Having a minor debate. The claim is all colorado law enforcement are required to carry Speer Gold Dots. I'm sure some agencies carry it but don't think there is any kind of state wide mandate for that. (As I type they are backpedaling that maybe it was just State Police.)

Anyone with any kind of linkable proof one way or another? Or one of our LEO's on the board can just let me know their agency doesn't use it.

Used to be Federal Hydra Shok. Now it's Winchester Ranger/PDX1.

Depends on the Dept. One dictated Hydroshock back in the day, the other just had us choose from a list of approved ammo and buy it ourselves. So in short it varies from agency to agency. I have been out of LE for a while now and from what I understand from current LE buddys is that Hydroshock has fallen out of favor.

Hydra Shoks have a horrible habbit of not punching holes in car doors and windshields... There was a fairly large shooting on Sheridan and 92nd I think a while back... Police pretty much swiss cheesed the car... The 9mm and some of the 40 were able to punch holes in the doors of the car. Most of the 45 didn't make it through, or if they did, they were stopped by the panel on the inside.

From my understanding and what I heard, that was the tipping point for the switch.

Thanks all, I was 99% sure, but I couldn't at work find anything from a quick googling to prove it. And yes it was a stupid debate, so I was irate enough to run here for a massive F*** you, you're dumb type of deal.

The State Patrol and most of the other state level LEO agencies use Speer Gold Dot. I've worked a few officer involved shootings in the recent past and the ammo used varies by agency. There is no state mandate for a particular firearm, ammunition or any other tool utilized by law enforcement in this state.

Why are you even having this debate?

Problem solved. Problem staying solved. For the Love of God delete this thread. [fail]

Ignoring the debate aspect, I found useful the responses from current and former LEO as to what different agencies carry. This info doesn't seem to be widely available.

The instructor at the CCW class I took stated it's a good idea to carry what local LE carries, as this could negate the possibility of prosecution saying in court you used "special man-killer ammo" if you are involved in a self-defense shooting.

I've also seen the flip side to that coin. Sir is it true that you researched what ammunition is carried by local law enforcement agencies and carried that same ammunition for your personal protection? Don't you think that's unnecessary? Perhaps you were attempting to be like local law enforcement and engaging in situations that you shouldn't have, when in fact you should have just called the Police and let them handle the situation. Defense attorneys will say anything. There is no winning. Either way you will look like the bad guy.

Good point, and I agree. Best to practice avoidance, deterrence, and de-escalation at all times and not end up in the court room if you can avoid it.

Bottom line. Depends on the Dept. Should be enough said!
