa groups with my 6.8. I put in on a spikes lower, and the trigger was not nice to me. Everything felt great, but that trigger. Agh it haunted my dreams!

Try doing an internet search using "10 minute Trigger job". You will get many hits on ways of doing want you want.

2 Warnings though-

As mentioned before be very careful when doing anything to the sear/trigger engagement area. It doesn't take hardly anything to mess it up to be unsafe.

The other thing is Do Not pull the trigger and let the hammer hit on the lower. Always catch it. It can hit the receiver hard enough to damage the wall between the Bolt Hold Open and the hammer trigger area.

Have fun.

I noticed my DPMS LPK is not as smooth as my PSA... might have to look into polishing myself.

I have a spikes and its not bad. Just a milspec trigger so its not the best but not the worst. Now the PSA I have... gritty is a mild understatement.

Thats one of the biggest reasons I use RRA's LPK's for my builds, everyone I have ever done had a smooth pull and crisp break. I just used a Stag kit for the last one and it was nice but still not what I have experinced with RRA.

DD components seem to clean up a little nicer than most, not too gawdawful of deep grinding scratches to stone out. DPMS bits look like a broken rock was used to finish them.

YMMV

I put the KNS anti rotating pin upgrade kit on mine because my hammer pin walked out, but an added benifit it rally smoothed up my trigger and the pins were like $30. Replacing the trigger is pretty easy though, Im gonna put an ALG in mine soon

Go fancy and get a Geissele.

Go fancy and get a Geissele.

Good advice. I have two and love them.

Go fancy and get a Geissele.

Worth every penny.

Although, I have some RRA triggers as well and they aren't too shabby either (2 stage 3 lb triggers in Varmint guns) especially for $120

Hve the RRA match 2 stage and the Geissele SSA 2 stage. I have only one of the RRA's and two of the SSA's. Bite the bullet, drive up to Bowers, and pick one up. It's a cry once scenario, and the Geissele is the best choice short of a JP single stage IMO. The JP doesn't use stock springs like the SSA does and is much more difficult to install.

Went fancy. Bought a geisselle. It's pretty neat.
