View Full Version : Be aware of your target AND STOP SHOOTING AT ME!

I went out to the shooting area near Woodland park yesterday packing my shotgun with some number 6 birdshot. I was walking around some brushy areas to try to scare up some rabbits for dinner. As I crested a small hill near some boulders, BULLETS STARTED WHIZZING BY ME! I dove behind a large granite boulder for some cover, while the dumbass reloaded and kept shooting in my direction, even hitting trees just a few feet away from me! I estimate that the shots were coming from around 80 yards give or take, and I yelled out to him that "I'm over here" and he KEPT SHOOTING! I'd estimate that the guy probably fired 20 or 30 rounds in my direction with some kind of semi-auto, shooting as fast as he could. I never did see the guy shooting, so "returning fire", as some have suggested, was not an option. Besides, what was I going to do with birdshot at 80 yards anyway. After there was a lull for a moment, I took off down the hill and got out of there. I was so pissed off I just left the woods.

Moral of the story is BE AWARE OF YOUR TARGET AND BACKSTOP!

And though I was just wearing jeans and a blue tee shirt, I guess that's not good enough and I will be getting some of that stupid blaze orange.

The South Site has some areas where the lines of fire overlap. Some nimrods there have no concept of that. I usually go further in so nobody is close to me.

Second moral, don't go trekking through the woods behind a known shooting area.

Probably didnt hear you yelling cause he had ear protection in/on[Dunno]

a known shooting area? wow. Must have never been there.

That was my thought. When I'm shooting I double up ear plugs under ear muffs and you can scream all you want but I likely won't hear you.

when I said shooting area, I was referring to a ginormous chunk of land that is probably hundreds of square miles. It was just so people would know where I was talking about. Again, ya must not have been there. It was my fault for getting shot at? I was nowhere near a "range" of any sort. You just go out there and shoot wherever you want and these dipshits had no concept of safety.

I was really looking forward to some suppressive fire.

Haha... There are other forum members here who are apparently much better at that than I am.

Lol... thats all we need is someone to get hit by a bullet up in one of the few places we can shoot. Gun grabbers would love that.

Well that's just the national forest then, and out of the hundred of miles how far did you go from the known shooting areas?

This sounds like a two way street issue unless you were truly deep in the woods away from areas the you knew were used by people for shooting. And since you labeled the area as a shooting area you knew what people were using it for. Additionally you used the plural 'dipshits' you must know about what people there are like, but you still risked going into the woods behind it.

And its just a bunch of woods where people go shooting, with more woods behind it. People use it for the natural 'berms' that occur due to the topography. Would you go venture behind/around/above the berms at a commercial shooting range and complain if someone shoot in your direction there.

The other person may not have been right, but that doesn't preclude you from using common sense.

This happened to me once before too. I rectified it by just shooting once into the ground. The trick is to make sure he HEARS you and knows you're out there. Yelling won't cut it.

I would have doubled back and given that asshole the chewing out of his life.

Jesus fuck, I thank goodness every time I see one of these threads I am a member of a private range. I'll pay a couple hundred bucks a year to shoot without fear of that happening.

OK so I should just avoid the entire national forest because somebody might be shooting in it. I was parked in a remote place, many miles into the forest. I was walking in a little traveled area., nowhere near a "known shooting area". And I know this might sound crazy, but you actually have to walk in the woods to get away from the road. I couldn't have done anything differently. Just stop it.

I'd put up a thousand bucks toward a new range near me, if I can have a life-time membership free of charge once it's opened. Hell, if i can have a 10 year membership, I'd do it.

There is a very good reason big game hunters are required to wear orange during firearm seasons. Just sayin'......

So to be clear then, when you initially said that you were near a known shooting area so that 'people would know where you were', what you really meant was that you were in a random chunk of the nation forest near woodland park? Why didn't you say that then?

It's also possible that you were a long ways away from the shooter, and possibly a long ways behind his target. Sounds like you were pretty far back in there, you may have just been where the bullets were impacting. He probably had no clue you were back there. I've been shooting there and seen dirt bikes or atv's just come out of nowhere.

Or, he could have been some redneck dick that was fucking with you, who knows.

Glad you are okay.

If he did not hear you shouting, firing a single round of the birdshot in a safe direction might have alerted him that there was another person in the area . . . unless he was aiming at you deliberately and just didn't care.

As for what can you do with birdshot at 80 yards, worst case scenario you take out your pocketknife and ring the casing at the wad for an improvised slug. "Ringed slugs" are an old hillbilly trick, but only intended for close range. It would probably keyhole and spill the shot before flying 80 yards.

I thought about shooting into the ground, but I decided that if the dude really was deliberately shooting at me, I would want that extra round at my disposal. I knew that the shooter was close because I could hear the shots AND I could hear him working his action to reload. I thought about the cut shells afterward, but the thought didn't occur to me while it was still going on.

I have to assume that he wasn't shooting at you, or you wouldn't be on here today. I think you'd either be in the hospital or dead, or telling a completely different story about how you got in a to a shootout with some yahoo, and won. If it happens again, to you or anyone, I suggest just shooting once in to the ground. If they shoot again, shoot a 3 shot burst in to the ground. If they shoot again, shoot the bastard...

I doubt that it was malicious, it was probably just one hell of an idiot at the wrong place and wrong time. I completely agree with you.

Yikes! Josh, glad you're okay... I've heard some horror stories from Harris Park before, but this is much worse. Further proves, people can be so dumb sometimes... Always be sure of your target and what is beyond!

How freaking hard is it for people to remember to "be sure of your target and what is beyond it"? I cover this in every course I teach.

You're right. Substitute shooting area in my original post with National Forest near Woodland and I guess it would have made more sense. I just refer to it as a shooting spot because it's where I go to go shooting.
