View Full Version : Doing more with club shoots

OK So I thought about this the other day, and while 90% of the club shoots are on weekends I can't attend, I think we need to look at starting something new with them.

We have several guys here who either train folks, get a crap load of training or are just really damn good with their weapons.

What about starting to have clinics/training sessions for each club shoot? Fundamentals like Appleseed shoots, through the hight speed low drag stuff taught by the likes of Pat Rogers and Larry Vickers?

This shouldn't cost much if anything other than bringing your own supplies and maybe pitching in for some materials (Targets, cheesy brats, ect..) and a portion of the club shoot time.

Focus on a specific skill, drill it and share the experience. I know folks like KellyTT, USMC03, ZakSmith and the whole IDPA/3Gun crowd could do some of the teaching.

If we started doing this, we might actually get folks to pitch back in the club dues and do more than get together, stand on line and oogle each others toys.

Just a thought..

.....get together, stand on line and oogle each others toys.

That's more or less the purpose of the "Club Shoots", Just to get together and have some low stress fun.

If the above mentioned show up and have no problem with it, I'm sure that something could be arranged. Just keep tabs with it in the shooting section. For the most part, The Guy's involved with IDPA,3Gun and the rest, will post what, when, and, where.

Yeah I was just thinking that these guys could be encouraged to pass on the skills to the guys that don't have the time or funding to make it to the $1000 adventures some of these classes in PW are.

Only problem is most all weekends I am out competing in matches or flying airplanes for Uncle Sam. Afterward the match (mainly Pueblo matches) if someone wants some one on one, I am almost always willing to hang out for an hour or two.

Last IDPA match in Pueblo 3 board members and I stayed late and did some drills on movement, target acquisition, and steel.

For the north crowd. Club shoots (second Saturday of the month) are the same day as the IDPA match in Clear Creek. Can't change it to the next Saturday, because it is the 3-gun at Aurora, the following Sat. is a 3 gun at PPPS. The only free Sat. that I know of, if the first one of the month, but that is not the club shoot day.

Good idea.

I am one of those who can't make the weekend shoots. I would be interested in weekday events. Training would be an added bonus.

I agree with Marlin 100% our club shoots are about having fun nothing more. I did enjoy the 3 gun match but some of us just want to hang out and have fun.

I do plan on attendending more 3 gun matches but I would hate to see our club shoots turn into anything other than what they are a good time to hang out with freinds.

Don't mix competition shoots with club shoots it would ruin both!

I've had some one on one time, and have learned some valuable stuff, but what I've learned has been more about me as a shooter individually than what a 'class' will benefit the shooter, I think.

If you'd like to organize and figure out something to get some actual clinics/classes together, I'm always willing to help. I'm no Hoser or any other master shooter, but I know a thing or two and can always lend an arm or a strong back for setup, etc.

I will also add that, while I love shooting matches, and love hanging out with the guys, by the end of the match after having helped set up, shot the match, and helped tear down, I'm pretty burned out and tired and DEFINITELY need to take a shower.

I think that what would be most beneficial would be to have some pseudo-matches where the rules are applied, the stages are set up, but instead of running it like an actual match, have time not be a factor and not scoring it for anything other than shooter's edification, give them some practice time and time to work on skills.

In the heat of battle, so to speak, there're a lot of things one has to keep in mind: time, accuracy, safety, etc. etc. Take some of the stress off and perhaps let/encourage the more experienced shooters to critique and coach the less experienced shooters, and help them progress.

Just my tuppence.

I think this would be a good idea, some realy use it. I have no problem doing a class.

Ya know, my thought wasn't that the entire shoot would be dominated by a lesson, and I'm not advocating turning the shoots into a 3gun match. I'm just saying that having a single lesson and or a side of the line where someone is willing to teach something like basic marksmanship taught at an even like Appleseed would be a cool bonus.

Not much worry from my side, as I've said, the club shoots always end up on kids weekends for me, and Autism and Firearms don't mix..

Don't forget that we will start back up with our monthly 3-gun matches in Lake George in April. After I am done tearing down the match and if I don't have anyplace that I need to get to in a hurry, I would be willing to help out some new shooters with anything that I can.

If we did, I think the class shoud/would be before the shooting...that way we have the ammo to practice and we can choose to work more on said skill during the rest of the shoot if we wished...

Here is my .02 on the class/shoot thing (Hoser are you listening?) if I show up to a shoot, I,m there to SHOOT. If I pay to show up to a class, I want to SHOOT. I have better had to switch to another gun after I broke the first one, and I should be bumming ammo off one of my classmates after I empty the last thirty (out of thirty) round mags. I shot IPSC out at Whistling Pines one night, and it was cool, Hoser put forth some hard work, but to stand around for an hour to shoot for thirty seconds (I know some of you Rock Stars are faster), isn't my style. That's why I don't .50 BMG competitivly, I don't want to give up a whole weekend to shoot ten rounds. A class would be cool, but lets be SHOOTING!!

I have been giving this some thought. I know most of you don’t know me, but if your interested PM me and I’ll tell you my background and what I may, be able to do for you. I only shoot 3 gun once a month so I have the time. No cost to you, other then your targets, ammo, and time.
I don’t think the club shoots should be changed. If we do this kind of shooting , then I think it should be on a different day or a different range. At the south shoot site (I only shoot at the south shoots) we often have others not with us shooting down the ridge without problems. Then we can still get together for cheese wurst. We could even set up a range like the Scrambler,at Gunsite, for people to run through and then go back to the normal static range.
For the south shoots, I’m willing to setup and run this kind of thing. I live close, so it’s nothing for me to show up early for set up.

I with Ryan. [Beer]

BUT, that said, If Tora has no problem with doing it at the south site, and a few of You want to, I have no problem with it. [Tooth]

I don't see Myself doing it for awhile, I'd make a cut, the foot would give out, I'd fall down, You Guys would laugh, I'd get embarrassed, Then I'd have let loose the Yellow Dog Of Death. (tm) Then I'd have to spend hours cleaning His teeth, when I could've been shooting.

I'm totally down for some training at the South site. I may be able to help by making some steel targets if someone wants to give me some specs.

What kind of targets can you make? I'll get PM you some specs (monday) for one I've been wanting to get made. As for the shoots I like cardbord targets, they let you see your shoot placment better.

Classes are a lot of work. Just ask Jeff. You spend weeks setting the things up, and hope everyone shows up. I'm not against them, but most trainers aren't cheap, and they require the host to provide certain things. Like a range, targets, and other administrative costs/necesseties. And usually they want a guaranteed student load - profit.

I have tried in the past to host an armorers class or two. We had some national trainers lined up to do them. But in the end we lost out for lack of a facility to host such a thing.

Same with NRA Classes. If we had a classroom and a range we could do a lot of stuff....
